    Descrição

Hi! We are a family of four – Matej, Greta and our two children, Izabel and Nikolaj.

We are an open-minded and friendly family who enjoy spending time outdoors, meeting new people and learning about different cultures. We speak Slovenian, English, Italian and Serbo-Croatian.

In December 2022, we moved to Dolenja Trebuša, a small village in western Slovenia. We renovated an old house and decided to start a new chapter of our lives, closer to nature and away from the busy everyday life.

We live on a property of about 3 hectares, with meadows, forest, two natural water sources and two small streams. Our house is surrounded by hills and trees, and our nearest neighbour is about 200 metres away. It is a quiet place with plenty of space, fresh air and beautiful nature.

There is always something to do around the house and on the land. We have already made some terraces for growing vegetables and herbs, but we still have many ideas and projects waiting for us.

We would like to develop a larger herb garden, grow more of our own food and gradually make our property more self-sufficient. We are also interested in permaculture, natural building and finding practical ways to work with the land rather than against it.

In the future, we would love to renovate our old hayrack, create a space for workshops, set up a yurt and perhaps build a small wooden sauna near the stream. These are still plans, and we know they will take time.

We would be especially happy to meet people who have experience in gardening, permaculture, woodworking, eco-building or landscape design. We are always interested in new ideas and different ways of doing things. But you don't need any special skills to stay with us. Being willing to help, learn and share your experiences is enough.

We mostly eat vegetarian food and enjoy cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients. We like trying new recipes and would love to discover some dishes from your home country too.

For us, Workaway is not just about getting help with our projects. We enjoy having people around, sharing meals, talking about life and getting to know each other. We also understand that everyone needs some time and space for themselves.

We have had some really nice experiences with Workawayers in the past and have made friendships that we truly appreciate.

If you enjoy nature, don't mind getting your hands dirty and would like to experience everyday life with a Slovenian family, you are very welcome to contact us.

Come as a guest, become part of our story and leave as a friend.

We look forward to meeting you!

    Greta, Matej, Izabel & Nikolaj

The place where we live is steeped in ancient stories, whispering through the hills, rivers, and forests that surround us. Not far from here, many believe that the melody of the world’s oldest known flute—crafted by a Neanderthal from an animal bone and discovered in one of our caves—was heard for the first time, echoing through time to remind us of our deep-rooted connection to music, nature, and human creativity.

The surrounding countryside carries the weight of history, shaped by the footsteps of foreign conquerors, the resilience of local people, and the echoes of battles that once raged through these now peaceful valleys. Yet, alongside this past, life here has always been rich with traditions, customs, and a deep sense of community. Our culture is woven together through centuries-old rituals, vibrant folk dances, heartfelt singing, and the flavors of exceptional local cuisine—each element telling its own tale of the land and its people.

We cherish meaningful exchanges and look forward to sharing stories, perspectives, and deep conversations with you. Your thoughts and experiences will enrich our world, just as we hope ours will inspire you.

    Ajuda

We have already renovated our house, but there is still plenty to do around our property. We have about 3 hectares of land, including meadows and forest, and we are slowly working on making better use of the space.

The kind of help we need depends on the season, the weather and the projects we are working on.

Gardening and growing our own food
We have started creating terraces for growing vegetables and herbs, and we would like to develop them further. We are also planning a larger garden with medicinal and aromatic plants.
    You could help us with:
    Preparing garden terraces.
Planting, watering, weeding and harvesting vegetables, berries and herbs.
Preparing compost, mulching and improving the soil.
Collecting leaves, branches and other natural materials for composting.

Planning and developing our herb garden.
We are interested in permaculture and organic gardening, so if you have some experience in these areas, we would be very happy to learn from you.

Outdoor projects and working with wood
There are always things to repair, build or improve around our property.
Some of the things we could use help with are:
Maintaining paths, terraces and outdoor areas.
Small DIY projects and simple wooden structures.

Landscaping and making better use of the space around our home.
Collecting and stacking firewood for winter.
General maintenance around the garden and property.
We also have some bigger plans for the future, including renovating our old hayrack, setting up a yurt and creating a small outdoor sauna.
If you have experience in woodworking, eco-building, architecture or landscape design, we would love to exchange ideas with you. We are still figuring out how to organise the different areas of our property, so practical suggestions would be very welcome.

