Hello, my name is Shanne (31) and I am taking a gap year from my work. I am a positive open minded but person who loves nature and animals. Although I now live in the city for work, I grew up on the country side always enjoying being outside helping my father in the garden and playing sports (and still do). Learning new cultures and skills by travelling is my passion and since I want to switch my career, this year I first will be searching for new adventures away from the city life and a bit back to basic. Hopefully your place is a great match for me.

In the Netherlands, I volunteer in a dog shelter in the weekends where I take care of the dogs that are in need of some love and attention. I also love to do some gardening around my house which my father thought me and harvest my own vegetables on a community farm. I regularly do some maintenance work in and outside our house, such as painting, repairing wooden furniture etc. Furthermore, I like to cook and play sports like running, tennis, mountain biking and yoga. Overall, I am a hard working person and don't mind to get my hands dirty.

What I was looking for in my three months with Stein and Siri ended up in being so much more! I came to their husky kennel to take care of and learn about husky’s in a remote beautiful place and escape the busy city life for a while. When I arrived the end of April, surprisingly enough, there was some new snow and we were able to go sledding for… read more one more week! It was really exciting and amazing to go out with the dogs and Stein and to experience what this kennel and lifestyle is all about. They took the effort to show it all and are so patient with every new workawayer. Seeing an experienced musher working with his dogs, snow everywhere, mountains and crossing a frozen lake is what my first week looked like and was one of my most special moments :) In the evening you are physically tired and fall asleep so naturally which is really amazing to experience after coming from an office job ;-) The weeks after that, spring started and I got to see a different side of their lifestyle. This might not be the (peak) season for mushing and for visiting the kennel, but I feel so fortunate that I also experienced this period with Stein and Siri. Since racing season is over, you really get the chance to meet Stein and Siri and the dogs and every day is a new adventure full of outdoor activities! Next to taking care of and training the husky’s on the ATV, we learned to chop wood, do some farming, repaired an old house and visited some places to get food and stuff for the dogs. And if you like cooking/baking, you will enjoy to experiment with everything you find in the nature and the kitchen is yours! During these activities you can listen to the amazing stories Stein tells and Siri will always check in on you and make sure that you have enough freshly baked bread. Together, they have much love to give, next to the unconditional love you will receive from all the husky’s. Waking up seeing 40 happy friends is amazing everytime and makes your day. You can cuddle them and take them in the cabin as much as you want and really get the time to connect with each of them during feeding, cleaning, training or in your free time of course. Now I am home, I really miss them and the beautiful sound of the howling. Also the nature starts to grow green again and of course there is enough time to go for a hike or bike in the stunning area. I also got the chance to meet some lovely friends, family and neighbours and the kennel can turn into a “summer camp” how Stein once called it. Lots of people want to visit, which I completely understand, and Stein and Siri are always welcoming everyone. As you can read, three months flew by and I enjoyed every single day (even when it rained a bit more then it usually does this season)! Of course there is quite a bit of hard “work” (since keeping 40 dogs in a place like this requires that), but it is part of the lifestyle and very rewarding since there is so much love in return. The slogan “it’s not work, but a lifestyle” really fits the picture. This lifestyle of Stein, Siri and their dogs is what I call pure and can be added to most special moments of my life. If you would like to experience some Norwegian mushing lifestyle like this with some beautiful people, in a stunning remote area, I can really recommend this and I might see you on my next visit ;-) Thanks again for everything Stein and Siri and many hugs for all 4 legged friends!
