Hi!
I am Håkon, from Norway where I work as a math teacher. I have quite broad interests. I love nature and animals, and like to spend time outside in the forests, in the mountains or close to the sea. I also enjoy science and mathematics, as well as philosophy, language, photography, music and culture.
In particular in am very interested in Japanese culture, Zen Buddhism and Japanese green tea.

I am educated within the natural sciences and work as a teacher. I have previously been doing volunteer work within biodiversity conservation, animal rescue and farming work.
Norwegian is my mother tongue. I speak fluent English, and am working on my Japanese.

He visited Fukuoka before he went to Yakushima.
He is very interested in Japanese culture, especially he is interested in green tea. We tasted and compared various kinds of green tea at many green tea shops in Fukuoka.
He also attended the English cooking class in Fukuoka campus and had contact with the students.

This was my first Workaway, and I could not have wished for a better place to visit. Yakushima is an amazing island with immensely beautiful nature. Combined with an incredibly friendly and welcoming staff, this Workaway was an unforgettable experience for me.

First of all I want to warmly thank Yuki for giving me the opportunity to come to… read more Yakushima, for being extremely helpful in every way imaginable, and in general for being such a nice and kind person. You can ask her about anything and she will reply promptly. If you have the opportunity to go to Fukuoka and see Yuki and the rest of the staff there I highly recommend doing that as well. Everyone there is so friendly and kind, so helpful and hospitable. They took me out for dinner, sightseeing and even to the cinema in Fukuoka. I am very grateful to all of you.

The same goes for the staff at Yakushima. Both at the school and at the farm I felt so welcomed. They are always willing to help you whenever you have a question, and always willing to stop for a chat. They gave us lifts when we needed it, took us to the grocery store, helped out with planning hikes and even took us to a festival one day and dinner and karaoke another day. I would like to warmly thank Mai, Tatsu, Daimon and all of the staff for their hospitality.

The work on the high school consists in participating in team building games with the students, outdoor classes and English classes. I really enjoyed all of them, perhaps the outdoor classes in particular. There you combine hiking in the beautiful nature of Yakushima with interaction with the students. I found all of the students to be very friendly, and many of them were eager to learn English or to hear about foreign culture. I think it was very rewarding to interact with the students.

At the village the work consisted in caring for the plants, watering, removing bugs etc. (It depends a bit on the season.) The work was so nice, I really enjoyed it a lot. Nothing here feels rushed; the work is done at a comfortable speed in beautiful surroundings, chatting a bit with the staff and taking breaks when needed---almost meditative. At midday you will have amazing lunches here.

Thank you again to everyone involved in this Workaway. I am so grateful to all of you for giving me the opportunity to come to Yakushima, for all your help, and for all your kindness.
I highly recommend this Workaway.
