Francis spent about a month with us. He's a very pleasant person to live with, always ready to help, whether with renovation work or everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning. In particular, he helped to renovate a bedroom by installing plasterboard and a velux window. He also did a bit of gardening and helped us consolidate a small wall in the

I spent about 10 days at Sylvie and Athel's house, helping with renovation of their house, along with 2 other workawayers and it's been such a great decision to go there. That was exactly what I needed! A
… read more warm, friendly & welcoming family willing to share their knowledge about various things: from rendering and building, to carpentry, from the design of stairs (2g + h if I remember correctly) to how was first recorded music in the old days, or from land surveying to music in Malawi.. and willing to spend some time with us, talking, sharing fun stories, going to a light performance, playing board games, laughing, cooking, laughing while cooking...! I'll always remember making gnocchis with Sophie, what an interesting and atypical way of doing :D
Sophie is wonderful host and cook, very fun to be with and also soooo talented at acting/role playing (so as Marceau!)!
On the renovation site, Athel was so kind and patient with us, he took time explaining so that we can understand and (try to) do things the right way. He gave us the basics, such as securing the working site, always cleaning afterwards... He's an amazing source of information about so many different (and sometimes random :) topics, and always has a surprising ancient object up his sleeve to show us: their house is like a treasure chest with hidden gems going along stories. I learnt a lot from him, he's a really good teacher and he's very skilled at everything he does.
It was too short, I would stayed longer because I really enjoyed helping there, I learnt a lot and felt really good in their beautiful house, getting to know them, Sophie, Athel, Louis and Marceau (unfortunately I couldn't meet Mathias!)
You better help hard otherwise you'll gain weight from all the fantastic meals and pastries Sophie makes! :D

Laurie spent a week with us, along with a couple of other work-awayers, helping to renovate part of our house. She is a hard worker and a very pleasant person to work with, always keen to learn new techniques and how to use new tools.
After work or at weekends she would always motivate the group to go for a walk, visit an exhibition or stay in and

Laurie also helped us a lot with meal preparation, sharing her delicious recipes and her many stories. She's very funny and dynamic.
We wish Laurie all the best for the future and we wish her many wonderful encounters.

It was a real pleasure to host Ashley, Eva, and their two dogs Midnight and Lefty.
Ashley and Eva are very hard and tireless workers. During the day, they helped Athel with the renovation of our house, mainly by putting new wooden beams and pointing the wall stones. Ashley is very skilled and adept at renovation work, and Eva was always keen to
… read more learn and help where needed.
In the evenings, Eva would come over to help with the cooking and share recipes for delicious meals. She managed to get my youngest son to eat vegetables without complaining, which was no easy task. And after dinner, we would often get together and play games, as Ashley is a big fan of games.
Midnight and Lefty are lovely dogs and we really appreciated Ashley and Eva's flexibility regarding our preference for dogs to stay on the ground floor of the house rather than in the living room.
We spent almost a month with Ashley and Eva, and we really felt like they were part of the family.
I hope our paths will cross again some day.

We have done many workaways over the last two years, but our time at Sylvie and Athel's place was, without question, our best experience. Sylvie is a fantastic cook and all around excellent host. We spent a lot of time at the table just talking and joking and improving our French and English language skills. She loves board games, as does her
… read more youngest son Marceau. Sylvie was always very helpful whenever we needed anything. Athel is also a wonderful host although in a very different way. A master craftsman, we learned all sorts of woodworking and masonry skills working with him on the house. He is also an eclectic collector of ancient devices. The house is full of interesting artifacts, mostly in working condition, going back centuries. A quick walkthrough of the house is equivalent to going to an ancient tech museum. Their older sons are mostly away at boarding school these days, so we didn't have too much contact with them. But we thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with Marceau, who is a fun and smart guy who enjoyed hanging out with us. … read more I tried to help as much as possible in repairing the second house, the boys are very funny, even without understanding French (Now I speak French) I laughed a lot at each dinner how the atmosphere was great, get ready because Marceau will make you laugh like you hadn't done in a long time, the place is beautiful in the countryside, they have fruit orchards, the place is very cozy, you can make music, exchange travel experiences They are a family that has lived in many countries, and they are always helping those who need it, thank you very much for everything, I am indebted to you.
It is impossible to forget the morning coffee,
Every amazing meal Sylvie and Athel prepares
a good wine on the table every evening
In summer they go to the beach and surf

… read more always visiting from all around the world. I was always included in any activities, including the fantastic concert/party which we threw at the end of my stay. The amount of work expected each day was always extremely reasonable and Sylvie was always happy to help me explore some of the region if I wanted. I got plenty of French practice too! Sylvie, Athel, Mathias, Louis and Marceau are 5 amazing individuals who make an incredible family - I hope to see them all again soon. Cian was the first workawayer we hosted, and he became very quickly part of the family. He stayed with us for about a month, helped out with some little renovation works in the house, and was mainly taking care of our three children. He was very patient when teaching them english, playing games, or giving some piano lessons to the little one. Our
… read more children enjoyed having a "big borther" at home, and they already miss him a lot !
During his stay, we organised a party at home with some live music. Cian spent several hours rehearsing with us, and his talent with piano certainly contributed a lot to the success of our little "concert". His daily piano pieces also brought some extra joy and peacefulness in the house.
Cian is a very easy person to get on with, and a very pleasant person to live with, always ready to help. We really enjoyed the time we spent with him and we hope to see him again very soon !

We hosted Ana, Maciek and their lovely family for two weeks: one week in our holiday house on the seaside, and one week in our main house in the countryside. They usually spent the mornings in helping out with small renovation works and cleaning, and enjoyed visiting the surroundings during afternoons and weekends.

… read more experience for them as well as for us, so there might have been some frustrations from both sides from time to time, that could probably have been avoided by a better communication about each other's expectations at the beginning of the stay. However, the experience was great. We shared a lot, and learned each other from our very different lifestyles and habits, and the children enjoyed playing with each other, despite the language barrier.
