I spent (unfortunately only) 11 days in February 2020 (just when the Covid pandemic was starting and there were the first cases in Italy) in Montelabate with Luisa, Gabriel, Teresa, Bianca, Flora, Celeste, a lot of their cats and the dog Pepi. It has probably been my best Workaway experience so far!
All the family was just so cordial, cheerful,
… read more warm and very "Italian" :D, with "porta aperta" (=very welcoming)! And that was exactly what I was looking for: a typical warm-hearted, hospitable and lively Italian family with a lot of children :-).
My work consisted of helping in the kitchen, playing with the girls, "rimuovere delle ragnatele" :D, work in the vegetable bed, cleaning the hen house and the garden house.
In the short time I experienced so much there - we went together to visit some friends who cooked the traditional mushroom risotto for us, went to a local "community market" with local products, went "alle terme" (to a hot spring) in Tuscany to celebrate Teresa's birthday (I didn't expect bathing in February!), celebrated in a restaurant with many friends and family. I helped with preparing and baking a huge amount of bread to sell in a real oven, we were singing with a guitar with friends who came to stay with us... I went on my own to visit Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia and for smaller walks near by.
I enjoyed the long late dinners and chatting around the table, all the simple food usually made from vegetables coming from the garden or from the local area, the home-made bread and cakes...
I improved my Italian a lot, as I was speaking only Italian with them.
The family leads a very simple but rich life tightly connected to the nature, far from the bustle of the outer world, with strong connections between each other and to their friends. I really enjoyed talking with Gabriel and Luisa about their philosophy of life and got inspirated a lot. The stay with them was just what I needed so much back in that time, thinking often how weird the world became in the last time...
At the end I didn't want to leave this peaceful place far away from the "normal" life and these great people, who I felt so good with. It was a bit shock to take the metro in Prague again...
As I already mentioned many times, it was a great experience, very important for me, and I really hope to visit these people again!Fotos
