    Descrição

    Hi travellers.

We are dairy farmers in the Far North. We offer a cultural exchange experience in exchange for some help around our home and garden.

You will get to live in the heart of the Far North. Just 15 minutes drive from the beach, views forever. Peaceful and relaxing.

We ask for 4 hours of help per day for five days per week in exchange for a stay near beaches beaches beaches, with views of Doubtless Bay and Rangiputa Harbour. This help will be in and around the home and garden.

It is an opportunity for you to come and join our family and see how a dairy farming family live in New Zealand. We start calving on the 1st April and have calves on farm until the end of July. So if you are animal-mad, this is a great time to come. The cows are here all year round. We are always happy to take people along with us for the farm experience.

We enjoy taking the Kontiki (longline) out on the beach to catch fish for dinner. An experience all of our visitors enjoy.
We have a large farm that previous workawayers have enjoyed learning about and taking walks around. One couple who were avid bird watchers counted over 30 species on one meander around the farm tracks.

We are hunters and farmers and therefore have found that we are not a suitable placement for Vegans as our lifestyle and diet do not suit this life choice. We believe in knowing where your food comes from and grow our own food as much as possible (including beef, eggs and dairy products). We try to avoid processed food so if you are a processed food addict you may want to bring some snacks with you. Baking is encouraged as a fun pastime.

Our previous visitors include a pastry chef from France who made the most delicious Tart de Limon we have ever tasted. Another visitor from France shared their favourite French food of poached egg in soggy bread with tomato sauce which resulted in a lot of laughter and very tentative tasting - our dogs ate well that night as we quickly whipped up a pizza for all to share. Another French visitor thankfully came along and made us Oeuf en Meurette which was insanely good and totally saved the French from having the worst recipe in the world. We have enjoyed cuisine attempts from around the world (sometimes because they are delicious - and other times because of the laughter they create) and always encourage people to share a 'national dish' or their own 'family favourite'. We have learnt pizza is a favourite with families around the world.

We also make cheese from our fresh raw milk and I am always happy to have someone learn this process from gathering the milk through to making and tasting the cheese. I make Havarti, Camembert, Halloumi, the occasional blue, and teach people to make lightning-fast mozzarella. Feta has just been added to the list.

We love boardgames and card games and have enjoyed many an evening sharing stories and enjoying a game with our visitors.

Our son is Lego-mad. If you are also Lego mad - or you are crazy about organising Lego - mention it in your comment to us as this will always be a bonus. He is hoping for someone who will help him go through the piles of Lego bricks to find the pieces for his castle and pirate ship. His parents and cousin have declined to help.

We are welcoming to all comers and enjoy learning about the far-flung reaches of the world. So far we have had visitors from China, Czeck, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, France, USA, England, Ireland, Canada and Turkey. We lived in the south of Chile for a year and loved our experiences in Chile and Argentina. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you.

    PETS:
Part of the workaway experience is getting to know our pets. We have two dogs, 12 chickens, and one beautiful cat who has recently been rescued.

  • Ajuda

    Ajuda

Mainly help around the home and garden. Always cleaning, organising, tidying, and cooking to do.

We do have a potential Chicken Coop project if you have the skills and interest. We want a whole lot of boards attached to existing fence - so good on a hammer would be of benefit, then add some windbreak. At this point the chickens roam free. This is causing devastation in the veggie patch.

Also have a big planting project coming up where we will be planting about 100 trees down the driveway.
