Descrição
Hello we are a family from the Canary Islands, on the smallest of the archipielago, called El Hierro. It´s a beautiful island declared a biosphere reserve with 10.000 inhabitants, it´s very relaxed and different from the rest.
We live in the village of El Pinar, it´s small with 1,500 people, close to the mountains and 15 minutes by car to the sea.
In the island you can practice all kinds of sports, adventures, swimming, diving, mountain biking, underwater fishing, paragliding…
We love to meet new people and usually do an interchange, and we can offer a little apartment of 30 square metres which is next door to our house.
The apartment has a bathroom, kitchen, wifi, television and all the basics to be comfortable

We are a family that we have had many exchanges and that to date all the comments are good, surely they enjoy our hospitality and the conditions are very good.

We are looking for someone who knows building maintenance because we want to paint the house, chop firewood, fix walls ... Also who has knowledge in the garden to be able to supply ourselves with it. Also, it is important to us that you always speak with us when we meet socially etc.

We will give you our one bed apartment that is beside our house. It is small but has everything you need, bathroom, kitchen and lots of closet space.Also there is wifi and TV. It will be your own apartment. It is important to us that you understand we are not looking for a nanny and our homes will be seperate.

El Hierro is a very small island and most people here do not speak English, or German so having some Spanish is desirable but not essential. Having a car is also better as buses are limited, but we can give you a bicycle and most people hitchhike here as it is very safe. There is no crime in El Hierro. We are looking for someone...

I’ve just finished 6-weeks staying with Francisco, Tere, Eva and Silvia and I feel like I’ve said goodbye (or rather “Hasta luego”) to new friends. I was already looking forward to the stay, having read previous feedback comments from other ‘WorkAwayers’, but my experience far exceeded my expectations. The island of El Hierro is beautiful, the… read more village of El Pinar is quaint, charming, friendly and welcoming and the apartment I stayed in, although compact, is very cleverly designed and suited me perfectly. It is right next door to the family’s home, so you see each other daily, but you live independently, catering for yourself.

Francisco and Tere are very helpful, relaxed and caring hosts and were a pleasure to meet and get to know. Eva and Silvia (17 & 15...almost!) are lively, highly-intelligent teenagers, who cram a lot into their lives, take their studies seriously, but also have a balanced view of what matters most in life. They both value happiness, respect for others and living lives of meaning and purpose, which means that they are interesting and stimulating young people to spend time with.

I spent an hour with each of the girls separately on two evenings a week, sometimes helping with homework, sometimes preparing sessions and activities to practice language skills. Both girls attend extra language classes twice a week after school (Eva takes English and Silvia German) and their level of spoken English is good. It is these languages (English and German) that they want support with respectively. The sessions are largely up to you to plan and prepare (when there is no specific homework to help with), so if you’re the kind of person who has creative ideas for interesting activities then this is the kind of help the girls would really appreciate and enjoy.

When I wasn’t working with the girls I took care of the family’s small vegetable garden and/or kept the outside area swept clean (a couple of hours a day). I was invited to take any vegetables I wanted, to look after the garden in the way that I chose, and Francisco provided plants, compost and anything else needed.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to live independently, enjoys your own company, loves nature, gets on well with friendly local people and teenagers and doesn’t need too much ‘night-life’ then this truly has the potential to be a paradise placement for you, as it turned out to be for me.

I will always remember my time in this beautiful place with this lovely family :-)
