With this being a contracted and paid position, we need you to be either an EU citizen or have your Norwegian working visa in order to be employed legally. We would also encourage you to be committed to stay for 4-5 months.

We are a company that is providing winter and summer dogsledding tours in the two kennels of around 100 dogs it operates close to Tromsø, Norway. That's the background. What we aim for in general is to have a few more people in our small, close-knit international team that have an affinity for animals, an interest in outdoor life above the Arctic Circle and a willingness to learn as much as possible about the keeping and training of Alaskan Huskies, a special, wonderful breed of dogs, while helping us in the kennels in the training season and with our tourist trips afterwards. Yes, we are involved in tourism, and we try our best to do it the right, sustainable and respectful way, so that it keeps being fun for everybody involved, no matter the amount of legs they have.

The kennel in which we look help for is located in Breivikeidet, about 40 minutes from Tromsø, where the colds are not so cold (we rarely end up below -25C that is), the terrain is not so difficult, and the circumstances not so rustic, so it's a great place if you want to carefully dip your toes into the Arctic life.

With this being a contracted and paid position, we need you to be either an EU citizen or have your Norwegian working visa in order to be employed legally. We would also encourage you to be committed to stay for a few months (preferably like a full summer or winter season), because there's a lot to learn and there's not much point in leaving exactly when you would start to get to know the dogs and to actually know what you are doing. And most importantly, we are expecting a genuine love, care and a feeling of responsibility towards these wonderful animals.

Our team right now consists of Norwegian, German, Hungarian, French, Slovenian, Finnish, Dutch people and more, so yes, you'll meet a lot of people from a lot of different life stories - what brings us to the Arctic is different for everyone. What you'll technically learn is mostly described above, but you'll also learn respect towards the animals, and even more about yourself and what you are capable of once you are stepping out of your comfort zone - and we will be there to help you make it a great experience.

We are looking for trainees that want to start a new adventure in their lives and learn to be a great sled dog guide or volunteers that want to have a great time with sled dogs for a few months. (We also welcome couples by the way.) If you have no experience with sled dogs, but think you would be happy among them, have a great work ethic and are a fast learner who can take frequent early failure as a step towards learning, are always cool under pressure, plucky, and very adept at handling problems in a swift and expeditious manner, and can handle a bit of cold weather, then we are happy to provide a crash course in becoming a great sled dog guide so you can learn everything on the fly. (Yes, that includes driving a team of sled dogs on your own and also with guests behind you that you would be responsible for.) Once you're done with your training, you'll have a great chance of getting a job as a handler or guide, preferably with us in case of mutual interest, or anywhere else around the Arctic. You'll get a handler's salary and free accommodation according to Norwegian law already during this training period.

Your workdays (40 hours of work per week) will consist of feeding the dogs and cleaning around them a bit, preparing food, then getting dogs and sleds and equipment ready for the tourist trips, until mid-April at least. You'll also help out on the trail joining the trips (how else would you learn how this goes, right?), all the while taking a good care of the guests that arrive in our camp, sometimes also helping them change into Arctic clothing or offering them a coffee and a cake. (From mid-April tourist disappear for one and a half month, and it's just us and the dogs and the start of some moving and building projects for the summer - fun times!) And once snow melts, there's again a lot to learn and do about the summer life of the dogs.

But more importantly you will have a chance to build honest and meaningful relationships with the dogs, and learn a ton while having a great time in a great place with good-natured people. At the end of every day you'll be tired - but the good tired.

In the winter kennel you'll have your own room in a shared house for six in the middle of the kennel, with two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room - so showers, warm waters, wifi. In the summer you'll have a shared house for 4 people with the same amenities about 5 minutes from the kennel, and you'll rotate living in the cabin actually in the kennel - that's a bit more on the rustic side, but you'll only spend the occasional night there.

It's best to get to the nearest town every once in a while to stock up your food supplies, so you can either cook for yourself or join forces with the others to experience the different styles. Just remember to be patient and accepting so as to get along nicely with everyone - it's much nicer in the dark winter days that way.

Our kennel is situated in a lovely, picturesque valley. Apart from the surrounding mountains with opportunities to do most slopeside sports if you are not afraid of a little upwards climb first, Breivikeidet also has a small beach by walking distance. Public transportation is scarce, but in tourist season we have buses going back and forth between the camps and Tromsø city, and there are numerous great hiking spots as well in both areas. As long as you like nature, you won't be bored.
