Hi! My name is Esra. I really love being in nature. I enjoy gardening, growing plants and produce some food on my own to a possible extent. I put great importance to sustainability. I love animals. I really enjoy spending time with and taking care of them, including both farm and home animals. I really like the countryside life. I am now living in Lausanne, newly graduated from engineering masters, and I want to be more with nature and animals and do some hand work. I am very interested in understanding the cycle of the nature. Within the Workaway experience I would like to experience different lifestyles including the countryside life and to contribute to people.

I am very keen on arts; these includes dance, music, painting, and literature. I have done ballet for twelve years and I am also a ballet teacher. I gave ballet lessons to the children aged between five and seven. I feel myself very happy and free while I express myself with dance. I also practice yoga and meditation. I do draw, oil painting, self-guided handcraft, DIY. I like outdoor activities like hiking, biking and camping.

I am a calm and open-minded person, but at the same time I also enjoy adventures like wild camping and traveling the countries with bike. I am from Turkey, but for study purposes I lived in Germany, Sweden and now in Switzerland. I like to travel and learn about new cultures.

Quais são suas habilidades?
As I like gardening, growing plants and agriculture, and have experience in them, I can help to take care of the farm, garden.

I am an animal lover and I like to develop good connection with the animals. I can take care of the animals. Throughout my life, I had several cats, a rabbit and a dog. Once, I also helped in a farm with the cows.

I enjoy cooking and baking, and I consider myself as a good cook. Therefore, I can cook (different kind of cuisines) and bake (bread, cakes, cookies etc.). I can help in the household and maintenance, repair mechanical and electrical machines, decorate the house (painting the walls, repairing the furniture, building furniture etc.).

I love teaching and conveying my knowledge to other people. I have experience in teaching ballet and yoga. I also gave lessons to school students about their lectures. I can teach ballet, yoga, pilates, cha cha cha if you are interested. I can also teach my mother tongue, which is Turkish, and I am fluent in English.

Since I studied electrical+biomedical engineering I can help in IT, computer and electronics related tasks.

I take nature, landscape and still life photographs. I like to read books about archaeology, anthropology, psychology, psychology of architecture, philosophy of science, animals and nature, science fiction and climate fiction. I do read novels and short stories. I am interested in understanding the human behavior both in our modern society and throughout the history. Additionally, I have a desire to understand the cycle of the nature and animal behavior. I write essays on various topics, travel diaries and book&movie reviews.

I am very grateful that I could volunteer in Vera’s farmhouse, for the first time in September 2021 and second time in August 2022. First of all Vera is a special person; friendly, open minded, wise, conscious and has a big heart. Once you are there you will learn many things from her about many topics. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to learn and spontaneously practise many topics including sustainable and ecological life-style, permaculture, biodiversity, animal care and animal psychology, which I enjoyed a lot. I also had the opportunity to learn the culture and a bit of Swiss German. Once I became familiar with the goats I could bond with them and we had a fun time together. It is such a pleasure to spend time with and look after them.

The farmhaus is a typical Swiss village house, everything from wood, has a special calm, cosy and natural feeling. The room for the volunteer is big and very comfortable, and has a view of Jungfrau summit. Next to the house there is the stable for the goats and storage for the hay. There is a huge front garden and back garden, full of herbs, vegetable plants and fruit trees, a unique chance to have your own organic food directly from the garden. It is very comfortable and fun to sit and spend time in the garden. I also really enjoyed working in the garden. There is even a wooden little yoga hut in the garden which gets direct sun during sunset and makes it a special place to enjoy the sunset with the goats. Many different kinds of birds are visiting the garden, it is also a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with these birds.

The location is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful places, Interlaken. There is easy access to many wonders of nature such as Lauterbrunnen, Jungfrau, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, Aare river etc. It is surrounded by lakes, mountains, waterfalls and many hiking trails. I went on hikings, did cycling tours and swam in the lakes and rivers during my time there.

Overall, I highly recommend this Workaway opportunity!! I had the chance to learn many things about ecology, animal care, gardening and I grew personally. This experience added many things to my view and helped to broaden my horizon. Additionally, I had time to relax, enjoy nature, visit places, do hiking/cycling and read books/paint .

Since we became friends with Vera we are still exchanging many things and I am visiting her from time to time. I appreciate my connection with her. Thank you Vera for everything!!
