Helloou :)!

Who I am:
My name is Darian, I'm a creative, positive, communicative person who loves to spread some good vibes and talk about mental health, self-care and related things; about life in all its ways. Grateful, keeping a optimistic mindset and still not invalidating the harder times in life describes me fairly well!

I'm currently studying Special Education in Heidelberg and am passionate about learning new things in life, growing and getting to know&love myself and the people around the world more and more. I've got a special place in my heart for all people who've not had the easiest paths in life to take, who've been through some crap and have grown stronger and surpassed all the difficulties in life, as I count myself to those people. It's important to talk about it and share the love and strength!

Interests:
I have varied passions, ranging from drawing to singing and intuitive dancing, as well as reading or walking.

I'm a native German speaker, speak English at C2, reaching around a B1 in German Sign Language and an eeny weeny bit of French. I'd be glad to teach you about the three first ones!

Work experience:
I've worked 1/2 year in a Camphill Community (inclusive living community) in Aberdeen, Scotland and worked 6 hours/week in the garden and 2 hours/week in the wood workshop with adults with disabilities, 16-30 y.o.
Another 1/2 year in a Camphill Community near Bodensee, Germany with adults with disabilities, 30+ y.o. - many of which spent the rest of their life there.
I've now worked for also around 1/2 year with children with disabilities, mostly hearing impairments, in my studies of becoming a special education teacher.

I'm very happy and open to learning new skills and approach diverse tasks. I'd say garden work is my favourite work to calm and regain connection to nature.

My wishes for my workaway(s):
I'm wanting to increase my connection to nature and re-feel the simplicities of life that I felt more when working in the Camphills. I want to get my hands dirty and live life the way it's meant to be lived - simple, kind and tranquil.
Life, especially as a student, can get extremely full, and I'm a person who tends to do 5 things at once, still finding my balance between productivity and breaks.
I'd love to find some tranquility and peace within myself and my head, and I seem to be unable to find in a well-known German university town.
I'm also going to have an Erasmus+-Semester in September in Aveiro, Portugal and adore Portugal and Portuguese.

My ideal workaway would include
1. learning some Portuguese and gaining knowledge on the culture,
2. working, talking, eating together and then relaxing, reading, writing diary, finding tranquility for the rest of it.

Gardening and outdoor work: Familiar with general gardening tasks, happy to take on the less familiar ones.

Wow, what an experience this was. First of all, as we all so often say: Thank you :))!
I have spent 4 weeks here. This was my first workaway-experience, and I coulnd't have chosen any better place.
I now know that there are more workaway-experiences for me to come, and even more certain that I will visit you lovely guys from September on… read more 😍😍!

James is such a warm, kind and wise soul and has influenced me greatly on this trip; Svit has turned out to be a long lost big sister to me; Stan is just a virtuose with the tongue drum and a cooking genius.
I've read this on a review for the project before: "This place attracts the kindest kind of people" - "Maria Magdalena, it's true" ;)! Among the named three, all the other volunteers were just such pleasant, great and joyful people I'm glad I got to spend the time with.
I was treated so kindly, respectfully and cooperatively that I can recommend this place to any person who feels drawn in by the reviews written and the vibe shared through this Workaway-page!

For future volunteers, I recommend ...
• packing clothes that 1. mainly feel comfortable to wear, and 2. you don't care about that much.
--> You will be working on the land, fighting big bad brambles, fences or getting on the ground to prepare veg beds or plant seeds. Your clothes will take a beating, but once you've fully arrived, you'll care even less about it, as the atmosphere is a natural and grounded one.

• packing for both cold, wet and warm, drier weather.
--> in my time of March-April at least, it was quite cold in the morning and then two hours into working, you've taken off 3 layers and began to sweat. The weather in the magic mountains is harder to predict and sometimes fluent in its changes. You will still likely get your sunny days to go to beautiful river spots and enjoy the stunningly gorgeous nature of the surroundings, though!

• being open to embrace a healing kind of culture shock.
--> Some people might not be that used to mindful, open communication and people caringly looking out for one another. Here, when you feel ready to open up, share your thoughts or worries, you will find that you're accepted, held and respected.

• to approach this place knowing it's a place where you might experience a deeper connection to and understanding of yourself.
--> The atmosphere, the people and the nature became such a safe space to me, and it was commonly mentioned by everyone how this is a place where transformative inner processes often find their space and can be shared with others. It is important to know, though, that all this isn't sure to happen in any way. Neither can you force it, nor do you need to any kind of deeper looks inside: If you just want to be here to have a blast, you've got the perfect people for that as well here!

• communicating certain needs and thoughts beforehand.
--> For me, as this was my first workaway and I can sometimes get into my head, I was a bit worried about flying from Germany to Portugal to a place, to people I've never seen before. I've communicated my worries with James, letting him know how I feel. We then had a phone call before, helping me get more information and also a calmer feeling with everything; he was solicitous, took me serious and helped me ease my mind beforehand. Thank you again for that, James!

Words can only say so much, and I've written and said to you guys everything wanted and needed to be said. My love for this place and you guys will now forever remain with me on my right arm 🥹💗💗.
