What about Mackay ? Mackay is a normal-sized town with everything you need to enjoy it ! Supermarkets for some non vegan sweetness, a mall for some Kmart useless stuff, a cinema to enjoy half-price movies every Tuesdays, a library to enjoy AC and wifi, a boardgame bar (DeckADice) to enjoy free boardgame nights and, last but not least, a squash club where you pay only nothing per week and you have access to unlimited squash, gym and a small pool ( they give free lessons for women, wonderful eh ?) !

… read more workawayers have commented that some of the best experiences in nature have taken place in Mackay: visiting kangaroos at sunrise at Cape Hillsborough, picnic lunches at our local waterfall.
I also make a huge effort to make everyone feel comfortable. I also connect people with the local arts and culture scene which is vibrant.
So here I am chosing to focus on the positives that a stay in Mackay brings. I have no control over many issues that have been raised in this review.
For fellow hosts: I cannot recommend these workawayers as they gave no notice of their decision. If they had raised their concerns I would have accommodated their request to leave.
We don’t really know where to start.
Maybe by saying Alison was super friendly and seems to be a lovely person, she picked us up from the train station when we arrived which was around 9.30pm. The hospitality we received was also great. Alison had made us soup for tea which was very thoughtful. Coco the dog was also very sweet.
However, our
… read more initial 10 night work away turned into 2 pretty quickly. We left early one morning with no discussion with Alison. Which, when we replied to her message, we apologised for and explained that we just did not feel comfortable at all. Workaways’ advice is to listen to your gut feeling and get out if this is the case.
When we were shown the studio to where we’d be staying, we were grateful, 10 days is a long time and a lot of money saved on accommodation. A bed is a bed at the end of the day and we didn’t need much. However, the studio that was shown in the pictures had completely changed. It was spacious as described. The bed was multiple mattresses stacked on wooden pallets. The bedding was more sheets and blankets. There were nets across the windows but no way of shutting the windows so noises were loud on a night from possums etc and no way of regulating temperature in the studio e.g heating or air con. When we arrived, we were told about ‘workers’ staying in accommodation close by and that we’d be sharing the bathroom facilities with them. We weren’t aware of this before. Due to this, we were told we can shower before 5pm as the workers are back around 6pm. We don’t mind sharing but the timing part was quite restricting for us. Especially because we like to exercise in the evenings when it’s cooler.
When we were out for the day, we received a message from Alison saying she’d left some lunch in the studio. We fully appreciate the intentions were good. However, we do believe that permission should be sought as all of our belongings were there and we were not.
The first day Alison said we can have off as she hadn’t finished her notes for the work we’d be doing over the course of our stay. We took this opportunity to explore the centre of Mackay and surrounding areas. The bikes were very useful.
The problem wasn’t just the false pictures of the studio but the false portrayal of Mackay. We booked based on the profile as it just sounded perfect and ‘less well known to tourists’ was accurate- we figured there was a reason for this.
There was some small drama at the train station, Alison had apologised and said that that is out of character for Mackay. Later in our stay we quickly figured out that it was actually an accurate representation of the area. We had people shout from cars at us while biking a couple of times. We had to find last minute accommodation for a night to wait for a train which was arriving at 3am in the morning. We ordered pizza and it was at this point the driver unfortunately told us about the shooting that had just happened. This was followed by a comment by him, ‘you get used to it’.
We were located a 5 minute walk from this. Police advised to stay indoors until they located the shooter, so that is how we spent our time.
This was our first workaway opportunity and honestly we’ve just been a little shocked. We bought train tickets from cairns to Mackay and skipped great backpacking places.
We are frustrated at how far we’ve travelled and we are currently writing this review at Airlie Beach which is a completely different vibe. We saw no other backpackers in Mackay but we’ve seen loads here already. Only been here a couple of hours.
From our first workaway we’ve learnt that an agreement of what kind of work we’d be doing needs to be agreed upfront as to this day, we still have no idea of what we’d have been doing or if there was even any work to be done- we had a vibe that there wasn’t much to do.
I know Alison will be upset with this review as she asked us not to review at all but we had to ignore this. If we’d have seen a review like this it would have saved us time and in the long run, we are just out of pocket with having to relocate. Some backpackers are travelling solo and we’d hate for them to be in the same position on their own. We’ve spent 3 days just feeling uncomfortable and at points, scared.
I’d like to emphasise that Mackay is NOT a place for backpackers. Yes there was a nice sunrise, yes it’s quiet, yes there’s places to walk. But you can find this anywhere!

In terms of help, I spent most of my time in the garden cleaning, weeding, watering, and general maintenance. I also helped clean one of Alison's rentals, moved a fridge, and sanded floors. Because there are lots of different projects to be done, Alison made sure to suit the tasks to my preference and abilities, and was very flexible with the schedule. I planned to stay about 1 week or so and I ended up staying 3 weeks in total. It was absolutely amazing. The whole family is super nice. Alison has a great sense of humor and is always smiling and is extremely interested to learn new things. Jade is a really open and funny person, it’s nice to be around her! She let me do the things I was good at and enjoyed, which allowed me to get creative while helping her. She also is a excellent vegan, it’s so much fun to try new things and learn recipes to upgrade my diet. Overall I had the most amazing time staying with them, I learned and met wonderful people. I was very delighted that Elena taught me some German expressions and suffered with my very poor pronunciation.
She clearly is also a very patient person.
We had the opportunity of spending time with Elena on lots of travel adventures which was great fun. She is the adventurous type.
Elena has a great work ethic and is not addicted to her phone or technology. Actually I would say she is a very open minded person.
Elena is very proactive in her approach to work and picks up new skills quickly.
I also liked that she has a healthy lifestyle: she doesn't smoke and drinks moderately.
I highly recommend Elena and I know that she will try her best in any opportunity made available to her. She is a very competent person in many ways and is a great asset to have as a workaway guest.

