I spent 5 weeks here during summer 2023. It was my third workaway experience and it met all my expectations. It is a small core team, engaged, knowledgable and caring people that has put their life into building this organization from scratch and maintaining it, in line with the original core values. I was extremely motivated by how such a small

What a dream this month has been. I don't know where to start, how do you put in words an experience like that?
I volunteered for a month and I could not be more grateful to the team. The work consisted, in the morning, of sorting donations, making clothes packages for the people in camp. In the afternoon, we would go to camp and distibute
… read more clothing, sleeping bags, tents, blankets, etc., as well as interact with the people in camp, which was very enriching.
The team was so supportive, we had a very good atmosphere, which made the days we spent together incredibly sweet. We supported each other during the harder days and that really meant the world to me.
The work they do is incredible. The dedication, the hard work, the love they put into helping people is admirable and inspiring.
Thank you to Jed and Charlie, Zana and Laura, and all the other volunteers for making hundreds (thousands?) of lives more bearable and for embellishing mine. This experience has already shaped me into who I want to be and I hope to be back in Dunkirk soon!
Please, don't hesitate to reach out to the team, volunteers are essential to keep this charity running, and it will change your (and other people's) life for the better, I promise.
P.S.: I promise I wasn't paid for this feedback, that's just how good my experience was. Also, charities don't have money to waste on that ;)

I had a really great volunteering experience ! The work is tough at times, but incredibly rewarding and there is a brilliant team of other volunteers there to support you. The main tasks onsite were centred around distributing material aid such as tents, blankets and sleeping bags. Because the organisation is in camp 6 days a week, the long-term

Outside of work the volunteers spend a lot of time together having group dinners, going to the beach, and sometimes visiting local sites and attractions, which was really lovely. I originally planned on staying for just under a month, but ended up there for roughly 10 weeks ! I could not recommend enough, and am incredibly grateful to all the other volunteers who helped me have such an amazing experience.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

I had a wonderful time volunteering with the team. The members of the team were very welcoming and made sure I felt comfortable doing all the assigned tasks. The jobs included sorting clothes in the warehouse, collecting donations, handing out blankets/clothes/sleeping bags to the refugees in the camp, and providing assistance to those who needed
… read more it. Volunteering with this organization truly changed my life by reshaping how I view global humanitarian issues and how to respond to them. I really enjoyed talking to the people in the camp and have developed friendships with them that I still keep up with today. The tasks at the refugee camp site can be emotionally strenuous, especially if you are sensitive to these issues like I was. However, the team made sure that I never felt alone and were always there to help me process my feelings. Working with the team has played a huge role in helping me understand the impacts of systemic oppression and what can be done to counter it. I will forever be grateful for this experience and give my thanks to Jed, Charlie, and the rest of the team for their selflessness, hard work, and care that they’ve extended to the refugees at the camp and team members.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

My experience with the place has been very rewarding!
I am the first person to put feedback on workaway so I will try to be as precise as possible to help you make your choice.
The team is composed of 4/5 permanent people (English and German), who have been involved in this association for 3-4 years. We mainly speak English
… read more with each other. They live in a house and a small apartment in Calais. If there is enough space, you will sleep in one of these two houses. Personally I lived in the apartment.
The atmosphere is very nice, we often have dinner together when we come back from the camp, and we often eat very well! I discovered delicious Kurdish dishes! Everyone cooks from time to time.
Concerning the action itself, we go every day except Sunday to the camp of Grande-synthé, which is at 30min drive from Calais. It has a big warehouse 10 min drive from the camp with clothes, sleeping bags etc...
So every day we go at the end of the morning to the hangar, we gather the things we are going to distribute (we usually made a list the day before to meet the needs of the refugees). We also bring a generator and power points so that the refugees can charge their devices. We stay on average 3-4 hours in the camp. We distribute clothes, sleeping bags etc... And another big line of the place activities is the recharging of powerbanks. Every day the refugees bring us their empty powerbank, which we recharge in the evening and bring back the next day. To give you an idea of the size of the problem, we collect between 80 and 170 powerbanks every day. This service is very important because, apart from the times when associations provide electrical access, the powerbanks are the only sources of power in the camp. And it is the only one to offer this service.
Now that I have described the actions, I would like to explain the positive points but also the few points that may not suit everyone.
First of all I would like to point out that if you are looking for an association to have a real exchange with refugees, it is a perfect fit. The refugees know the place and the permanent volunteers very well. The fact that they stay 4 hours a day in the camp allows to discuss and have a real human exchange.
The philosophy of the place is really to consider each refugee in a unique way. That's why they make a list of things to bring every day according to their needs, in order to bring an adapted answer to each person.
It is a human-sized association, without a very defined structure. This is the point that I found a little complicated at the beginning, because you have to know that the schedules are not very precise. And you have to know how to be autonomous to be useful. But once I understood their way of doing things, it didn't bother me, and I even found some advantages. All ideas and initiatives are welcome.
The fact that the camp is in Grande-Synthé and the house in Calais is sometimes a bit annoying because it requires a good coordination and there are only 2 vehicles. I have a license but I could not drive because I was not insured and they are English vehicles so insurance is expensive.
But the place is planning to buy a French vehicle, so you may not have this problem
To conclude this (too ? 😉 ) long feedback,it is an extremely useful and helpful association. The permanent volunteers are people who impress me with their investments and are very welcoming.
PS: I hope you like dogs and cats because volunteers do!
