Hello! My name is Alexa, I'm 24 yrs old originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. I spent most my childhood growing up in the desert of Arizona, but have lived between New York City and London for the last 6 years. I recently graduated from New York University with a Bachelor's degree in European History and Film Studies. Although I love the city, I miss being close to nature and am looking to reconnect!

I'm familiar with / interested in many trades. Not afraid to get my hands dirty, used to being on my feet and doing physical + domestic labor, extremely open-minded and learn quickly. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, cycling, reading, cooking, dancing, watching movies, practicing new languages, hearing live music, and occasionally roller skating! I love animals, people, plants. I'm clean, organized, easy going — always up for an exchange of stories/interests but also content to keep to myself. I have EU (Irish) passport so no issues with visa / stay duration.

Quais são suas habilidades?
I've worked as a used bookseller for the last few years so I'm comfortable with sorting through lots of dirt/dust, lifting heavy boxes, organizing, etc. I grew up helping my family garden and helping family friends on their horse ranch. Have always lived with dogs and have taken care of cats. Good with kids and have also cared for elderly hard-of-sight.

Barbara and Georg were fantastic hosts, it is an unbeatable spot of true Irish history, land, and culture! Barbara's knowledge of her home, the agriculture, and the history of the area was incredible, and she was always open to sharing stories.

The daily tasks were simple and genuine, each teaching something about having a homestead and living… read more self-sufficiently. We often weeded, sowed seeds, planted new fruit plants, cleaned the chicken coop, made compost, and one time painted a nice old bench for outside. We helped to take care of the chickens, cats, ducks, geese, and dogs. All the animals were easy-going and lovable (I miss Gingin especially everyday!). Occasionally their sweet granddaughters would come over while Barbara's daughter and son-in-law were at work, and I would do my best to entertain while Barbara did her house tasks — though they are quite good at entertaining themselves! We were given a tea and lunch break each day and worked until around 3. Weekends were free to explore the historical areas around Rosnaree and catch buses to surrounding towns (I once took the bus up to Dundalk which I enjoyed, though Barbara insisted that I must be the first person to ever say that). Barbara was very generous with dropping and collecting us from the bus stations as the area was relatively rural and transport does not go directly to their home. On the few occasions when Barbara was at work or busy I hitchhiked to the bus station, the people from Rosnaree and surrounding towns were all incredibly nice.

Myself and another workawayer housesat for them while they were out of town. They left us plenty of food to eat before leaving and gave written instructions for what needed to be done. One of the rooms in the home is rented out, and we took care of one of the guests while Barbara was away. Having new people coming in and out often made for lots of interesting conversations and lovely cultural exchanges.

Georg is an incredible cook, he can come up with something delicious no matter the ingredients he's working with (though it did help that often we ate lettuce from the garden, honey from the bees, jam from the fruits and eggs from the chickens!). We never went hungry and our days were filled with copious amounts of tea and biscuits. I appreciated everything Georg taught us about taking care of a garden and I especially appreciated his sense of humor

Despite the Meath nettles having a mean go at my skin I would happily be out in the garden at any time. I hope to see Barbara and Georg, the girls, and all the animals again in the near future! Thanks a million for everything again

Alexa was here in June 2025 as a Workaway together with Rachele from Italy.
She was great fun to have around the house, easy to chat with, full of positive energy, and always up for a laugh.
