Oi! My name is Maseo Padilla, and I am beyond excited to take the leap towards this next chapter of my life and experience Portugal :)

My Story:
I grew up with four brothers (including my twin), being in an extremely small private school for 11 years, until one of my older brothers insisted my twin brother and I move to public school, which ultimately is one of the best decisions I ever made. That is when I began my pattern of stepping outside of my comfort zone.

After a year of public school, our older brother once again recommended us to do something bigger, and that is when my twin brother and I applied to be foreign exchange students. We were instantly accepted, and I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to spend 9 months with four different host families in the city of Curitiba, in southern Brazil, where I had some of the most influential and unforgettable experiences of my life.

Unfortunately, in March of 2020, my time in Brazil was cut short due to some weird virus called “Covid-19”, and after 2 month of quarantine with two separate host families I eventually came home. And as hard as it was to accept my exchange was over due to Covid, those two months in quarantine taught me so much about myself, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. (It also definitely bettered my Portuguese, having no choice but to speak it 24/7 lol)

That was almost 4 years ago, and since then I’ve traveled a couple of countries to shortly visit, like Finland, Sweden, and Mexico, but I still haven’t officially moved to live out of the country since I did my exchange in Brazil.

I’ve spent the past two years living at my home base in Oregon, planning on doing work exchange in Portugal, but time after time, there’s been events that I allowed to prevent me from traveling there. Unforgettable memories and friends have been made, as well as incredible challenges and the lessons that came with, and although I’m extremely grateful that I’ve stayed and learned more about who Maseo is on a deeper level, I now know more than ever that it is time for me to take a leap of faith and pursue my dreams of traveling to Europe! I deserve it, and I’m ready to live life on a new level and experience the gift of travel again. I can only grow so much here and I’m extremely stoked to surround myself with like-minded travelers and dreamers again :)

Why Portugal?
My older brother is once again to blame. He recommended it to me a few years ago, describing it as a country I would fall in love with, and he hasn't been wrong yet! I have always wanted to learn to surf, as I am in love with the beach and surf culture. I've also heard nothing but good things about Portugal from local travelers. I believe this is a perfect country for me to take my first step back into the groove of traveling before exploring more of Europe. Speaking Brazilian Portuguese will allow me to learn European Portuguese more easily than another language, providing a deeper cultural exchange and an involved experience. Maybe my "Port Wine Stain" birthmark could be a sign that it's meant to be...

Now a little more about who I am…

I am a creative, loving, unique, kind, unserious, respectful, loyal, colorful, adventurous, insightful, unapologetically weird, hardworking, mindfully ditzy, talented, friendly old soul with a very big heart! I value experiencing as much that I can in my lifetime as well as mindfully documenting it, investing in valuable relationships, making connections with people and sharing the life experience, using my body and caring for it, and making a positive impact by sharing my message and love to the world with the unique abilities and traits that I’ve been gifted.

I absolutely love to create, whether that’s doing photography, cinematography, music, art, or clothes. I’m always exploring new outlets to create as well.
I shoot film photography and I often record videos through my vintage Sony Handycam. I love exploring retro formats.
I love to move my body through exercise, sports, dancing and exploring. I plan to advance my dancing skills by exploring all kinds of dance in the world!
I love learning new languages and stretching my brain to fit them.
I love to improve and challenge my body, mind and spirit. I’m always learning and am always looking for lessons to learn.
I really enjoy reading books: fiction, non-fiction, self improvement, fantasy and more.
I really enjoy experiencing nature in ways such as going to the river and the mountains, the beach, going on hikes, camping, and biking.
I love live music, as well as social events that accompany them.

In high school I participated in a few sports including Track and Field, Cross Country, and Wrestling.

My work experiences include:
•1 Year internship at a film and media production company, shooting commercials, editing footage and creating royalty free music.
•Grown my TikTok account to almost 70k followers
•Over 3 years of experience at my family’s Cuban restaurant, doing all kinds of tasks such as waiting tables, prepping food, washing dishes, cleaning the restaurant, and ensuring the customers enjoy their experience ( make sure to visit if you’re in Oregon! We have the world’s best mojitos ;) )
•Over a year of experience as a barista in a drive through coffee stand chain called Dutch Bros
•5 months experience at a garage door installation and repair company
•House sitting / caring for pets countless times for family, friends and strangers. Providing love and care for the pets and the home, and caring for animals with dietary or medicinal needs.
•Lots of years of experience doing yard work and labor for family, friends, and strangers.

My Plan…

A big part of who I am is what I currently believe my purpose(s) is(are). I believe that one of my purposes that I discovered is to share my story and experience with others to evoke empathy and to spread awareness, positivity and love around the world. I post videos on TikTok about my "Port Wine Stain Birthmark" (Mmmm... Port wine...) to spread awareness and promote body positivity, and I’ve gained a decent following doing so. I love my birthmark and it’s a huge part of who I am! I’ve also posted some videos sharing my experience growing up with ADHD. I’m currently working on developing my social media presence to be able to support different niches of content that I create to make which include: ADHD, Travel, Body Positivity, LGBTQ+ topics, and more! Although I do hope for that to become one of my main future careers, I’m currently looking into also doing concert and event photography / cinematography as that would allow me to travel and work more freely.

I am also in the early stages of my creating my own chatbot programming business.

You may have guessed it, but I am pushing towards working remotely and becoming a digital nomad through these ventures.

I’m focusing on one step at a time, getting to Portugal and working on my businesses, but after an indefinite amount of time I plan on applying for a Portugal freelancer visa, exploring more of Europe, deciding which country I would like to study in, and then settle down for school. My plan for life hasn’t always proven to come true, though, so we’ll see!

If I were to describe my perfect host, I would paint them a bit like this:

My ideal Workaway experience would allow me free time to explore the area around me as well as work on my businesses, physical health, and my hobbies, but with that I am willing to work hard. I will not disappoint!

Having a nearby gym or an at home gym would be so great, but that is not a dealbreaker.

I would love to learn the language of any country I visit. I hope to become a polyglot as quickly as possible! I would also be willing to teach English in moderation to those who are willing to learn. I think it would be fun to teach a language in trade for learning a language! I've even considered being an English teacher.
