Aurora spent ten quick days with us in September and we wish it could have been longer! We enjoyed her visit so much and she was a tremendous help!
Sometimes you find a person that just "gets it" and that is what we felt with Aurora. The main thing she helped us with was a huge job of prepping and cooking food for a large wedding of our daughter.
… read more She was logical, thorough, and efficient with her time. I only needed to explain something once and she got it. I could trust her with anything on my mind, and she was able to carry out the vision with efficiency and joy. Some days I had to say, "we stop now," or she would have continued for hours more! She is a really hard worker and I would take her back here in an instant.
We also enjoyed Aurora's thoughtful and quiet nature. She has a good sense of humor and is a lively conversationalist. We had many good talks with her about life, the world, and her goals. Her English is excellent and she also is a great cook! Please come back anytime, Aurora!

Leaving their home was a real heartbreaker because it's so easy to become attached to this wonderful community but I know it was only a goodbye and not a farewell.
Until next time I'll miss the delicious food Rachel concocted for us everyday and I'll miss Joe's (somewhat dubious) French imitations!

… read more directions well and treated our property respectfully. Some of the things he helped us with were: painting deck bench, stringing lights, pulling invasive weeds, chipping the flower beds, trimming blackberries and ferns. He also did a lot of sorting, cleaning and organizing.
We taught him to drive our all terrain vehicle for transporting things around. He learned quickly and gained confidence.
He was kind and considerate to every person he encountered here, young and old. He has been brought up well, and integrated easily into our home and community. Florian's presence is missed here, and we look forward to having him return in the future!

He took initiative on some projects that he felt comfortable with and it was a nice surprise to have some details on our vehicles taken care of. We enjoyed learning about Egyptian culture and some of the different places he has traveled. His English is quite good but with a strong accent. He happily repeats words and phrases if at first we don't understand! Mimo housesat for a weekend when we went out of town, and he did a wonderful job keeping the animals fed and the house cleaned up. He is trustworthy and honest. It was really fun to host Eric and Katrien for two and a half weeks in July '23. It felt as if our own adult kids had come home for a visit! The day they arrived we enjoyed taking them to visit friends and experience a true American fourth! The days went quickly with these two.

… read more and everything. He assisted us with numerous odd jobs around the property, always with a smile. Katrien also, has such a kind heart for people and animal friends. She helped me especially with her great organizational talents and got a system down for identification of my sweet pea seeds. She meticulously took inventory of all the plants, took photos and labeled them. It was a huge gift! We also worked steadily on chipping, digging, and planting. We appreciated their flexibility in having to change rooms a few times because of other things going on. They are definitely a joy to have around and they keep a positive attitude in all they do. We also loved getting to know more about Belgium and their travels around the world, their various jobs and languages. These two are kind, have no drama, are flexible, and a real treat to host.

I arrived at Joe and Rachel's place in Belfair without any clear expectations — they were my first workaway experience, as the first stop of my one-year sabbatical. And I was blown away: I knew it the second Rachel came to pick me up from the airport and was nothing but joyful despite my flight being delayed for hours and her having to wait.

The work did not feel like work because everything they do is made with so much care and love — Rachel has a love for her garden and her home that will probably be an example for me for my whole life.
Joe and Rachel are pillars of their community, adored by all, and people came and went all day long in cheerfulness and kindness. I had countless beautiful exchanges with everyone that came through the door and I will keep a longing memory for those days of constant joyful business and kind agitation.
I could never have dreamed a better start to my year. We had discussions regarding life and my year off that will orient me as I keep going forward, as Joe and Rachel were both eager to provide enlightened counsel and information.

