Living and working at our ER, you'll get hands-on experience working with horses, donkeys, mules, minis and other animals (plus goats and pigs) as well as running a non profit. No prior experience with animals is required. All that's needed is a good work ethic and an eagerness to learn.

There's a lot of small town charm to enjoy in downtown Clayton and there are greenways and trails you can take advantage of on your days off. We are 8 miles from Smithfield and also 8 miles from Clayton's downtown.

    1) We only accept people as rooms open up and only have one group space and 2 bedrooms available at any given time. Both rooms and the camper have opening.

    2) We expect that workaway volunteers will help around 5 hours a day with 2 days off preferably not the weekend. Depending on the task the schedule could be anytime between 8am to 8pm to get the work done. The first week is learning feeding and basic animal care, but we also need office tasks, grant writers, and other options.

    3) You would be staying in the house. Double bed and table and chair in the room. Shared bathroom, living room, kitchen, and laundry room. We are happy for you to join us for dinner and because I do not eat on Sundays volunteers can make a family meal or cook for themselves as well. You have full access to the refrigerators in both the house and volunteer area for other meals. Some rooms have a small refrigerator and microwave in them as well. You are welcome to buy your own food as well as suggest things for the monthly grocery delivery order. Some of our volunteers have dietary restrictions, have their groceries delivered separately, go to the store or to the local farmers market, and cooks their own food all of the time.

    4) You will need boots as it does get muddy, you should also have gloves. We do have some boots and gloves that we lone out to volunteers and must be put back in their place after each use. Jewelry can be dangerous around animals and we do warn you of the hazards. Facial jewelry and/or rings are not recommended during help, but that is your choice.

    5) No one can smoke in the house as Keith is on oxygen. The only rooms smoking is allowed are the office and Volunteer area. No one is allowed smoke or vape in the house or while working hands on with an animal.
