My husband and I live in rural France with farming all around. We have lived here for almost 5 years bringing with us all the 2 horses and 3 ponies, one of the ponies sadly passed away last year. We also have 2 very friendly dogs, a Border Collie and the a Miniature American Shepherd and four cats. Oh and I must not forget Fred the goldfish.
I run my own Gite business in France and my husband has his own business in England so is away a lot of the time, having alternate weeks at home.
You would have your own bedroom and bathroom facilities but I would like someone who is willing to help around the yard with the horses and not want to shut themselves away or spend all their time on their phones.
Our first language is English but do speak French but not fluently. We live 10kms from a small town with amenities such as cinema, swimming pool, supermarket, shops, banks, pharmacy.
As I am a very outdoors person then this will only suit someone who also enjoy the great outdoors, to riding and also carriage driving. If you’ve never tried I’m willing to show you how with my lovely sweet and naughty Welsh A pony.
I would like someone who is willing to help in every aspect, including housework, cooking meals and shopping.

You would benefit from assisting with the horses and ponies and living in the beautiful French countryside.You should be a horse loving person with a good background in general equine care, also a good basic riding ability is needed.
In short this is a great opportunity for a person who wants to either Improve their equine knowledge in a new country. Fast internet and TV is also provided but we would prefer a person who likes to be outdoors.

I had the best time at Toni’s place ! She made me feel comfortable pretty fast and was always making sure that everything was ok for me.

During my stay, I had my own bedroom and bathroom. Sometimes, I shared my bed with one of the cats (I’m definitely missing Maui’s cuteness ❤️). There was always plenty of delicious food and Toni is a great cook… read more (ask for Mac and cheese and her special chicken for a special treat).
Her place is lovely : she has great taste and her house feels very cosy. I spent quite a few hours reading in the living room with her cats and dogs napping all around me. Her house is in the countryside and it was so nice to hear birds singing all day long instead of cars and trucks ! Everything was quiet and gorgeous : being there felt like a privilege.

As for the work (even though it definitely didn’t feel like working ) : we would do the horses in the morning and in the evening (feed them, fill up the water buckets, muck out). Feeding the cats, dogs and chickens were also daily tasks. Then, depending on the day, there were other jobs : some painting, some very light building (We put up the new chicken house), ironing, cooking, shopping, cleaning,... I liked the fact that she would trust me to perform some tasks on my own.

I learned so many things with Toni : not a day went by without me learning new skills or facts ! She took the time to teach me how to lunge horses and carriage drive. We went carriage driving quite often with Snowdrop, her white pony (or green, or brown, depending on the day). She explained to me a lot of things about horses (diseases, Food supplements, riding techniques,,...). She also taught me how to handle a drill, how to make jam,...

When it was too hot to do anything, or when we were feeling a bit lazy, we stayed in and chilled in front of Netflix or just had a chat with a cup of tea. Toni involved me in her daily life and I was always welcome to go wherever she was going (or stay at home, if I didn’t feel like going out). She took me a few times to her friends : all of them are lovely and very warm people (bonus : they all are great bakers ; tea time is a very serious and delicious business).

I stayed with Toni for a month and I would have stayed longer if I could. She’s a lovely woman, so kind and generous ! I couldn’t have wished for a better experience. I’m so grateful for my time at her place : I’ve been a happy bunny all along. I miss Toni and all her animals dearly.

Hannah was such a joy to have as a workaway and she really helped with exercising the horses. Hannah took to carriage driving really well and I felt she learned quickly how to put the harness on and to drive the pony out by herself.
I hope Hannah will return in the future

Absolutely great to have Ilse here to attend to the horses and exercise as required. She also helped out with our rows and rows of strawberries and gave me some hints on what needs to be done. thanks Ilse and I hope that she returns. I have had the most wonderful time at Toni and Chris's place in rural Normandy. It was my first workaway experience and I couldn't have wished for a better start.
