Hi! We’re Amal and Carlos. We met in August 2023 during an international ESC volunteering project in the Amalfi Coast. We found each other doing something we’re both fond of: being and working in nature, with animals, living in tents, in a shared community with amazing open-minded people from all over the world that came together to create the first eco buildings of an educational centre.
We both love travelling and learning about new cultures, languages, lifestyles, we’re especially interested in a way of living closer to nature and far from the city’s rhythms, ideas and stress. We’re also cultivating our passion in photography and reading. Communication and trust are the keys for our long distance relationship and that’s also what we’re looking for in the projects we want to work on together. In summer 2024 we stayed for over 2 months in Pisão, Portugal. It was an amazing experience where we got to work and learn a lot. We’re aware there’s so much more out there to discover about the world and the people in it, ourselves included, and that’s why we’d love to continue this journey on Workaway. This summer we would love to experience life on a farm even if we’re open to different possibilities as long as we get to be in contact with nature again!
And now we’d like to introduce ourselves also as individuals :)
- Ciao! It’s Am. I was born and raised in Rome, Italy in a big multicultural family. I'm an active person and I love being outdoors under the sun whenever possible. In the past years I finally started travelling and now the feeling of getting to know something new that inspires you got addicting and I hope to never stop. But I also enjoy sharing a good cup of coffee with my friends, who I consider my chosen family, or deepen the relationship with the new people I might meet everyday by listening to their stories and dreams. This helped me understand better who I am and what I want. I love hiking, animals, books, cinema, fixing stuff and I try to share my view of the world through my camera. My next goals are to have a personal website where to share my work, but also working in natural and animal protection in order to give my contribution in the amazing world we live in that sadly has not been respected as it should.
- Hola! I'm Carlos, I've always lived in Madrid, Spain. From a young age I spent a lot of time in natural areas, mainly camping in the Pyrenees: that’s how I developed my love for nature. I love spending time outdoors and I'd like to go back to hiking regularly as I used to. I've been very fortunate to visit many countries all around the world and my aim is to keep going on that line in order to pursue my love for travelling, learning about different cultures and trying to get a more global view of it. Throughout my life I've practised many sports, the main one being basketball, which I still play and now I also coach a youth team in my club. I’m an easy going and hard working person, who likes doing practical or physical activities and I will do everything in my hands to complete a task I've been assigned. I recently rediscovered my passion for animals and wildlife so I decided to start over again with the goal of becoming a conservationist, hopefully by taking part in the recovery of endangered species.

Quais são suas habilidades?

In 2025 I graduated in Geographical Sciences at Sapienza Univerisity where I also did a Spanish exam (B1) and attended other courses on sustainable development. I did a traineeship and worked in the Oasi WWF di Macchiagrande where I got to be involved in different activities, such as environmental education, management, protection and maintenance of the natural reserve, reception and photography. I’m really interested in Conservation; I've had different volunteering experiences related to it. In 2022 a working camp in a shared community with WWF Crotone in M.P.A of Caporizzuto where we rescued and released loggerhead sea turtles, monitored turtles' nests and created corridors. In summer 2023 I did the ESC project with ACARBIO about natural building (and it’s where I met Carlos). Currently I'm volunteering in LIPU's wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre and in April I took part in another project through the ESC about soil conservation and land restoration, in Iceland.
I have both a B and A driver’s licence, but I mainly ride my motorbike (a Honda NC700X ♡).
I enjoy practical and physical work, fixing things, taking care of plants and being around animals. What I don’t know how to do I’m eager to learn it. During my lifetime I’ve developed good planning, problem solving and leadership skills.
Carlos
During my studies I've had two life changing experiences abroad: first in Canada, where I spent a term and got to be in contact with nature very often, and then in Greece, as an Erasmus+ exchange student. Now I’m enrolled in “Gestión Forestal y del Medio Natural” where among other things I got to learn how to use a chainsaw and weed whacker. I also have some knowledge of technical architecture because before choosing this course I studied it in university and in a vocational training school.
In summer 2023 I took part in the ESC project with ACARBIO, where we applied nature's and permaculture principles to building, which helped me realize that I wanted to be around nature and help with its conservation. In the same year I started working as a basketball coach and previously I've been a monitor in summer camps and in a skiing trip.
Currently I'm doing a traineeship in KUNA, a wildlife and abandoned farm animals refuge where I get to spend all day around them, taking care of them and learning their needs.
I’m also pursuing my love for languages by preparing for the English C1 exam, taking Italian classes and practising my French when I can (B1).
Moreover, recently I’ve discovered a new passion (thanks to Am) after I got a reflex camera and I’ve been practising it since then.
