Hi my name is Maja and I am new to Workaway, but excited to start volunteering here!

I'm from Jersey, a small island in the English Channel between the UK and France, although I moved to Jersey from Poland when I was very young. It's the largest of the five Channel Islands and somewhere I'm very lucky to call home.

I have recently graduated from Hartpury University with a BSc in Applied Animal Science with Therapy, and I am planning a gap year before I start my Master's in Veterinary Physiotherapy in September 2027. Over the past few years I've built up a wide range of experience working with animals through paid jobs, volunteering and my university course. Most of my experience has been with dogs, including dog walking, training, behavioural work, puppy classes and canine physiotherapy, but I've also worked with horses, farm animals and in a veterinary practice.

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life. I have an almost 7 year old border collie called Milo who lives with my parents when I am away at university. Milo and I used to compete in agility, do bikejoring and spend hours running along Jersey's beautiful beaches before he lost his sight. Since then we've adapted together, and now enjoy scent work and fun agility classes.

Outside of working with animals, I'm a very active person. I enjoy cycling, running, the gym and spending time outdoors. I also appreciate quieter moments, my favourite way to unwind is reading a book in the boot of my car in the middle of nowhere with Milo curled up beside me.

I would describe myself as friendly, adaptable and hardworking. I'm always happy to get stuck into whatever needs doing, whether that's caring for animals, helping around the property or learning completely new skills. Before beginning my Master's in September, I'm looking for an opportunity to gain new experiences, meet like-minded people and contribute wherever I can.

Quais são suas habilidades?

I have several years of hands-on experience working with a wide range of animals, particularly dogs, through both paid employment and volunteering. I'm confident handling dogs of all ages, breeds and temperaments, including working breeds, puppies and dogs with behavioural challenges. My experience includes group dog walking, one-to-one training, enrichment, kennel management, housesitting and providing clear communication and feedback to owners.

Alongside this, I have gained practical experience in veterinary and rehabilitation settings. I have assisted veterinary nurses and surgeons in practice, supported post-operative patient care, and volunteered at both canine and equine physiotherapy centres. I have experience in preparing patients for treatment, operating equine treadmills under supervision, handling horses safely and maintaining high standards of animal welfare and hygiene.

Most recently, I have volunteered at a canine hydrotherapy centre, where I assisted with preparing dogs for hydrotherapy sessions, supporting therapists during treatment and ensuring the dogs were comfortable and relaxed throughout their rehabilitation. I have also volunteered at an animal rescue, helping to care for dogs with a wide range of backgrounds and needs. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of rehabilitation, welfare and the importance of adapting handling techniques to each individual animal.

I have also broadened my experience through volunteering on a farm and at a sled dog kennel in Wales. There I cared for a team of huskies, assisting with feeding, kennel cleaning, grooming, enrichment, puppy training and customer experiences. I also helped with sheepdog training, livestock handling, stable management and supporting horse riding lessons. These experiences strengthened my confidence working outdoors, carrying out physically demanding tasks and adapting quickly to new environments.

My ambition is to become a veterinary physiotherapist, and I will be starting a Master's degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy this September. Every opportunity I take on allows me to expand my practical skills and deepen my understanding of animal behaviour, movement and rehabilitation. I particularly enjoy learning from experienced professionals and seeing how different approaches can improve both an animal's welfare and its relationship with people

I enjoy reading books in Polish and English to maintain a high level of proficiency in both. I usually read fiction books with my favourite genres being sci-fi and philosophical novels. I also love to cook, while living away from home at university I have really enjoyed cooking new dishes and making food from scratch. I like to experiment with making food from different cultures but also making traditional home-style Polish dishes.
