Whether You’re listening to the River, walking the woodland trails, caring for the livestock and animals, helping with gardening, firewood, and fencing or walking woodland trails, or looking up at the starry night sky, there is lots to keep busy and still enjoy your experience.
We bought our property here in Bear River, Nova Scotia in August, 2020. Since then we’ve built our farming homestead to include Goats, Pigs, Chickens, Rabbits, Ducks, Dogs, Cats, and more! We employ rotational pastures and regenerative farming practices.
We work hard, and we play hard, and we’ve been compared to Pilgrims and Pioneers! We upcycle, repurpose, and often find the cheapest ways of doing things, even when it means we may sometimes work harder to accomplish our goals. You, the Work Awayer, will be helping with these things and a myriad of our things including but not limited to helping us with our chores, feeding watering and caring for animals and birds, and perhaps helping in and living as part of our family unit.
This is not a paid position, we are not registered, nor operating, as a business. Any sales we may have are allocated to helping feed and care for our animals, home, and other related activities.
We’ve travelled much of Canada, the USA, Germany and parts of Europe, three areas of Mexico, St. Martin in the Caribbean, and Costa Rica. We primarily speak English and French, but enjoy other languages and also speak some Spanish and German. We enjoy culture and hope to meet people of many areas and cultures. Inviting You into our home and Farm to share and partake as a visitor and volunteer. Unfortunately our farm sales, if any, do not allow us to be considered a Business and pay wages at this point. That said, We do not discriminate on basis of language, race, sex, or sexual orientation, @nd look forward to welcoming You into our home and farm, as we work toward self sustainability.Tipos de ayuda y oportunidades de aprendizaje

Not only can you learn from and about birds and animals, regenerative farming practices, upcycling and repurposing, while doing daily chores and working other projects, You’ll also become part of our team and You’ll be treated like family. Culturally speaking Bear River was settled by Sea Captains, infiltrated by Hypies (many of whom remain and have raised their children and grandchildren here! Today Bear River, perhaps has one of the highest per capita population of local Artisans. Painters, Woodworkers, Potters, Craftspeople of many genres. Even an award winning local Coffee Roaster. Lots of opportunities for Cultural exchange.

Having animals and livestock and employing rotational pastures and regenerative farming, and working to be as natural and organic as possible, often means 2 to 4 hours of chores a day plus other projects.

Briden Farm, that’s what we call our homestead, is named after us, Brian and Denis. We are remotely located, in a very private setting with mixed woodlands, on a hillside, boarded on the eastern side with the West Branch of Bear River. We also have a Brook, Franklin Brook, running through the back of the property. At this point we are not considered a Business, we are simply looking to become more Self Sufficient and invite you to join us as a Volunteer and Visitor.
