Hi. Our names are Liv and Holly, we’re aged 25 and 31. We have just landed in Australia after travelling around Asia for 3 weeks.

Our aim is to travel the east coast whilst also working so we have the opportunity to see as much of Australia as possible.

We’re keen to meet people from all over the world to share their travel experiences with us.

Quais são suas habilidades?
In the UK I’ve worked as a Project Manager for over 10 years in multiple industries. I’ve also spent 15 years as a netball coach and umpire for local junior and adult netball clubs. I love to spend my spare time in the kitchen cooking!

My partner Liv has a small engineering background in the aerospace industry but more frequently, has volunteered at a Winter Shelter to help accommodate and feed those in need. Liv grew up around animals, with lots of experience taking care of cats and dogs and was lucky enough to have her own pony when she was younger.

In our spare time, we both love to play netball, love to keep fit, enjoy hiking and love spending time outdoors.

I very disappointed that you have left such a negative review given my otherwise impeccable track record.

I just urge other potential workawayers to read the other super positive reviews for a more balanced perspective.

We don’t really know where to start.
Maybe by saying Alison was super friendly and seems to be a lovely person, she picked us up from the train station when we arrived which was around 9.30pm. The hospitality we received was also great. Alison had made us soup for tea which was very thoughtful. Coco the dog was also very sweet.

However, our… read more initial 10 night work away turned into 2 pretty quickly. We left early one morning with no discussion with Alison. Which, when we replied to her message, we apologised for and explained that we just did not feel comfortable at all. Workaways’ advice is to listen to your gut feeling and get out if this is the case.

When we were shown the studio to where we’d be staying, we were grateful, 10 days is a long time and a lot of money saved on accommodation. A bed is a bed at the end of the day and we didn’t need much. However, the studio that was shown in the pictures had completely changed. It was spacious as described. The bed was multiple mattresses stacked on wooden pallets. The bedding was more sheets and blankets. There were nets across the windows but no way of shutting the windows so noises were loud on a night from possums etc and no way of regulating temperature in the studio e.g heating or air con. When we arrived, we were told about ‘workers’ staying in accommodation close by and that we’d be sharing the bathroom facilities with them. We weren’t aware of this before. Due to this, we were told we can shower before 5pm as the workers are back around 6pm. We don’t mind sharing but the timing part was quite restricting for us. Especially because we like to exercise in the evenings when it’s cooler.

When we were out for the day, we received a message from Alison saying she’d left some lunch in the studio. We fully appreciate the intentions were good. However, we do believe that permission should be sought as all of our belongings were there and we were not.

The first day Alison said we can have off as she hadn’t finished her notes for the work we’d be doing over the course of our stay. We took this opportunity to explore the centre of Mackay and surrounding areas. The bikes were very useful.
The problem wasn’t just the false pictures of the studio but the false portrayal of Mackay. We booked based on the profile as it just sounded perfect and ‘less well known to tourists’ was accurate- we figured there was a reason for this.

There was some small drama at the train station, Alison had apologised and said that that is out of character for Mackay. Later in our stay we quickly figured out that it was actually an accurate representation of the area. We had people shout from cars at us while biking a couple of times. We had to find last minute accommodation for a night to wait for a train which was arriving at 3am in the morning. We ordered pizza and it was at this point the driver unfortunately told us about the shooting that had just happened. This was followed by a comment by him, ‘you get used to it’.
We were located a 5 minute walk from this. Police advised to stay indoors until they located the shooter, so that is how we spent our time.

This was our first workaway opportunity and honestly we’ve just been a little shocked. We bought train tickets from cairns to Mackay and skipped great backpacking places.
We are frustrated at how far we’ve travelled and we are currently writing this review at Airlie Beach which is a completely different vibe. We saw no other backpackers in Mackay but we’ve seen loads here already. Only been here a couple of hours.

From our first workaway we’ve learnt that an agreement of what kind of work we’d be doing needs to be agreed upfront as to this day, we still have no idea of what we’d have been doing or if there was even any work to be done- we had a vibe that there wasn’t much to do.

I know Alison will be upset with this review as she asked us not to review at all but we had to ignore this. If we’d have seen a review like this it would have saved us time and in the long run, we are just out of pocket with having to relocate. Some backpackers are travelling solo and we’d hate for them to be in the same position on their own. We’ve spent 3 days just feeling uncomfortable and at points, scared.
I’d like to emphasise that Mackay is NOT a place for backpackers. Yes there was a nice sunrise, yes it’s quiet, yes there’s places to walk. But you can find this anywhere!
