Hi! My name is Kara, I am 19 years old and graduated from high school last year.
A couple of fun facts about me:
- My mother tongue is German but I absolutely adore the English language.
- I love animals & nature. I did horseriding when I was a kid, love literally every dog I see and will, without fail, point out every pretty cloud or tree I see.
- I am an artist. I fell in love with acting when I was in 3rd grade and became passionate about dancing about 2 years ago. I'm also a big fan of poetry & music.
- Furthermore, I'm interested in photography & psychology.
- Healthy open communication is extremely important to me! I'm very insightful and always ready to find a compromise both parties are happy with. I'm caring, sensitive, funny & easy-going, you just have to talk to me :)

I worked in my former school's cafeteria (preparing waffles/toasts etc. cashier) for 1 year.

I worked as a Stagehand (setup and dismantling for concerts/festivals) in Germany for 4 months.

I worked as a Media Buying Assistant in Ireland for 3 months.

I worked in a hostel in Portugal for 2 months.

I worked on a alpaca farm (with all different kinds of animals) in Germany for 1 month.

I stayed with Halla and her daughter for a bit over a month in August/September. As I was already in Iceland, they kindly picked me up in Reykjavík. 20 minutes into the car ride, I felt like I could talk and share freely without being judged.
Halla will provide you with a very local experience. She knows a lot of things, so ask away! She's… read more caring, fair and wants you to make the most out of your experience.
I got to stay in the big room on the top floor and absolutely loved it! I felt very comfortable. It was cozy and private.
My morning routine consisted of checking up on all the animals, feeding them and changing their water. Halla is working on a system with lists (morning chores, afternoon chores, weekly, monthly...) to help you keep track of what needs to be done. There are always a lot of different additional projects coming up and you can help with whatever you're good at or you'd enjoy learning!
The horses are adorable and very affectionate. Don't be fooled by their pretty faces tho because when you try to get them to switch fields, they will use every trick in the book to stay on the grass longer!! I miss them dearly :(
The dogs love attention and will accompany you to every outside task you attend to . They're lovely.
If you have good organisation skills, you will be greatly appreciated. If you can't handle messy, this isn't for you. There are always dishes to be done and clothes on the floor. The house will always be as clean as you keep it. Mind you, there are 3 dogs (and a new puppy) running around as well as 5 cats, so you really can't be scared of animal hair because, naturally, it'll be everywhere. The bathroom isn't ideal, but bearable.
If you can cook that's a big plus since it can get a bit chaotic and irregular at times.
Her daughter doesn't have a screentime or strict rules in general which felt a bit challenging to adjust to for me at first. I quickly figured out if you treat her nicely, listen to her and (best case scenario) if you're interested in makeup and on top of the newest Tiktok slang, you'll be fine. She can be full of surprises, in a good way ;). We (just me and her) went swimming (+ eating ice cream afterwards, of course!) twice and had a blast.
I was lucky enough to see the Northern lights quite often, mostly due to Halla being kind enough to let me know every time they were visible. (Thanks again!)
Halla felt a friend. Once I was feeling really bad and started crying on the phone, without any hesitation she offered to come back and be there for me even though she had just left for work. Even though I didn't pick her up on her offer, it just showed me how I was valued as a human being here. Another example of this was Halla buying me cough syrup right away when I got sick and without expecting anything in return.
Halla is super grateful and appreciative of the help she gets. I was the only Workawayer for most of my stay and she greeted my efforts and active attitude with generosity and gratitude. She spontaneously bought a second car while I was there (you'll find a sticker claiming it as almost my property hehe) and I hold the trust I was given in high regard.
I was lucky enough to be in Iceland during the shepherding season and Halla made a whole adventure out of it and also taught me how to ride with two horses at hand.
I learned not to take everything personally and accept people for who they are. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
I got to know a strong, very capable woman who you can talk to and have a lot of fun with, raising an equally strong little girly pop!

I stayed with Anna for ~ 3 weeks in August and worked with two other Workawayers (Lili and Simone, shoutout to you guys!! 🫶) and Sabrina (German girl who's been living there for 3 years).

I landed late at night in Reykjavik and Anna made it possible for me to stay at her brother's place for a night and they even trusted me to bring their car up… read more to the North. I am very grateful for how my arrival was handled.

The tasks vary and depend on the days. There's no strict schedule (which is quite common in families), so you have to establish your hours and days off yourself. Anna tries to give you good weather days off and sometimes lends you her car if it suits.

I think this place is best suited for people who intend to stay longer as it seemed to me that it takes a while until you feel like you are part of the crew. Sometimes I felt like I was treated a bit impersonal and with a lack of care, but I'm also bearing in mind that Anna was away for work a lot during my stay. One time we were all hanging out on the couch, watched a show and Anna brought ice cream and spoons for everyone, so that on the other hand was very lovely and felt like a chill girls night.

Communication was often unclear and plans very spontaneous. Sabrina cooks dinner most of the time, but you have to make lunch yourself.

The kids are absolutely lovely and dive right into showing you their toys the moment you walk in the door. I had no issues with the both of them as they are super friendly, intelligent and fair. This was my first experience in kidsitting and I'm very grateful I got so lucky. They're very active, so keep up!

Depending on how many tours have been booked that day, it's possible to ride almost every day. The horses are super calm, easy and adorable!

It was so fun to hear Anna tell all her horse stories that involve A LOT of action...

On my second last day, Sabrina taught me how to drive the tractor which was incredibly cool and generous of her. I had a blast. Thank you again.

