Hi, I’m ShivaRanjani.

I’m originally from Chennai, South India and have been travelling and living independently since 2021. Over the past few years, I’ve spent time in places like Goa, Manali (Himalayas), Coimbatore, Kerala, Nepal and also did a couple of months of solo travel in Thailand. I enjoy slow travel and getting to know places through everyday life rather than just sightseeing.

I worked in corporate for 6+ years as a software engineer till 2022. I eventually chose to step away from that path to explore a lifestyle that’s more aligned with my interests in health, nature and simple living.

I’m someone who enjoys a calm, grounded routine. I don’t drink or smoke, and I naturally prefer a simple, low-consumption lifestyle. At the same time, I’m adaptable and respectful of different ways of living.

I’m interested in Workaway mainly to contribute, learn and experience different kinds of environments. I’m happy to be involved in day-to-day tasks and be a supportive extra pair of hands wherever needed.

I’m also interested in eco-friendly and sustainable living practices, and I enjoy being part of spaces that value that.

In my personal time, I practice things like rewiring mind, journaling and vipasana meditation, and if it’s something people are interested in, I’m happy to share however I also completely respect personal space and boundaries.

More than anything, I value being reliable, easy to communicate with and respectful of the space I’m in.

I’m open to learning new skills and adapting to what’s needed.

From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed very warmly. I was fortunate to have a personal room for all 10 wonderful days.

The food was delicious, nourishing, mostly organic and prepared with so much care. I got to taste plum, peach, and litchi for the first time, as well as the tastiest local spinach. I also enjoyed learning Nepali recipes and … read more cooking together. I implemented a quick wheat dosa recipe for Krishna, which he really enjoyed.

I was also attracted to the idea of being able to offer whatever I love. So I intended to offer meditation and wellness sessions during my stay, and I also supported by sharing guidance on social media strategies and capturing photo and video memories for the family, which felt meaningful.

Hosts Krishna and Laxmi are such kind-hearted people. Their actions genuinely matched their words when they said volunteers become part of the family. I felt included, supported, protected, and cared for throughout my stay.

The farm is rich in nature, with many varieties of plants, trees, flowers, vegetables, and birds. Although it is only about five minutes from the main road, it still felt peaceful and surprisingly cool inside even on hot days. As a light sleeper, I was pleasantly surprised that the road sounds did not disturb me at all.

I especially loved spending quiet time under the mango tree with the mountain views. It became a beautiful place for reflection, personal growth, and simply enjoying the present moment. The nearby river stream was another highlight. I went there with my Canadian co-volunteer and her children, and together we created and captured wonderful memories in that peaceful natural setting. Sharing meals, conversations, and learning about her multicultural lifestyle added another beautiful layer to the experience.

I learned to play UNO Flip for the first time, enjoyed many relaxed conversations, and had fun looking through the volunteer experience journals filled with photos, messages, and stories from volunteers over the past 15 years.

Tomi is such a calm and friendly dog. Since this is real rural village life surrounded by nature, it is normal to occasionally see very few harmless animal beings such as rats, snakes, insects, and other wildlife. For me, it simply felt like being part of a living natural environment.

The accommodation is simple and basic, but I found it cozy and comfortable. I even experienced showering safely under the open sky for the first time.

The Wi-Fi was fast and great. The friendly neighbours often stopped by to connect and chat, and I was told I was the first South Indian from Tamil Nadu to volunteer there.

This is a place for anyone wanting to experience authentic rural Nepali life, meaningful cultural exchange, beautiful nature, simple living, and genuinely kind hosts. Krishna and Laxmi are among the sweetest hosts I have met.

I feel so blessed that host Prem gave me the opportunity to stay at his safe, organic, and peaceful farm for a month. This village space is rich in real nature (it kind of felt like a semi-forest), with clean air, and is quiet 🤍 ideal for reading, meditating, reflecting, healing mentally and physically, and simply observing the … read more surroundings.

During my stay, I contributed where I could. I did self-cooking, pet sitting, and farmhouse sitting for 2 weeks all on my own, enjoying my solitude to the fullest. I conducted a 1:1 clarity consultation on emotional awareness, supported with customised tree house and farmhouse stays ✨business clarity✨ on the target audience, and helped draft around 20 strategic social media post ideas with descriptions for the farm/tree house. I also helped with shooting time lapses, videos, and photos of the farm with real sounds of nature, and assisted in designing a workshop poster in Canva.

On the farm, I helped with daily tasks like capturing digital memories, cooking, feeding the animals, basic cleaning, assisting with handling 6 guests for their post-wedding photoshoot, bathing the 2 lovely dogs once, giving reminders, and even trying to make pickle with little mangoes that had fallen around. I assisted with farming activities such as planting mint, watering, mulching, adding compost, fixing a small water leak, and seed preparation (lady’s finger, papaya, brinjal, tomatoes). I also somehow manifested the summer rain :) and painted a few wooden doors with primer.

The evening breeze while watering the plants and being at the tree house is so wonderful. The mountain views are so amazing.

For the first time, I did many things like cooking with firewood, harvesting delicious guavas, cashews, and cotton, drinking harvested rainwater, sleeping in the bamboo tree house, swimming in the nearby river, and playing yatzy and the keyboard. I also enjoyed the presence of Azhagi the cat, who warmly connected from the first day (apparently that’s very rare) and slept on my lap many times.

Prem had planted many rare plants which will become amazing trees, giving shade in a few years. Prem was very kind, easygoing, and supportive through different situations, and shared useful knowledge, including healthy cooking ideas and his approach to simple and natural living (like water-only skin cleansing *not even using any natural plant-based powders like channa flour* which I tried from April 1, 2026, and found immensely helpful). It’s inspiring how he leads by example on eco-friendly practices, mainly by creating bio-enzyme for dishwashing.

He also showed me around the farm, including a walk with guests to the private waterfall, took me to try delicious Kerala snacks nearby, and allowed me to attend a brilliant art workshop in the tree house.

Overall, I feel fortunate for this wonderful Workaway experience and all that I learned during my stay.
