Descripción
We raise cattle and grow hay. Our farm is in the Robson Valley, 4 km from the small town of McBride in B. C. pop 600. It is a farming valley between the Rocky Mountains and the Cariboo Mountains. The scenery is beautiful. We are 200 km from Jasper and 50 km from Mt. Robson. We have a few horses, one which needs more training., a donkey trained to pull a buggy. We are training a horse to pull in harness as well. We have two big friendly dogs. There is lots of Alpine hiking, mountain bike trails and trail riding near by. Our daughter and son and their families live very close by.

They would learn the values of a family farm lifestyle with lots of oppurtunity for adventure. Meeting other work awayers in the area that have come from anywhere in the world. They will enjoy living close to nature and wildlife away from the busy city life. The Rocky Mountain scenery is second to none.

Ayuda
Volunteering hours could be fairly flexible averageing no more than 4 hours a day. Days off when required. When we are busy with hay, longer hours would be an option with agreed upon wages. Work would include exercising saddle horses, fence building and maintenance, getting winter fire wood, some helping in the garden and greenhouse, some working in the workshop if you are so inclined. Haying starts about July 1st. Help then would be mostly tractor driving if you are comfortable with that.

Accomodation would be in a cabin, 4 m x 8 m. in the trees , by the creek, a ten minute walk from our house and yard. You can use an ATV if you like. No power, but cabin has 12 volt lighting, out house, very quiet and private. We provide good food, you do your own shopping. You make your own meals but we are happy to share some meals as well.

No smoking , . Our lifestyle is pretty relaxed and there is no need for recreational drugs so they are not welcome. There is lots of oppurtunity for adventure and fun. There will be other workawayers in the area. We have a "back country riding club" that do mountain trail rides and improve trails. We have bikes, canoe, atv. Road access to Alpine on both sides of the valley. We have a very good paragliding launch site in the Alpine with very good access.

I spent three weeks with Doug and Linda at their magnificent farm in the Robson Valley; nestled in between the Rockies and the Cariboo mountains, it really is quite an unbelievably beautiful location. Just waking up every day gives you pause for appreciating the wonders of the natural world. There can't be many, if any, more beautiful places in… read more the world to farm and call home.
Then there's Doug and Linda, two of the warmest, kindest, most hospitable people I've met. I arrived to a busy home in the aftermath of their son's wedding and immediately felt relaxed and welcomed by them and their children and their children's young families, some of whom live nearby. They were always ready to share their home, stories of their past and Linda's outstanding cooking and baking (I miss it already).
I slept in a beautiful cabin in the woods, a short way away from the farmhouse. It was cosy, unique, and plenty warm in September. If it ever gets a little chilly, light the wood-burning stove, it warms up a treat. It's not isolated by any means, but feels it in a good way, stepping out of the cabin in the morning surrounded only by trees (and maybe some cows or wildlife :-)) and don't worry, you won't be lonely, you'll very likely be joined by Amos and Annie, the two beautiful farm dogs.
My work involved mostly operating haying equipment - mowing, raking, baling, hauling - driving tractors and a great old '76 truck. I enjoyed it and am so grateful to Doug and Jesse (their oldest son) for their trust and patience with me. I learnt so much. If you are mechanically inclined, I'm sure there will be plenty for you to do on that front too. Jesse is a highly skilled qualified mechanic, and Doug has plenty of knowledge and experience too, plus a beautiful workshop.
Outside of work, I was able to ride Chief the horse a couple of times, which was so great for me as someone who wants to learn to ride. Doug also helped me make a wooden spinning top just for fun. They also put me in touch with numerous local people for other activities, including some work butchering with the local butcher which was awesome. And they were kind enough to let me take two days to hike the stunning Berg Lake Trail.
Such a great experience I will remember so fondly, thank you Doug and Linda and I look forward to when I can visit you again, hopefully as a Canadian resident!

Doug and Linda are very very warm and nice people, one of warmest I've met in my entire life. Immediately after my arrival I felt like a part of a family not only with them, but also with all of the kids and grandkids, some of them living nearby. I got invited to few family events - dinner at one of their daughters or birthday party of one of the… read more grandkids. Together we visited few friends of them - all are also very nice and interesting people. Despite winter, they managed to take me to Ancient Forest, impressing place with old, majestic trees.

Accommodation is very cozy cabin with good wood stove and LED lights. Water is provided by jugs. There was lot of firewood, so keeping cabin warm was easy. Doug and Linda provide you with everything you need (and even more). Cabin is 10 minuts walk from the farm house, so you have a lot of privacy. If you are at the farm and need quickly put some wood into the stove or take something heavy to the cabin, Doug will let you use his good old three-wheel ATV.
At the farm are two great dogs - Amos and Annie and I miss them already. They like to be at the cabin during the night (especially Amos), so make them happy and take them sometimes with you after dinner. They are good dogs and they don't disturb during the night.

Food is chapter itself - Linda is wonderful and creative cook and each food was just delicious and always with great dessert. Awesome dinners were not only about (awesome) food, but also about a good company, talk and laugh. Often dinner is shared with other kids and grandkids.

The work depends on what time of the year currently is and also what skills you have. At the farm there is always jobs and projects to do, but you are not forced to do anything you don't feel like it. There is always need for something to fix, paint, maintain. I participated on prunning apple trees, installation of new LED lights into the cabin, new doghouse for Annie, chopping wood for woodstove, ground screws for new outside light and chimney, etc. Doug will let you use his great workshop with lot of tools and his wood-working shop as well. You can start your own wood-working project if you want. Both Doug and linda will share advices and skills, and they can explain a lot and patiently answer all questions.

I've put my time spent at Doug and Linda's farm into a jar and I'll open it and take a tiny bit everytime I'd feel miserable. In another words - that month was for me unforgettable and whole experience life changing. Thank you Doug and Linda for wonderful month, one of the best in my life and I hope I will see you again.
