We’re from the NJ in the U.S. and are excited to dive into hands-on work connecting us with nature and community—especially gardening, sustainable living, and cooking with seasonal, local ingredients

  • Descrição

Hi there! We’re Jess and Irvin—a married couple from New Jersey setting off on a new chapter of life together, one rooted in simplicity, community, and deeper connection with the land.

After years of fast-paced living and careers that kept us indoors and in front of screens, we’re ready for something slower and more meaningful: shared experiences, immersing ourselves in a different way of living and being, and a deeper connection with the land and the food we eat. We're both new to Workaway, but we’re deeply mindful, reliable, heart-centered people in our 30s who show up with openness and a deep desire to learn.

    A little about Jess:

After a 10+ year career in marketing, I'm taking a break to slow down and reconnect. Next year, I’ll be starting a master’s program in either Women’s Spirituality or Clinical Counseling to be of deeper service to the world.

I love reading (right now I'm on a fantasy novel kick, but I also find myself drawn to books that explore mythology, psychology, and the wisdom of the Earth). What motivates me most is connection—real, heart-centered connection with people, land, and purpose. I'm happiest when sharing meals, stories, and laughter around a table, learning from others' ways of life, and forming lasting bonds with the families and communities we meet along the way. I also love exploring new places! I believe in mutual support, in the power of presence, and in the joy that comes from life's simple moments—whether it's playing a fun board game, cooking together with a glass of wine, or watching the stars.

I'm especially excited to contribute to spaces that value slow, intentional living and shared joy. I hope not just to help, but to be part of something meaningful—something that grounds me more deeply in a place, in relationship with others, and in connection with the land. As for me, I’m warm, down-to-earth, and always excited to learn something new.

    A little about Irvin:

I’m a passionate cook who recently completed the Ayurvedic Nutrition and Culinary Training (ANACT) program through Divya Alter in New York City. Food for me is an expression of love, a universal language in which you can show someone care and kindness even if you can't communicate using words.

I also find great joy in teaching others how to cook because I believe many people, especially here in the U.S., have lost their connection to food and the art of cooking. Helping others restore that connection and gain the skills to prepare nourishing meals for themselves is deeply motivating. I'm especially interested in healthy, nourishing food that supports both body and spirit.

I’m looking for more hands-on experience, especially in places where I can learn from others who’ve been doing this longer than I have. I’m eager to expand my skills by working with seasonal/locally grown ingredients, learning how to make things like fresh pasta, and helping to prepare meals that bring people together. I’m friendly, hard-working, and always up for a good laugh—and I’m hoping the connections we make on this journey will last a lifetime. I’d love to find spaces we can return to again and again to continue learning, contributing, and staying connected.

    Why we’re here:

We grew up in urban/suburban communities—not exactly the kind of places where you raise animals or tend gardens. Over time, we’ve become more and more curious about what it means to live in right relationship with the land and our food. We want to live differently: more rooted, more intentional, and more connected to the food we eat and the communities we’re part of.

Irvin especially wants to deepen his cooking skills, work closely with mentors, and learn more hands-on techniques—whether that’s working with fresh, seasonal ingredients, making pasta from scratch, or exploring traditional methods of preparing nourishing meals. I (Jess) am especially interested in learning to live more closely with the land—whether that’s helping tend gardens, caring for animals, or other creative projects.

Our goal isn’t just to help—it’s to participate, to grow, and to share joy. We’re excited to give, learn, and be part of something meaningful—something that grounds us in people, place, and purpose.

    Jess

My current skills—things like writing, digital marketing, etc.—don’t exactly match the kind of hands-on work I’m hoping to explore through Workaway. But that’s exactly why I’m here. I’m craving something more grounded, more connected to the rhythms of land, food, and daily life.

I’m especially eager to learn about gardening, growing/harvesting food, and living in closer relationship with the natural world. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty, I learn quickly, and I bring a lot of heart and presence to everything I do. I speak English fluently and am also happy to share any of my existing skills if they ever come in handy!

    Irvin

I have a background in Exercise Science from The College of New Jersey and have been a strength and conditioning coach for over 13 years. I hold four certifications in fitness and specialize in helping people build a strong foundation in movement, strength, and body awareness—always with the mindset that real change takes both guidance and self-discipline.

Over the last five years, I’ve shifted my focus toward Ayurvedic cooking and nutrition. I’ve completed certifications in both nutrition coaching and Ayurvedic Nutrition and Culinary Training.

After years of coaching, teaching has become a natural part of how I connect with others. While I’ve built a solid foundation, I know there’s always more to learn when it comes to truly mastering the art of teaching—and I’m excited to keep growing in that area.
