Hi!
I’m Karla, 21 years old, from southwest France. I’m an engineering student and apprentice construction site supervisor — a busy but exciting life!

I’m open-minded, curious, independent and eager to discover new cultures and ways of life. I’ve always dreamed of traveling alone to grow personally, and Workaway is the perfect opportunity to combine my passions: working with my hands, connecting with people, and learning languages.

I grew up traveling with my parents across many country (especially the countryside), often in vans or tents, so I feel at home outdoors and love simple living. I'm deeply connected to nature and always looking for what can be learned or photographed around me.

Fun fact: I’m hard of hearing and wear hearing aids, but this doesn’t affect communication at all — especially face to face.

My main goal this summer is to improve my Spanish through full immersion. I haven’t practiced since middle school, so I’m currently reviewing with Duolingo and other tools. I chose Spain on purpose to challenge myself and avoid speaking French or English. I’d really love to be in an environment where Spanish is the main language spoken by hosts and volunteers.
That being said, I still believe staying with anyone in spain would be a great opportunity to practice my Spanish. I’m not looking for perfection or full immersion, just more chances to speak and learn every day. Even simple exchanges with locals, the Spanish interaction in the village, and communicating with others in Spanish or English would already help me improve a lot.

I mainly want to improve my English but I also would like to learn Spanish for a long time now, but unfortunately, I haven't managed it yet. But I am interested in learning any language I get the opportunity to. In return, I could teach French or a bit of English. As French is my native language.

Quais são suas habilidades?

I have a diverse background in farming, construction, childcare, house renovation, and teamwork.

-My parents and grandparents were vegetable farmers, so I grew up surrounded by animals and nature, helping out from a young age. I’ve done tasks like feeding animals, cleaning sheds, weeding, planting, harvesting vegetables, mowing the lawn, collecting firewood, composting…

-I’ve also worked in the fields during summer jobs, doing corn detasseling (also known as “maize pollination control” or “maize topping”) and grape picking, often under extreme heat and long working hours.

-During my studies, I’ve experienced assembly line work in the aircraft industry, assembling metallic parts, which required precision and focus.

-My family did renovate back in 2020 an old barn into a sustainable living house using wood and ecological materials. I've been involved in all stages of the renovation— from demolition to insulation, flooring, and finishing — which has deeepn my interest in the construction field.

-During one of my Workaway experiences, I helped build a wooden terrace around a house. We did everything ourselves — from deciding on the layout and measurements, to digging the holes for the posts, and finally installing the first and last planks. We also repaired part of the house's wooden cladding (siding).

-I’m also comfortable with children, having babysat kids aged 3 to 6 and done animation for teenagers from 14 to 17 years old.

-My mom is an unrivalled cooker so do I (haha joke) yet I can cook homemade meals and desserts.

-I’ve lived in shared spaces for several years — first in a boarding school, now in a co-living apartment with at least 3 roommates — so I’m used to communal living (cleaning, laundry, organizing shared spaces, etc.).

-I'm currently playing rugby and have danced for over 7 years. I also enjoy hiking, skiing, water sports, and discovering new activities.

All these experiences have helped me become practical, adaptable and independent.

I love sharing meals, daily life, and common activities with others — but I’m also very independent and don’t mind working alone.

I enjoy trying new things, especially traditional skills, DIY, or local crafts. I also appreciate calm moments, like reading or watching series. I might be a little shy at first, but I quickly open up once I feel comfortable.

I'm respectful, open-minded, always willing to help, and happy to exchange cultures, especially if it helps improve my Spanish!
