Teaching Experience :

I spent 2.5 months at this Workaway, and it’s been one of the most enriching experiences I’ve had. Teaching here allowed me to dive deep into a community eager to learn, while also testing a curriculum I developed to teach Artificial Intelligence in low-tech environments. Uganda was the perfect place to see how it could work… read more in real life. The teaching schedule can be flexible based on your goals: I chose to teach five days a week for about 2-3 hours each day because I wanted to fully immerse myself in the educational system. But if you’re hoping to balance teaching with seeing more of the country, you can work with Bernadete and Michael to set an ideal schedule.

I didn’t go on many tourist excursions—I focused on teaching and found the most rewarding cultural exchanges happened in the classroom. You’ll meet students from all sorts of backgrounds, each bringing something unique to the experience. I worked primarily with secondary students, but if you prefer teaching younger kids, Bernadete is great at organizing that too. Bernadete and Michael went above and beyond to accommodate my goals. Even during off-season, when schools were preparing for national exams and wouldn’t normally accept volunteers, Bernadete arranged for me to still teach, and Michael helped make sure everything ran smoothly. They’re both incredibly supportive and genuinely care about your experience.

Teaching the secondary students was a joy. They’re lively and love to have fun, so if you want a focused teaching environment, setting those expectations early on will help as they can get quite rowdy if you don't.

Housing Experience

The housing was comfortable! Since I was the only volunteer at the time, I had a room to myself, and they provided three meals a day. If you can, it’s nice to pitch in by helping with cooking or bringing some extra ingredients. The meals are delicious, with something for everyone—whether you’re vegetarian or not. Big thanks to Nusura and Bernadete for the variety and love they put into every meal. Don’t miss out on the "chicken royal" pizza on Mondays and Thursdays, when they offer a buy-one-get-one-free deal—it’s around $10 and totally worth it.

They have three adorable dogs, and while I was there, one of them, Luey, had puppies, so there might be even more by the time you arrive! There’s also a sweet two-year-old, Anne, who is full of energy and will definitely leave an impression. She loves to help out, and we spent a lot of time playing together. Nusura, the house manager, is amazing—she keeps everything running smoothly, from meals to cleanliness, and she’s a joy to be around. We shared many laughs watching funny videos together.

For laundry, handwashing is the standard. Nusura is kind enough to help with washing clothes if you need it, but you’ll need to handle your underwear yourself. If she does help, a small tip would mean a lot to her.

There’s Wi-Fi, generally about 3-8 Mbps, which is good for basic browsing and video watching. If you need more speed, you can get a temporary Wi-Fi boost, which increases it to around 10-20 Mbps. Power outages are common (usually 2-3 times a week due to issues with the transformer, hopefully fixed by now). Rain also tends to cause temporary outages, so having a battery backup is helpful. The Wi-Fi backup lasts about 3-4 hours, so if power is crucial, Michael can take you to a hotel nearby where power is stable.

There’s a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and water comes from rainwater collection. Although I never ran out, it’s good to be mindful of usage, especially if it hasn’t rained in a while. You’ll also get to meet Bernadete and Michael’s twins, Ringsler and Troy. They’re usually at boarding school but come home during breaks, and they’re great to have around.

All in all, it was a beautiful experience, and I couldn’t recommend it enough for anyone looking to make a meaningful contribution while discovering the local culture.

Starting this journey, I was venturing into something completely new—my first experience with neurodiverse… read more children. This experience has not only broadened my understanding but also sparked a dream for the kind of inclusive education neurodiverse children deserve. At first, I was curious about the name," but now I see how well it reflects the school's mission: to create a safe space for kids to explore their curiosity and build the self-confidence needed to become eager learners, rather than rushing them into deciding their futures without understanding themselves.

Our society often hurries kids into adulthood, pushing them towards practical decisions before they've had a chance to truly discover who they are. This school stands out by offering a space where children are encouraged to explore, to be curious, and to develop the confidence to find their own paths.

The founder once told me that the goal is to make our children feel safe and confident in themselves, acknowledging that building this confidence might take years—and that's perfectly okay. The variety of workshops available here has been amazing, offering the children endless opportunities to discover new interests.

