Hi! I'm Rachael!
I'm an avid traveler who is looking for my next adventure! An unusual American, I have lived abroad in 5 countries: England, Ireland, South Korea, Australia and currently, New Zealand! I love immersing myself in new cultures and getting to know people.
I have a BA in both History and Theater and Performance Studies. I get excited about history, musical theater, travel, food (I'm not picky!), and much more.
I love talking and I am always up for learning new things and conversing with others. Meeting new people is an exciting way to learn about the world and gain invaluable information about life and culture!
I am excited about Workaway because I want to learn new skills! There are so many unique experiences I couldn't find anywhere else. I am a hard working person who loves a challenge! I am open-minded and I take my responsibilities seriously. My goal is to go outside my comfort zone and discover more about myself.

Quais são suas habilidades?
I am really open to new things and have had experience in a variety of places and jobs.

Currently I work in hospo in Auckland, NZ! I spend about half my time working FOH at a cafe and the other half helping with their payroll.

Just before moving to NZ, I worked in Seattle in the USA supporting students living on campus at a major university, was a Starbucks barista and barista trainer, as well as a Guest Associate at a museum!

Before Covid I spent a few years living and working abroad in various countries. In 2019 I moved to Sydney, Australia where I worked in retail for 6 months. Once Covid hit, I gained my first workaway experience looking after a 7 year old and performing various household chores (cooking dinners, pulling weeds, trimming hedges, organizing closets, etc.) After, I joined another host at her horse-riding school. I helped look after 7 horses - cleaning out stalls and paddocks, completing 2x a day feedings, and assisting with other various tasks around the house/farm.

I also worked as an English teacher at an elementary school in South Korea for 2 years and before that I worked at an English summer camp in Ireland. My first experience living abroad was my year studying abroad at a university in London, England.

Overall, I think my strengths are organizing, interacting with new people, creating fun activities for kids, and learning new things. However, I want to push myself to gain more skills and try something new!

I stayed with Anne-Katrin for six weeks in July of 2020. I had a wonderful time working at her home and helping her with her beautiful horses!

I definitely had to work hard while staying in Arcadia, but the work was fair. I had never worked with horses before, therefore it took me a little time to learn and become more efficient in my work.… read more Anne-Katrin was very patient with me and taught me everything I needed to know! I cleaned up around the house, mowed the lawn, worked in the garden, etc. When it came to the horses, I cleaned out the stalls/paddocks, polished the saddles, fed them, led them to and from the paddocks, and was even able to brush and tack/untack a few of them towards the end of my stay. The horses are very friendly and easy to be around, but definitely require care and attention.

This workaway gives people the opportunity to spend time outdoors and have an awesome experience in a beautiful part of Australia. Anyone who volunteers here can work with animals and learn a lot from an awesome host! Anne-Katrin has a ton of experience with horses and is a wonderful person. She was so friendly to me and welcomed me into her home. We enjoyed chatting together throughout the day and we often enjoyed dinner and movies together after a long day of hard work. But we also had our own separate time when we were too exhausted to socialize!

In my downtime I was also able to play with Merlin, Anne-Katrin's wonderful dog. He is super energetic and friendly, and loves people. As for food and travel, there is a bus that goes to the grocery store not too far away, although it only came a couple times a day while I was there. If timed right, the bus was manageable though, or I would take an Uber one way or the other. Sometimes I grabbed a ride with Anne-Katrin if she was heading into town. On a day off, volunteers could even go to Sydney if they wanted (by bus and train)!

Overall, I loved my experience and gained so much valuable knowledge. It was such a unique experience that is so meaningful to me. I learned new skills, challenged myself, and was able to learn more about German and Australian culture. I was especially grateful to have such an amazing time when Covid was still relatively new and traveling was difficult. I am still inspired by Anne-Katrin's work ethic and passion for life, horses, and her career. I made a wonderful friend out of my experience and hope to visit her, Merlin, and the horses one day in the future!
