Looking for a Canadian wilderness adventure?

We have an opening to help with firewood, housekeeping and various projects at the resort asap. Our resort is on the shores of pristine Quesnel Lake in BC and we need HELP for the season!. We are off-grid in the backcountry of BC and have 5 cabins, 50 RV sites, a Cafe with a coffee bar and a 35 slip marina.
If you like to spend some time in a wilderness setting away from city life and the main stream of tourism and enjoy a variety of work, from dealing with guests, landscaping, boats, painting, carpentry work, to chopping firewood and much more, you will love it. A person with diversified skills and stamina would be our preference. No princess please. Our resort is in the Cariboo Region of British Columbia, near William's Lake.
We supply room and board; including health conscious European cooking. In your time off you can go fishing, swim, hike, mountain bike or simply relax our our sandy beach. The resort opens May and closes for the winter in October . Spring clean up work starts about 3 weeks before opening and various ongoing renovations and maintenance jobs throughout the summer need to be done... Our guests call the resort "little paradise"... want to check it out? If you are ready for BC's great outdoors, get in touch..

The closest city is Williams Lake, where we will pick you up at the airport or the bus. We offer accommodation and fair minimum wage .

Love for the outdoors will make this work opportunity a great experience. You can use one of our boats to explore the lake, go fishing, hiking, mountain biking, mushroom and berry picking, swimming in the pristine clean water, beach combing and all sorts of water sports, interaction with our international guests. We are off the grid and use generator power. Far from the noise of city life, Quesnel Lake is peaceful and picturesque.

What an amazing place!!! Directly at the Lakefront!!! My second work-away turned out just as well as my first - different setting, different routine (aka no routine - just take every day as it comes) - I loved it! And learned a lot.

Marita and Kyle are grat and very generous people, they have travelled the world and have so many stories to… read more share, and Kyle´s sense of humour is as extraordinary as Marita´s cooking abilities.
(I had to cut myself down to 2 meals a day at some point... even talking them into being allowed to do some more hard physical work like cutting branches, getting firewood to places, chainsawing, running to my daily tasks instead of walking, cleaning all of the windows at their house and everywhere else) could not stop my clothes from getting smaller - LoL.

The month of May:

Your job is to help to get a big RV and Camping Resort with seasonal campers and other campsites "out of hybernation". That means: Blowing away leaves, raking leaves out of ditches, cutting branches, cleaning the 5 cabins and all the rooms you will occupy later as well (the kitchen/cafe, the bathrooms), put the little Marina together, clean the chicken house, make all the tentsites look nice, take away greenery with the quad and trailer, the biggest cleaning operation I have ever been part of. The weather gets better and better every day, you can learn so many new skills.
As far as the daily routine goes: Check on the Chicken and the eggs, clean the house when its dirty, feed them, water the flowers every morning, clean the cabins after guests have been there, help Marita in the kitchen (just like you would at home), go shopping every week to Williams Lake and helf with the groceries. Empty trash bins when they are full... just every day stuff like in every household.

"If you want to" tasks: Answer the phone, talk to the campers, help with bills, reservations, solve problems, repair things if you can or help with it, help Kyle and Greg with the men´s stuff (there is heaps of it!!!), learn to operate the boat, chainsaw, turn on or off the Generator after being instructed - if you do well, they will let you "run free". Your day is very flexible.

Only absolute day-routine: At 8 am the generator is turned on, at 10pm it is shut down. That is what "living off the grid" means. Only propane operated stuff (and the wood-stove / har har) work - all electricity is gone, including that for the Internet router. And the light in the shower - so remember to take one before 9:30pm ^-^
The Internet works fine at the cafe, but please be aware that costs for data/GB in Canada are hilariously high compared to Europe or South America - shut your phone off so it does not do routine update stuff, and your Laptop as well. (I did that in all of my work away places - update your stuff at Starbucks or Tim Hortens!)

There is no fixed schedule - it is as Max describes it in his review - every day is a new day, you come together at meal times and discuss what`s to do - show initiative, be a part of it all - and you will have a superb time.

I can recommend this place for a couple as well as for individuals with a sense of humor who don´t need constant entertainment / or two friends - one can help Kyle, one Marita and in the evening you enjoy your time together, watch the most amazing sunsets! You can live in a Cabin, a Camper, or try out your own camping vehicles. You could even come here and work on building your interior for a camper van. All the tools are here, if you treat them well (and have insurance) - you can very well ask Kyle if you can use them. I tried out camping in my car during the last weeks and managed to put everything together for my roadtrip up to Yukon and Alaska.

What you do not get: is a city nearby with a Cinema, a Bar, Theater etc. Plus no "Tourist Attractions" - this place is remote guys, but thats what makes it so special.

The Advantage: Take a break from being a Tourist, driving around and doing what "is recommended" in your Lonely Planets or bla bla Blogs - come out here and do SOMETHING ELSE. Live at an RV Resort, meet the seasonal people - all real Canadians! Make some friends for further travels after you leave here, get job ideas, ideas about life, get some live-hacks from Marita and Kyle (or Greg - he got some ideas too, plus a sense of humor so sublte and so dry that you need a minute or two sometimes until you burst out laughing).

Thanks Marita and Kyle for taking me in, with all my craziness and all the stuff I did in the in-betweens, had a pretty rough time at home with a lot of chaos - constantly on the phone I sometimes thought... I will miss you very much - we`ll stay in contact and I´ll either see you in New Zealand one Winter or here at Quesnel Lake next Summer, in one of the busier months like July or August when all of these Canadian Kids have their school holidays and the place is buzzing with people, bonfires, and cans of beer ^-^