She came to our farmy, small-town life from Paris and corporate work, but it did not take her long to fall into the slower pace - well, our different sort of busy. … read more experiences. We took it upon ourselves to add challenging opportunities, and she did not fall short of her "yes" goal - or any of ours. She brought energy and joy to our tasks, and interesting conversation to our table. She has a keen sense of task management and helped prioritize our daily projects into effectual chunks each day. We worked together on yard preparations for an outdoor wedding, with chores including weeding, mowing, chipping, barking and decorating. It was not hard work but sometimes tedious, and she proved to be a steady, capable, cheerful, thoughtful and thorough helper.
On one of my favorite evenings we ordered take-out sushi together, sat on the couch watching a rom-com and talked about everything under the sun. Fatima is open, friendly and outgoing, an engaging conversationalist and a trustworthy person. We so much hope to see her again and say "yes" to more adventures together. … read more is never-ending and yes, Shay the robotics expert cheerfully shoveled manure for us! When we decided to take on an even more obnoxious project, a Scotch Broom invasion that had blighted much of ten acres, Shay was all in for hours of hard manual work, often in warm weather. Shay remained steady and good-natured throughout the three weeks. When we finished it, we felt a huge sense of accomplishment from such a daunting project, so well completed!
Shay will always be remembered with gratitude for this.
When you host Shay, you will be enriched by an education in delicious and creative vegetarian options We all enjoyed eating his meals, even the carnivores among us, and learning about alternative ingredients and seasonings. Shay cooked several delicious meals for our family and friends.
We can't recommend Shay enough. He's easy to have around: sincere, considerate, helpful and hard-working. He also comes with a car, which provides him some independent exploration and easy freedom.

… read more probably say it is not! He spent much of his free time studying English at the dining room table or up in his room. We always enjoyed talking with him about his perspectives on many subjects and learning more about Polish history and special foods. There were some days that he had his nights and days turned around and was not sleeping well; however, he always made sure to get up and help us on projects later in the day if he missed the morning shift. He is a good strong worker and gave us excellent help for several days with stacking firewood, clearing a messy blackberry and weed infested stream, chipping branches and helping us with fencing in our chickens.

… read more windowsill. He was steady in a difficult project, clearing a bramble-choked stream that had been on our To Do list for several years! With his enthusiasm and dedication to the task, we were able to make tremendous progress. Some days, we would find him independently working on the stream, making improvements, clearing obnoxious weeds, planting native species into shady crannies - often on his time off. He has extensive knowledge of local flora and native plant varieties. Lots of insight and information!
Philip also brought a true servant heart to our home. One day we found him cleaning the kitchen (spotless) and taking on a butcher block restoration project he noticed as needful. We appreciated his kind and considerate demeanor toward everyone here. On our last evening together, he cooked an amazing curry meal from scratch and set the table as if we were in a 5 star restaurant. Exceptional flavor and presentation! Philip truly is a special person and we hope to share his company again. Thank you, Philip, for brightening our home with your presence. Please do come back!

Now that Saleh is on to new adventures, we very much miss his quiet and caring ways. Saleh worked hard for us on several projects; pulling weeds in the hot sun, chopping, splitting and hauling wood, and taking charge of some of our more unpleasant duck tasks. He is knowledgeable about lots of things and has had lots of world adventures. We enjoyed many evenings talking about life in general, the personalities of camels, and the cultural quirks of Saudi Arabia. We would easily recommend Saleh to anyone who wants a kind, considerate, hard working man who is not intimidated by the thought of cooking for a crowd. As he so often told us: "No problem; you want (name it), no problem; you want (name something bigger) no problem". And he would deliver.

Our responsibilities included gardening, tending the chickens & ducks, some cooking, and a few odds and ends. They are very willing to teach. We also learned about composting and take care of chickens and ducks. Plus enjoyed fresh eggs everyday! They were very affirming and verbally appreciative of the ways our family helped out. It was the 4th of July weekend when we arrived, and they invited us to join a few events/gatherings they were attending--they have lots of hospitable friends! Joe and Rachel put in a good days work everyday on their property, and appreciate people coming alongside them to help with various projects--they are very flexible, but also be ready to roll up your sleeves and enjoy a good days work. Their property is really beautiful--almost like a retreat center--quiet, plenty of places to sit and enjoy the beauty of flowers and nature. This was our first Workaway experience, and super positive! We had a wonderful couple of weeks with Alex. He came to help us out the end of August 2021, and into September, eager to jump into any project we had going. … read more an outdoor building, for instance. He was a steady asset from the beginning through the completion of every job. He also learned how to use a trenching machine while he was with us, and put in several days of hard manual labor digging dirt and laying heavy paving stones for a plaza space we built together. Alex is good-natured and has a fantastic sense of humor. We had many laughs throughout our time with him, and it always lightened and (as important,) never slowed the work. He was really a pleasure to have around, and great fun to get to know. He was interested in improving his English, and was a fine and interesting conversationalist, listening well, and sharing fascinating facts about Mexican history, and culture, with interesting words and phrases to teach us. He made a fantastic Mexican breakfast for us one morning, and taught us salsa dancing! Such great memories.