On my last evening I got a hat that Anna's mom knitted herself. It has little hearts and sheep on it and I thought it was so sweet!

After I left, I spend some more time I'm Iceland and eventually asked if I could come back for a day and be part of the shepherding which Anna immediately responded to and confirmed. So so grateful for the experience!

Ich habe 5 Wochen verbracht und hab mich schnell wie ein Teil der Familie gefühlt. Alex hat mich vom Bahnhof abgeholt und auch nicht die Nerven verloren, als ich an der falschen Station ausgestiegen bin (sorry nochmal), am Hof habe ich erst Katharina kennengelernt (in ihrem "Hallo!" schwingt so viel Herzlichkeit mit, dass man innerhalb kürzester… read more Zeit den Vibe des Hofs zu spüren bekommt) und dann Frank (der wirklich immer darauf bedacht ist, dass es einem gut geht und - wie die ganze Familie - sehr gerne Witze reißt), ein paar Tage später auch Benni (der es leider nicht zugelassen hätte, dass ich Luzifer - seine Hündin - einfach mit einpacke :( Minuspunkte dafür).
Wer einen guten Sinn für Humor hat, wird sich mit allen blendend verstehen.

Jeder Tag beginnt um 7:55 Uhr, Treffpunkt vorm Haus. Gemeinsam wird dann mit Auto/Kobata zu den Stallungen gefahren. Die erste Aufgabe ist jeden Morgen gleich: Heuraufen befüllen bzw. ausmisten. Im Anschluss Blumen gießen und Tische wischen. Hengstwiese ab misten steht auch jeden Tag an. Die restlichen Aufgaben (Pferdewiese/Stutenwiese/Lamatoilette/Rentnerwiese/Kängurugehege etc. ab misten, Tiere rein-/rausbringen, Tiere für Touren vorbereiten, Touren evtl. mit Trainingstier mitlaufen etc.) können von Tag zu Tag variieren oder sind an bestimmte Tage/Bedingungen gebunden. Als ich da war, wurden z.B. die Alpakas geschoren, ich habe zweimal im Hofladen gearbeitet, durfte mit Katharina mit 2 Alpakas einem Altenheim einen Besuch abstatten, beim Streichen (Dach) und Schleifen (Zaun) helfen uvm..

Es gibt eine WG (3 FÖJler + 1 WorkAway) und ein extra Zimmer (ausgestattet mit Bad und Küche) für einen WorkAway. Jeder frühstückt für sich, Alex kocht jeden Tag Mittags- und Abendessen (Mittwoch nur Mittag, Sonntag nur Frühstück). Das Essen schmeckt gut und Vegetarier
sind grundsätzlich berücksichtigt.

Der nächste Bus, beim Kloster Eberbach, ist 20/30 Minuten Fußweg entfernt. Das Gelände ist von wunderschönem Wald umgeben. Wer es ruhig (mal von den Pfauen abgesehen) mag und gerne spazieren geht, ist auf jeden Fall gut bedient. Wer Party machen möchte, kann zwar nach Wiesbaden etc. fahren, aber wer das Stadtleben sucht, ist hier definitiv falsch. Wer sich vor Scheiße aufsammeln scheut, auch haha.

Das gesamte Anwesen ist wirklich wunderschön und liebevoll gestaltet.

Die Tiere fühlen sich offensichtlich sehr wohl und man merkt stark, dass die Familie mit Herzblut bei der Sache ist.
Die freuen sich immer, wenn man Interesse zeigt und beantworten gerne alle möglichen Fragen.

Wer Kontakt zu Tier, Mensch und Natur sucht, sollte Frank definitiv anschreiben :)

Ich würde auf jeden Fall wieder kommen (spätestens wenn Luzifer Babys hat 🫣😍).

If you're interested in bikes/bodybuilding/photography/music/being self-sufficient/building and looking for a quiet surrounding, you might've just hit the Jackpot finding this Workaway.

Speaking of Dusty, he's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. He's so gentle in everything he does, visibly listens to and cares about you, is incredibly handsome and just lovely. And if you want to give back some of the joy he'll bring you by being around him, throw him a stick (or literally anything that is throwable - a frisbee, a sock...it really doesn't matter) - you'll make his day.

About the host - Oliver is an incredibly generous host who wants you to feel at home. He enjoys teaching people and it shows...the two biggest things I'd like to mention here are riding a dirtbike & bodybuilding. You've never ridden a dirtbike before? No problemo, this will be a great first experience.
Whether you're already into training or want to get into training- Oliver can turn your flat ass into a hot one...the only condition: you have to put in effort and be motivated. No whining about leg day, there's no skipping leg day!!!!
Oliver is the most grateful person I've ever talked to. When I brought it up, amazed by how regularly he practices gratitude, he simply said "I don't practice it, I feel it"- which, as one can imagine, is a beautiful vibe to be around.

My work consisted of various things & will probably always be unique for every individual (depending on what's going on - generally as well as building-wise, your skills and likings and, of course, what's agreed upon beforehand). Worth mentioning is definitely that you won't be working FOR but rather WITH someone. It's more like living/working together and finding a routine everyone feels comfortable with.
This works best if you're an energetic/enthusiastic person, approaching things with a "Let's do it!"-mentality. Finding a balance of giving and receiving is crucial and easy with a host like Oliver.

Making conversation with him is a joy and never awkward...there are a lot of topics you could find common ground on. If you're a big movie fan - bingo. If you like to sing...go for it, there's a guitar around. Be free.
