Hi there,
We Fabi (Fabian) and Marlene are a young couple, we are both 26 years old and from Germany. We moved to Hamburg about four years ago to start a new chapter in our lives. Now the time has come and we are looking forward to the next chapter. So we decided to take a gap year and do some travelling together.
About Fabi
I have just finished my bachelor's degree as a biology teacher for people with disabilities and will start my master's degree in October 2025.
I'm a quiet, respectful person with a positive attitude. I love to hang out with other people, share a laugh and have a good time. You'll get the impression that nothing can shake my positive outlook.
Growing up with two sisters, I'm more of a listener than a talker. My parents live in a rural part of Germany, so growing up I helped maintain the garden, prepare firewood for the winter and catch ducks and chickens to bring in at night, which means I am not afraid of physical work.
I grew up with a dog, but I'm allergic to cat hair. I'm a down-to-earth guy who doesn't need much to make me happy, and I like being outdoors.
This is my first trip outside of Europe and I'm really excited about it, especially because I'm visiting a country I've always wanted to see with my own eyes. All my life I have been very focused on my education, but now that I am in my mid-twenties I want to see more of the world, gain new skills and experience life in general. That's why I'm looking forward to everything my gap year will bring.
About Marlene
I quit my job to travel with Fabi. I worked in a kindergarten for about 2 ½ years after I finished my studies as a social/youth worker. I loved working with children and the time I spent in the nursery was great.
I'm not sure what I'd like to do in the future, so maybe after my gap year I'd look into doing a different kind of job or even start studying again.
I am an outgoing and down to earth girl. I love being outdoors, going on camping trips and I am not afraid of physical work. I have some experience with wokeaway/helpx as I travelled for about a year and a half after finishing school.
During this long period of travelling I always stayed with hosts and had the most amazing time getting to know people and their culture. I have experience of working with children (of course because that's what I do for my living) and with all kinds of animals, for example I've been riding horses for about 9 years (although I haven't ridden for a while), sheep/cattle because I've worked on a big sheep and cattle station in Australia for a little bit, camels because I've helped out at Camel Tracks Australia and I grew up with a lovely family dog.
My school taught us woodwork and organic gardening, so I have some experience of growing organic vegetables. I'm really excited to be travelling again and this time with my partner, I'm looking forward to amazing experiences, seeing beautiful nature and meeting new people.
What else about us, we both have a driving license (even an international license) for a manual car /stick driving. As you can see we are both very social people, we love to get to know other countries, cultures and their habits and of course our hosts.
We have both been vegetarians for the last three years, but are willing to change our eating habits.
We both speak fluent English, Fabi has his school English and is willing to learn more and get some routine in speaking, and Marlene’s English is good because of her travels but a bit rusty. But after a few days the rustiness will disappear. We are both eager and happy to learn new things and hope to have a good time with you.
Our experience in Canada so far:
We arrived in Canada in mid-November 2024.
We started working at "Little Beaver Creek Ranch", a now private cowboy and country club 45 minutes drive from Merritt. Here we helped keep the place in shape. Decorating for Christmas and shovelling snow. They had just bought a couple of Angus cattle, one calved early and was kept in a sable. We looked after her and the little baby. We also looked after the chickens and made the chicken coup.
The next host was a luxury resort on Vancouver Island, a 50 minute boat ride from Tofino in the beautiful rainforest. The resort was closed for the winter and they need help maintaining the property and exercising the 11 horses. Fabi did learn a little about horse handling, but mostly helping the maintenance team with any projects they need done. Marlene helped mostly with the horses, grooming, ground work, trail rides and feeding was a daily task for her.
When we left Tofino and the beautiful Calyqout Sound, we stayed in Victoria and did house and dog sitting. While the owners went on holiday. We also helped them build garden beds and did some other maintenance projects.
After a month we wanted to get out of the city, we had realised that we would rather be in the middle of nowhere than in a busy city, so we moved to Galiano Island for three weeks. We stayed and helped on a fruit and vegetable farm. Mostly we weeded the beds and got them ready for spring. We really enjoyed being back in nature where we could see lots of wildlife.
Since the end of April we are now in the Yukon, working in a bistro. Fabi is helping in the kitchen and Marlene is helping at the bar. We are really enjoying our time here. We will be here until the end of June.
!!! WE ARE NOW LOOKING for: a work-away opportunity for two months starting in August. We really want to help out on a cattle ranch, or a farm with lots of animals!!!
We really enjoy living and working in a remote area with wilderness and endless nature on our doorstep. We are looking forward to our next experience :)
You may have concerns about us being a couple, but we can assure you that although we are a couple, we are still two individuals who can do things on our own. We have been together for around 5 years. We are very respectful of each other, don't argue much and are able to work independently. We want to have an experience as a couple, but that doesn't mean we have to do everything together. Working on different projects alone would be just as good for us as working together.

Marlene, knows a little about horses, as a farm hand in Australia I have some knowledge about repairs and everything that needs to be done on a farm.I also have a bit of experience in the hostel business, as I worked at the reception in the hostel for half a year. I have a lot of experience in childcare.
Fabi is familiar with caring for people with disabilities. I am a handyman I know a little bit about stuff you need to repair at home and in the garden. We both want to learn a lot and are curious about how other cultures live. We both like to cook and we're good at it. Maybe we can cook a few German dishes for you?Idade

We like vegetarian food, but we would also eat meat. Marlene doesn't eat fish and Fabi only eats it very rarely.