    Herbs and food preservation
Greta is especially interested in medicinal and aromatic plants, traditional herbal knowledge and making natural products.
Depending on the season, we can spend time together:
    Harvesting and drying herbs.
Collecting wild plants and learning about their traditional uses.
    Preserving fruits and vegetables.
Making homemade jams, fermented vegetables and other foods.
Learning about lavender distillation and how hydrosols and essential oils are made.
We also enjoy experimenting with natural ingredients and sharing knowledge about traditional ways of using plants.

    Family life and cooking
We enjoy cooking and sharing meals together. We mostly eat vegetarian food, and we always appreciate discovering new recipes from other countries.
You are welcome to join us in preparing meals and helping with the usual everyday tasks that come with sharing a home.
We have two children, Izabel and Nikolaj. They enjoy meeting people from other countries, and we would be happy if you spent some time with them, practising English, playing games or sharing your interests. This is more about cultural exchange than babysitting.

    Sharing knowledge and ideas
We would especially love to meet people with an interest in permaculture, gardening, sustainable living, natural building or landscape design.
One of our long-term goals is to develop our property into a place where we can grow more of our own food, work with herbs and create spaces for workshops and relaxation.
We don't expect anyone to know everything or to work on all these projects. Some people enjoy gardening, others are good with tools, cooking or coming up with creative ideas.

We are happy to find tasks that suit your interests and abilities. We appreciate people who are responsible, willing to help and comfortable taking some initiative.

    Acomodação

We can host a maximum of 2 adults on our property.

We offer accommodation in a trailer with two beds and direct access to a traditional hayrack, where guests can use the outdoor summer kitchen. Additionally, our entire house, including the bathroom and indoor kitchen, is available for shared use.
For those who prefer a different setup, you are also welcome to camp with us or come with a motorhome. As we are in a rural area, it is desirable that you have your own transport. The nearest grocery store is 6 km away, the closest petrol station is 13 km away, and larger shopping centers can be found 19 km away in Tolmin.
To help you explore the surroundings, we offer two bicycles for rent. You can use them to visit nearby natural attractions or take a scenic ride to the train station (about 1 hour). From there, you can continue your journey by train towards Bled, which takes approximately 45 minutes.

For dining options, there are two inns in the village—one is open all the time, while the other operates only on weekends.

  • Algo mais...

    Algo mais...

You will never be bored during your free time with us, as nature itself offers endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation. We live just a few steps away from the crystal-clear Trebuščica River, a refreshing retreat on hot summer days. Whether you want to cool off in its gentle currents or simply unwind by its banks, the river is a constant source of peace and rejuvenation.

For those seeking more solitude, Trebuščica hides countless secret corners in its upper reaches, where nature remains untouched and serene. The river’s tributaries are magical destinations in themselves—natural pools and cascading waterfalls create a fairy-tale atmosphere, inviting you to immerse yourself in their beauty.

If you love discovering unique landscapes, Trebuša and its surroundings are full of breathtaking sights, each with its own story to tell. You can easily find more about them online, but here are just a few must-see places:

Pršjak Waterfall – a mesmerizing cascade flowing into emerald pools.
Gačnik Gorge & Makčeva Grapa – wild, mysterious canyons carved by time.
Sulfur Springs – mineral-rich waters with a distinctive scent and healing properties.
White Waters & Podkobiljski Bridge – stunning natural formations perfect for a peaceful escape.
A short drive will take you even further into the wonders of the region, including:

Divje Babe – home to the world’s oldest known flute, a testament to ancient creativity.
Cerkno & Idrija – rich in history, famous for mercury mining and lace-making traditions.
Kolovrat & Tolmin – where breathtaking panoramic views and WWI history intertwine.
Baška Grapa, Šentviška Plateau, Kobarid, Bovec, Trenta... each offering a unique blend of pristine nature, fascinating heritage, and warm, welcoming locals.
The beauty of the landscapes, the richness of history, and the kindness of the people who call this place home will surely enchant you and make you want to return again and again.

And if you don’t have your own transport, don’t worry—we are happy to explore together on the weekends and take you to some of these unforgettable places.

    🌿 Welcome! 🌿