I want to express my deepest thanks to Esma, whose leadership and understanding of emotional nuances create the heart of this place. Her ability to connect with people, especially the children, and provide them with the freedom and patience they need to grow is nothing short of amazing. Esma, your commitment to fostering a welcoming and understanding atmosphere has touched not just the children but everyone you encounter, including me. Your kindness in showing me the beauty of Cappadocia has deeply enriched my experience here.

Fahma, your presence has brought so much warmth and joy—whether it's through your delicious cooking or your motherly affection, you've made this place feel like home. Your laughter and warmth break down any language barriers, creating a bond that everyone can feel.

Hafiz, your quiet dedication has made a huge impact. You've worked tirelessly behind the scenes, caring for the school, the horses, and most importantly, the children. Your actions have taught me so much about commitment, humility, and the silent strength of supporting others.

And to the children, the true heart of this place, you've shown the incredible impact of a supportive and confident environment. Each one of you, with your unique talents, has inspired me to dream of creating a space as special as The Academy for others.

As I look forward to building my own school, the lessons learned here, and the values we've shared, will be my guide. This isn't a farewell, but a promise to come back, as the connections we've made are invaluable, and our shared journey is just beginning. I had an incredible experience during my stay in Saharanpur, teaching at the High School, thanks to Mr. Jawahar, Mrs. Leena, Mr. Amit, and Mrs. Simi's amazing hospitality. From the first day, I was introduced to Sikhism, local cuisine, their temple, and their friends and family. I learned so much! I still remember it was my first time serving hungry people at their temple, which was a profoundly different experience in person, and going to the markets of Saharanpur to see the beautiful woodwork.

Despite their busy schedules, they were incredibly supportive and trusted me to teach my AI course. Their efforts to make my classes run smoothly were greatly appreciated. Their support helped me manage my tendency to overthink and worry. Moments of relaxation and their constant encouragement made a huge difference. This trip gave me many opportunities to learn about myself and reflect on my teaching.

If you are looking to become a better teacher, this is the right place. You get to learn from various types of teachers and their teaching methods and interact with many different kinds of kids, learning how to manage a large group. It was a completely new experience for me, and I learned a lot from it, gaining insights on how to improve my teaching.

The school's commitment to a child-centric environment and openness to new ideas stood out to me. They are always willing to listen, adapt, and address any issues you have. You also get to learn a lot of the important values that go into teaching that will impact how you approach your own teaching. Many of these values are evident in the way they created their schools. If you get the chance, ask them about the origin story of their schools like this.

The loving and caring environment they created for their students brought me so much joy. I want to return and continue learning from them, improving my teaching approach.

A special thanks to Amol, Ladoo/Frank, Ramu, and Mukesh for making me feel at home. Amor, I enjoyed our conversations; Ladoo reminded me of my dogs back home; Ramu, your cooking was incredible; and Mukesh, you were always reliable. Thank you all so much.

For anyone considering a Workaway experience here, I highly recommend it. You'll learn a lot, feel incredibly welcomed, and be inspired by their dedication to education and cultural exchange.

This workaway is AMAZING! For someone who wanted to travel around to understand better if teaching is something I wanted to do, this has grown and solidified my passion for teaching kids and set the vision on what type of values I want my work to have. This school is challenging Bulgaria's traditional rigid educational system. They provide these… read more kids with an independent learning space to have them freely choose their learning path. The idea is to get them interested in the various possibilities and give them the space to discover their interest. Doing this makes kids into lifelong learners as they don't see it as a chore but an enjoyable pursuit of knowledge and growth and take ownership of their education. They bring so many types of volunteers to show the children the various perspectives and cultural ideas. Rachel, the one in charge of the school's volunteer program, does a great job making sure that your skills or interests can be shared with the kids. For example, I had many opportunities to share my hobbies, from teaching programming, chatGPT, machine learning, chess, piano, jump roping, etc. Rachel allowed me to teach programming classes and even train the teachers on chatGPT, showing how open-minded, flexible, and progressive they are. You will also find that the teachers here are very passionate about their work, and you will learn a lot from them. Just being there with the kids and sharing your culture and perspective is a big help to these kids. Matias, one of the incredible volunteers, did a presentation about his country, Costa Rica, and the kids loved it!