… read more she is an easy going person. Corbin is able to easily engage in conversations with different types of people and she is very pleasant company. It was very interesting to speak to Corbin about nutrition as she has expertise in this area.
Corbin was very open minded in her approach to workaway. We offered her work that she had not previously done and she was very willing to learn new skills. She did a marvellous job in all the work that she did. Corbin did an amazing reno transformation in my bathroom with her painting skills.
We had the opportunity of spending time with Corbin on lots of travel adventures which was great fun. She is the adventurous type.

I also liked that she was very patient and kind with my dog who is consistently badly behaved. I would highly recommend her for work with dogs as she is so great with them.

I totally forgot to write a feedback for my stay with this absolutely amazing family which is probably due to the fact that it felt more like being with friends than “working”.
I was welcomed right from the beginning by Jade and her lovely mother Alison. I also met Talia, she is lovely too as well as Nate, the father.

… read more has been more than amazing. First of all: the food was absolutely delicious, Alison is such a good cook and her baking skills are outstanding as well. So if I can say one thing for sure: You will definitely enjoy the food even if you are not vegan. We cooked with banana leaves, we had lasagne, homemade bread and pizza, chocolate muffins, waffles and whatever else you can imagine.
The tasks were good too, I had a lot of freedom to choose whichever tasks suit my skills best and Alison and Nate were always there to answer questions.
I spent most of my time with Jade, Alison and Nate which was an absolute bless. Nate shows a lot of interest in other people’s lives and cultures and is very happy to tell you about the Turkish culture or bee keeping. Alison made a huge effort to make me feel welcome (as did all the other people in the family) and she took me to all the places to see in Mackay, making sure I get enough free time to explore the area. Talia was really kind too and took us out for ice cream while she was there. Last but not least, Jade has become one of my dearest friends in such a short time and I can’t wait to see her again. She is an amazing musician. For that reason alone you should come to that work away.

The great thing about our time with Nate is how he focused on the cultural and skills exchange of the workaway programme. We were able to learn about all sorts of things ranging from paint prep (not the most exciting, but useful) to property development advice to, most importantly, learning lots about the wonderful bees and how to care for them!
… read more We also shared with Nate info on our plant-based diet - he was interested in learning about it from a nutritional point of view.
So, what to expect? Well, the current workaway description is a bit different to our experience- could be worth updating to reflect current circumstances (Though Alison warned us that would be the case when we contacted her). Nate spends a lot of time living at two properties away from the main family home in Mackay as there is lots of work to do so we spent time with him. We briefly met Alison and she was welcoming and friendly. Most help needed is in a property in Walkerston - great for people wanting to help or learn more about house renovation. We stayed in our campervan there as it is a building site at the moment. Basic needs are met - shelter, water and place to wash/cook. There is no internet or laundry. There is also a fair amount of work needed at the Seaforth property. Mainly outdoor work and beekeeping. There was a room we could stay in there but no internet. Bikes are available at the mackay property so as we weren’t working there we made a trip on our final day to Mackay and borrowed the bikes.
Nate took us on a pleasant bike ride, stopping off at a lovely community garden and botanic gardens. Nate isn’t vegan but was happy to eat vegan with us and we shared making yummy meals, sometimes he’d add fish on the side etc. He provided lots of lovely ingredients to cook with, some fresh from the garden! Yum. His family are vegan but we didn’t spend time much time with them. The advertised ‘sailing adventure’ Is maybe for long term stayers? I’m not sure, Nate goes out occasionally but is a busy man! We didn’t see much of Mackay but we really enjoyed Nate’s company and feel that we made a great friendship with him so that is more important to us than sight-seeing.
I would definitely recommend if you would like to learn new skills in some of the areas advertised. Plus Nate is just a genuine guy that is so giving and knowledgeable - interesting to share conversations with. We tried to learn some Dutch but this was not successful because we were not good at the accent. Anyway, we had a great time when Kas visited because he is a fun loving person with a great sense of humour. We referred Kas onto a friend in Brisbane and I understand he did a great job there too. … read more humidity and the heat in general. Jess however was a champion and she applied herself very successfully to the work that we offered. Often she did work that she had not previously done such as painting and gardening in the tropics.
Jess was very helpful to have around and she has neat and tidy habits and would do the dishes without being asked!!
Jess has a passion for fitness and health in general. She joined in our local netball team and excelled in this role, not sure how the team will cope next week without her and they might fail terribly without their little British Netball star! She mentored the players and created a really good vibe at the warm up sessions.
Jess is a very kind and compassionate person and quickly developed a close friendship with my daughter who is many years younger than Jess. Very quickly they were off to the local gym. This was an unprecedented experience for my daughter but I have no doubt will help her in the future. Jess I think has really sparked an interest in training for my daughter and I feel very grateful to Jess for this.
I also liked that Jess was very open minded and tried new foods when it was obvious our diet was very different to what she usually eats. Again, she had a great attitude here.
I wish Jess well with her future travels. I know wherever she goes she will be made welcome as she is such a great asset and a terrific ambassador for the workaway program.

… read more Lucas had a very positive attitude to work and was willing to give new tasks a go. Lucas was also willing to work outdoors in the cool of the afternoon. We enjoyed Lucas's company and it was nice to show him around Mackay, Cape Hillsborough and Newry and Shaw Island in the Southern group of the Whitsundays. Lucas really enjoyed swimming in the Lagoon in Mackay. Lucas fitted in well with us and was very appreciated of the meals we prepared, He is definitely an easy going person.
