Descrição
Hi! We're Astrid and Tono, living on the beautiful island of Karimunjawa, Indonesia, with our two children, Sophia (7) and Alfie (4).
We run the island's only solar-powered guesthouse and are also deeply involved in Kejora, a bilingual, nature-based school and educational foundation for local children.
Life here is simple, busy and closely connected to nature. Between raising our family, welcoming guests and supporting our community, we're slowly creating a way of life that reflects the values we care most about: sustainability, education, connection and living gently on the land.
Our newest adventure is transforming the area around our home into a thriving regenerative garden. We dream of growing more of our own food, improving the health of the land, creating beautiful spaces for people to gather, and designing water systems that help the landscape flourish through the dry season.
This is very much a learning journey for us too. While we've started planting and experimenting, we're looking for people who are excited to share their knowledge, work alongside us and help turn ideas into reality.
Our home is relaxed, welcoming and family-oriented. We enjoy sharing meals, spending time outdoors, swimming, exploring the island and learning from the wonderful people who pass through our lives.
If you're looking for a meaningful exchange where you can contribute to a long-term vision while experiencing authentic island life, we'd love to hear from you. -

Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado
Living with us in Karimunjawa is not a typical Workaway experience, it is an invitation into island life, off-grid rhythms, and a family deeply rooted in nature and community.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Immerse yourself in a remote tropical island environment
- Swim, snorkel and explore largely untouched beaches
- Experience off-grid, solar-powered living
- Witness firsthand how eco-tourism and mindful hospitality operate in a small island setting
- Learn about local conservation efforts and community-led initiatives
- Experience life connected to land, sea and slow rhythms
Astrid is a dedicated yoga teacher, and while she cannot promise daily involvement (as volunteers will often be supporting with the children during teaching hours), there may be opportunities to join selected classes, practice independently in beautiful spaces, and deepen your own personal practice.
Island life here requires adaptability, patience and openness. In return, it offers sunsets that stop you in your tracks, ocean swims before breakfast, barefoot days, and the rare chance to live closely with nature rather than just visit it 🌿 -

Ajuda
We're now looking for an individual or couple who is passionate about regenerative gardening, permaculture and sustainable living to become part of our family for a while.
Our main focus is developing our 5,000m² property into a productive, resilient and beautiful space. We'd especially love to welcome volunteers with practical experience who enjoy sharing knowledge while working alongside us.
Projects we're currently working on include:
- Vegetable gardens and edible landscaping
- Food forests and tropical planting
- Compost systems, worm farms and improving soil health
- Mulching and natural fertilisation
- Rainwater harvesting and water storage
- Building a water reservoir within our small stream
- Designing simple irrigation and water distribution systems
- Ecological landscaping and land regeneration
- Chickens and integrated garden systems
- Sustainable DIY projects using locally available materials
One of our longer-term dreams is to renovate the front of our property into a welcoming volunteer space, including a large water storage area, outdoor shower and toilet facilities, and a beautiful garden where future volunteers can even camp if they wish. If you have experience with ecological water systems, off-grid infrastructure or landscape design, your ideas would be incredibly valuable.
Although this is primarily a gardening role, we hope you'll also enjoy becoming part of our family life. Our son Alfie finishes school around midday, so we'd love someone who is happy to occasionally play with him while we're busy outside. This isn't a childcare position, just someone who enjoys children and doesn't mind family life happening around them.
We also love sharing meals together, so we're looking for volunteers who are confident, adaptable cooks and happy preparing healthy food using local ingredients.
English is essential, as our family speaks both English and Indonesian. Volunteers should also be comfortable living simply on a tropical island and confident riding a scooter.
We're ideally looking for a minimum stay of two months so there's time to build momentum with the projects and get to know each other properly. We always arrange a video call beforehand to make sure we're a good fit.
This position is especially suited to people with genuine hands-on experience in permaculture, regenerative agriculture, market gardening, water management, ecological landscaping or related fields. While enthusiasm is always welcome, we're specifically hoping to learn from volunteers who already have practical experience and are excited to share that knowledge while creating something lasting together. -

Acomodação
We offer a simple double room with a fan and private bathroom in town with access to a kitchen. This accommodation is different to our family home. We offer a scooter to use for the duration of your stay.
We provide supplies for meals cooked for our family and volunteers (one meal per volunteering day). -
Algo mais...
During your time off, you’ll have space to explore and experience island life at your own rhythm.
We have kayaks that volunteers are welcome to use. The guesthouse sits in a quiet bay with a live coral reef just offshore, a white sand beach within walking distance, and the National Park’s turtle sanctuary nearby (seasonal releases usually happen in the afternoon).
Living with us in Karimunjawa also offers something less visible but equally valuable:
A firsthand experience of what it is like to live on a remote island, run an off-grid hospitality business, and actively contribute to a local educational charity, all while raising a family. You’ll see the behind-the-scenes reality, the beauty, the challenges, the adaptability required, and the creativity it takes to build something meaningful in a small island community.
For those interested in entrepreneurship, eco-tourism, community development, education or conscious business, this can be an eye-opening and inspiring learning experience.
The island itself is best known for:
- Island-hopping boat trips to surrounding uninhabited islands
- Snorkelling and diving in protected marine areas
- Mangrove trekking
- Beach hopping and sunset viewpoints
- Camping on remote islands and beaches
- Exploring small local warungs and village life
Transport here is primarily by scooter, and volunteers must feel confident driving one. Everything is relatively close and the pace of life is slow.
Life here is simple and nature-focused. Evenings are often quiet, with beautiful sunsets, star-filled skies or moon rises. If you are seeking nightlife and constant stimulation, island life may feel too slow. But if you’re curious about intentional living, meaningful work, and being part of something growing, this can be a rare and enriching chapter. -

Pucci (1 ano)
Adopted from the children's grandma's house, this kitten is fearless and sleeps anywhere in any way!
Willy (4 anos)
Willy went exploring one day and stumbled upon Frankie (our other dog), and decided he'd like to stay! After some time, my friend and I (it was her dog), agreed that he could stay, and he's been a lovely addition to the family ever since. And boy can he run!!
