I spent three weeks with Ruben and Leire. I had a great time there, helping with the garden and the sheep. Ruben and Leire were both very patient with my not very well spanish skills, making an effort to speak in a way that i could understand. Thanks to them my spanish improved a lot and very rapidly. There is a beach about half an hours walk away
… read more which was beautiful in winter, i am sure it is absolutely stunning in summer. Ruben and Leire also gave me directions for many other walks in the area.
The food was always really delicious and the work was never boring. They made me feel very welcome and at their place.

We spent a fantastic two weeks with Ruben and Leire. We wished we could stay longer. They are very nice and open - minded people. Our job was to help in the garden (Paula) and renovation works (Łukasz). We learned a lot about plants that are not found in our country. Leire is also a great cook, the food she served was delicious and fresh, based on
… read more vegetables from the garden. Thanks to Ruben and Leire we learned about Basque history and culture. They recommended great places and restaurants for us to visit. We stayed in Leire and Ruben's house during almost 4 weeks in October 2021, but as our subscription to workaway ended during our stay we couldn't write them a feedback until now (1 year later !).
It was a fully rewarding experience. They did not only learned us a lot and in different areas but they showed to be wise, kind, genereous and

During our stay we worked in the vegetable garden, we learned how to make the cement, we had a chance to use traditional machines to make the apple cider and finally we could tried how to be the shepherds. The work was interesting, variate and not too hard. In the afternoon we would always go to the beautiful Playa de Laga beach (10min by car/30min by walking) to surf and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Ibarrangelua. Even though our Spanish was really basic, Leire and Ruben always proved to be patient teachers and we even had a chance to learn some Basque ! :) When we had some misadventures during our stay there they took a really good care of us, like a family.
Last but not least, they surely influenced us by the way they see the life and that you can be truthfully happy with less.

Trabajar con Leire y Rubén fue un verdadero placer!! Son muy agradables y amables y siempre están dispuesto a ayudarte y enseñarte. Aprendí mucho con ellos y trabajamos mano a mano en cosas muy distintas.

We spent a couple weeks with Ruben and Leire, working on plastering inside the house, feeding the chickens in the morning and occasionally helping in the garden.
We really enjoyed the work there; Ruben is a very patient, knowledgeable and kind teacher. We definitely learnt a lot.

… read more with our private bathroom and kitchen, and a very comfy bed.
On a typical day, we would feed the chickens just before 9, work with Ruben until 12 when we would take a 30mins break. We would then resume until 15 and have lunch all together. Lunch was late but Leire’s cooking is worth the wait! Then we had the rest of the day free to chill out or go explore (there is a beautiful beach at walking distance). We would have dinner in the studio, cooking what Leire had provided for us (mostly organic vegetables from the garden).

We spent 3 weeks in Ibarrangelu in total, we enjoyed our first 2 weeks with Ruben and Liere so much that we ended up returning for another week later in the month.
For our first workaway we couldn’t of asked for more welcoming and warm people as Ruben and Liere.
Over the 3 weeks we helped plaster and paint the outside of the house, feed the
… read more chickens daily, mucked out the sheep’s barn, varnished the wooden beams in the garage and helped around the garden. We both really enjoyed working along side Ruben and Liere and learnt a lot about straw bail house cladding, real permaculture and the work needed to live sustainably.
Ibarrangelu is a beautiful part of the Basque Country and with Ruben and Lieres knowledge and the well structured workdays (3pm finishes), we were able to explore the area extensively. Ruben and Liere also involved us in local events which we wouldn’t of know about otherwise.
We were very comfortable staying in a renovated studio area of an 800 year old barn, with all cooking facilities provided. Daily lunches with our hosts never disappointed or left us hungry, their abundant seasonal salads and stews filling us to breaking point, and leftovers being kept by us for snacks or dinner.
If you’re looking to experience the Basque Country, a self-sustaining permaculture farm and aren’t afraid of hard work, we couldn’t recommend this workaway enough!Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

My experience at Leire and Ruben's house was really full of new skills !! In fact, I've made myself as a shepherd during two weeks (with some lambs), and I've learned a lot with Ruben about the construction of a straw bale wall (from A to Z).
About them, there are really kind and generous, they will do everything for you to feel comfortable.

They are tranquil people in a tranquil place, with very beautifull views and landscapes really different between them. A lot of great spots to visit!
Is a high recomended place to go if like this kind of things and you want to enjoy nature, a great ecological diet, a very interesting and entertaining kind of building and a natural lifestyle.