My favorite part was the kids. These kids are all unique and special; you will quickly learn new ideas and concepts from them. They are very curious, so when they first meet you, they will ask you tons of questions and try to get to know everything from you, haha. Each school day, we have a 2 hour park time for the kids to play around. They have tons of games like Bull Dog and Detectives. I recommend you join these games with them to get to know them better. If you plan to stay for more than two weeks, maybe the best advice is to take a week to get to know the kids and their names. You will learn a lot. For example, now I am in Turkey, but the reason is that after talking to Yassin, he told me about night trains from Sofia to Istanbul. Oh, and yes, they will also talk a lot about Roblox, hahaha. Thank you all for the fantastic memories! I will miss you all very much and hope to see you again.

Henry is very responsible and plans everything meticulously, even on an individual basis for each student. His personality allows students to trust him and feel confident in practicing English. Henry's main activity was developing the program's website, and he did it excellently. Inside the house, he was very generous, friendly, helpful, and tidy. He integrated very well with each one of us and engaged in activities that he didn't even do in his home country. Henry paso dos meses con nosotros, sin embargo la forma de como pudo conectarse con los estudiantes fue algo impresionante, ellos confiaron en el desde el primer momento, y gracias a eso el proceso de aprendizaje fue mas divertido para ellos. Henry es muy responsable y planifica absolutamente todo, e incluso de manera individual para cada estudiante, su forma de ser permite que los estudiantes confíen en el y se sienten con confianza para practicar inglés. OMG, where do I even begin? If you're reading this and wondering whether to join this Workaway, let me just say: jump into it RIGHT NOW. It's unbelievable how, in just two months, I've grown so close to the Organization's mission and the wonderful family of Antonio and Paula.

Originally, my goal in joining this Workaway was to enhance my branding… read more skills by developing their website. But, oh, it turned out to be so much more than that. I had the amazing opportunity to work as an assistant teacher alongside Stella, a truly inspiring educator, in their Tuesday and Thursday classes. On Wednesdays, I participated in the Conversation Club, helping kids practice their English speaking skills, and on Saturdays, I immersed myself in the full-day class.

The joy of teaching these bright, hardworking kids from Ecuador is indescribable. They just need that chance, and being a part of giving them that is incredibly rewarding. You're not just teaching a language; you're opening up a world of opportunities for them.

What's truly unique about the place is its approach to education. Forget about conventional, textbook-heavy English classes. Here, it's all about interactive learning. As a volunteer, you get to design lesson plans, encouraging you to unleash your creativity and engage students of different ages in various ways. I'll never forget the fun we had during a game of Spectrum with the older students, sparking lively debates and fresh perspectives.

Antonio, Paula, and the other volunteers are always there to support you with ideas and games, fostering a collaborative and innovative teaching environment. The mission of the organization is not just inspiring; it's transformative. They're on a quest to build the first bilingual school in Canar, shaping these kids into global citizens.

The other volunteers, Jack, Genie, Jannis, and Stella, have become like family. We shared unforgettable hikes, trips, and activities. Jack's vegetarian cooking opened my eyes to new flavors and philosophies. Genie, the heart of our group, kept us connected and engaged. Jannis, the coolest and most laid-back of us all, introduced us to the local culture and social events. And Stella, with her strong, independent mindset, was an exceptional teacher and role model.

In between teaching, there was plenty of time to explore Ecuador. Canar's convenient location makes it easy to travel, but often, I found myself just wanting to immerse myself in the local culture right there. From playing volleyball to attending family events with Antonio and Paula, every moment was filled with genuine warmth and cultural richness. Whether it was hiking with Antonio's dad or playing chess with Antonio himself, every day was an adventure. And let's not forget the fitness aspect – you're definitely going to get active here!

To Antonio and Paula: you are the soul of the organization. Your leadership, creativity, and hard work are the driving forces behind this incredible experience. Your vision and dedication have not only touched my life but also the lives of countless others. I can't recommend this Workaway experience enough. I'll miss everyone – the volunteers, the kids, the families, Antonio, and Paula. Thank you all for making this journey so memorable and joyous