… read more 2-year-old Adah, all the way up to Joe; everyone had smiles on their faces, There was never a dull moment the entire time I was there, from 8 am until whenever I finally decided to go to sleep. Most days will see double-digit members at the dinner table, all with amazing personalities and stories to tell.
There were ample amounts of projects that would fit what skillset/desire of job that you wanted. I decided to choose a more physical labor-intensive type of project, and they definitely delivered lol! Joe or Rachel would always be mindful of the hours worked, and would often have to tell me to stop for the day (I usually still had a few things to finish up before the day was done though lol).

We mentioned a few patio and water management visions of ours to him, which first involved digging some trenches into hard earth for drainage, then more trenches for irrigation, then, again, more trenches to find old water pipes, and then removing considerable earth to bring the patio to the correct level and slope. He not only dug, and dug and dug (often in 80 to 90 degree heat), he did it, more often than not, with a smile on his face. He also helped us pour concrete, and lifted heavy Turfstone patio tiles into perfect place, and weed whacked many trails. No task was too large, too small, or too tedious. Nate stayed with us six weeks this summer, and during that time took a sincere interest in every member of our family from the youngest to the oldest, and our extended community. He is attentive, and respectful, and kind. Nate will be much missed here, and we hope to see him again on a future tour. We highly recommend Nate for anyone in need of a good, strong young man with a great attitude. Thanks so much Nate, for joining our crazy life this memorable summer. My Journey in beautiful Washington started in 17th of May. After Joe and his lovely wife Rachel took me from the airport 🛬to Belfair. I impressed how is the aria pretty 😍 and full of EverGreen trees🌲. I havent seen nature like this before! So, all the way to their home I was thinking how god is great to creat place like that!😃

… read more their, the hole family treated me as a part of the family👨👩👧👦. They are a huge family so it was hard in the first days to remember all their names, but now I feel that each one on this family became a unique✨ memory that I won’t forget forever. 🤍
It seems that it was workaway and volunteering program, but I have a FunAway program 😃.. I stayed for just two weeks, which I tried a lot of fun farm work. They were focused on how I can benefits from the work, so they tried to make me familiar with new machines that I haven’t used it before to get as much experience that I could have on these few days. So I was working with them on:
Finding raccoons 🦝
Cutting extra weed 🌱🌱
Some work in the green house 🪴
Cooking some times🥘 🧑🍳
Collecting flowers 🌸 and vegetables 🍅
Painting basketball field 🏀
And I cannot forget the Mower, the most fun work😆
also, I used the weed racker, chainsaw ... etc ... “I hope the spelling of the machines is right 😇”.
I joined them with 3 meals everyday, breakfast was special: because: 1️⃣the delicious food from Rachel and Joe😋, 2️⃣ the daily morning talk about God. Which makes me learn a new thing every day about their religion. It was a awesome way to learn about new culture. And practicing English which they helped me so much with both. They respected my culture, customs and traditions.
We have fun even in working days or the weekends. I went to several places in Washington with them, Seattle, camping 🏕, kayaking 🚣🏻, swimming 🏊♂️, and all beautiful places 😍.
Not just me who had fun on this 2 weeks, also my followers on Instagram impressed about how volunteering here is full of joy and happiness😃. There is a lot of people now decided to try volunteering in WorkAway after they saw my amazing journey.
Joe is full of joy 🤩 and Rachel is a perfect mom.
