Hi all!
My name is Rhys, I'm 23 years old and currently working small hours as a private tutor of history as I prepare my travel plans. I'm based in Leeds, England- a city that I love, but I’ve always been a keen traveller, my mum and I lived in Cyprus when I was younger and I was lucky enough to visit a variety of countries growing up including Tanzania, Tunisia and America and, prior to Covid-19 I partook in 3 different help exchanges in Peru, California and France whilst solo-travelling on my gap year. I also used workaway to explore Girona Spain in 2022.

I'm greatly appreciative of all of these experiences, they showed me that it was possible to balance having a stable, comfortable life with feeling free and flexible which is something I want for myself in future. I also appreciate the different natural landscapes in these places which I often like to sketch/draw - the rainforest in Peru especially captured my heart as I love greenery and since have tried to fill my home in the city with plants to make up for a lack of garden!

I have some reasonable familiarity with Spanish (enhanced by my time in Spain and South America) as well extensive experience in various types of work from hostel bar work and food service in Peru to gardening and maintenance work in Spain, California and France both through helpx/workaway placements as well as full-time and self-employed work in the UK in hospitality and the legal sector.

Last year, I finished my history degree from the University of Leeds, from which I went on to pursue a career as a paralegal. Unfortunately, this job wasn't for me and I have since planned to take more control over my life and well-being, work more independently and enjoy exploring the world as I do so. I have recently completed my TEFL course which makes me qualified to teach others English as a Foreign Language- I have plenty of resources and ideas so I'm more than happy to share this with people I encounter on my journey.

Another ambition of mine is to grow my love for food and cooking into short form content that I can share with others around the world, so I'd welcome any chances to cook for or with people, learn new recipes as well as improve my content creating skills. But aside from the content, I simply adore food and cooking for my friends and, of course, for those I meet along my travels! I have a range of cooking influences and dishes I like from halloumi ravioli pasta to birria tacos to shawarma and roast dinners.

Quais são suas habilidades?

Up to the age of 19/20 I spent some summers working a paid job at a lively Italian café in Cambridge, whilst others were spent working as a market vendor each year. I also did bar work and waitering in Cusco (Peru) with helpx in 2019. I also enjoy doing manual and gardening work as I was tasked with at helpx placements in California and in the Loire Valley in France. I also have some volunteering experience which I completed for my Duke of Edinburgh Award helping at a stable and as an assistant at a youth club. In 2022 I assisted a host at a large farmstay BnB in the South of Spain through helpx, as well as gardening and maintenance jobs in the Girona area at a workaway.

As well as my experience working as a paralegal which provided me with great organisational skills and more, I have a history degree from the University of Leeds in which I focused on consumable history and the history of food and the ways in which people are connected through what they eat/drink.

I also have a TEFL qualification so I'm able to help people improve their English skills. It would be great to have conversations with people about both history and languages during my time abroad.

I have an unbridled love for cooking too, I've recently learnt some new skills in bread making and how to smoke meat on a bbq. I often make focaccia and banana breads as well as slow cooked pork or beef tacos. I have a good knowledge of Greek food too, as I have some Cypriot family who have passed on their recipes like lemon chicken, halloumi platters and kebabs to me. I'm always happy to cook for and share methods with people!

I love basketball and football if there's anyone who also has a passion I would be happy to have a game some time! ;) I also love to cook and picking good/fresh ingredients to do so. For anyone who is an avid listener of music I'm a fan of many sounds from rap/hip-hop to reggaeton to afrobeats and love to listen to new genres also if people are open to sharing.
