Hello,
We are a couple from Scotland - Saoirse (32f) and Sam (34m), currently on a long distance cycle tour. We have the good fortune that we have both been granted two year sabbaticals from our jobs. We hope to cycle across Europe and Asia, and to keep going if we still have time. We love to take our time exploring, and our route is very circuitous! We don't plan ahead too much so we can take opportunities and local tips.
We have previously had one workaway experience in 2018, while we were on a different long distance tour. We loved to opportunity to stop and spend more time in one place, and to work hard and try to pay back some of the generosity which we recieve daily on the road. We love to meet new people from all different cultures and backgrounds, and if given the time and opportunity, try to fit into their way of life.
We are very self-sufficient, hard working and resourceful. We are travelling with everything we need to live on our bikes and wild camp most of the time (though currently less so in the winter). We are friendly and keen and try to make the most of every opportunity we are given. We love nature and are trying to make our way gently through the world. When in Edinburgh we shared our home with many different friends and travellers - we really enjoyed communal living.
We are taking our time travelling through Eastern Europe over the next few months, and in the new year we hope to make our way eastwards through Asia.
Our jobs in the UK were:
Saoirse - I managed two state run forest kindergarten sites, leading a team of total 16 adults caring for 30 children per day (60 total across the week). We were based in a forest on the edge of Edinburgh and cared for children ages 3 - 5 from 08.30 to 16.00, all year and all seasons! I have many years of experience working with children of all ages, needs and abilities. I love being with children and also really enjoy leading a team, ensuring the welfare of all of us while we spent all day in the woods. I am a fully qualified childcare practitioner and Forest School Leader. My previous job was as a childcare advisor for the local authority; if a nursery was unsure how to fully care for a child, I would meet with the child, staff and family and provide training and guidance, to ensure the child recieved the best care possible. I have a degree in Social Anthropology and am extremely interested in learning about other cultures. Over the years I have also gained a lot of experience in hospitality and retail, as well as holding a research position for the Scottish Government for 6 months, and carrying out admin, office and book keeping duties. I am happy to provide more details on any of the above, if you are interested.
Sam: I work as a civil servant for a branch of the Scottish government which tests and certifies which crops can be grown, as well as carrying out general agricultural sciences. As part of this process we grow all the crops as trials and so I have extensive arable farming experience. I am a fully qualified tractor driver, telehandler fork lift operator, chainsaw and horticulture mower operator. The farm has also given me extensive general estate maintenance experience in fencing, drainage, woodland managaement etc. I am also a fully qualified bicycle mechanic and held this job for several years, being promoted to workshop manager in a larger bicycle shop in Edinburgh; now I maintain tractors and other farm equipment. In a previous life I worked installing and maintaining IT systems for large bussinesses (banks, insurance compainies) in London and as such have extensive IT experience.
We are happy to provide copies of any qualifications.
Together we also volunteer for an animal foster charity, caring for animals in our own home while their owners have been temporarily unable to, e.g. due to being a hospital inpatient. This has ranged from a couple of weeks to 8 months, and so far has included cats and dogs, but we are willing to take other animals too. We both grew up with pets and love caring for animals.
We are very handy - Sam especially - and we completely renovated our Edinburgh tenement flat and garden ourselves. This included plastering and painting every room, redoing some flooring, completely tearing out and creating a new bathroom, and installing all new windows. In the garden we removed a lot of brash and bramble, planted new trees and bushes, created a wildflower area and installed a pond (which now has several frogs living in it!)
We are very hard-working, love learning and getting involved in different projects, and the satisfaction of seeing the fruits of hard labour.
We love to cook together (Sam is an excellent cook) and to share meals. We are vegetarian - we don't eat meat but we do eat other animals products such as cheese, milk, eggs. We would love to cook some vegetarian meals for you. If being vegetarian makes things difficult then we are happy to prepare (and share) our own food.
