  This project aims to help local children ages 12-15 with their basic English at the St. Francis Centre in Mae Ta Wo. Mae Ta Wo is home to Karen hill tribe, where approx. 30 children stay, learn and practice the catholic religion. The local parish priest Peter Jee is looking for a maximum of 2 volunteers to stay in the church premises and help the children with their English informally through playing games, drawing together and any other creative ideas you have! Giving the gift of your English skills will allow the children to seek better job opportunities and have more success in the future.
  
  St. Francis Centre is located in north western Thailand, Mae Ta Wo, surrounded by mountains and right along the river of the Myanmar border. Most of the villagers are working in agriculture. Here they grow their own vegetables, and raise chickens for food. They also have turtles!
  
  This mission begins in the St. Francis Centre in the heart of Mae Ta Wo where you will share your English language by conversing, completing daily activities and more with the younger generation of children. These children have some prior English as they learn it in school so the goal is to help them feel more confident with their English. The children are also very excited and eager to learn making it easy for you to teach!
  
  *IF AVAILIBLE* Father Peter may also take you to the smaller villages in the mountains around to help share your culture with the locals, join celebrations, as well as immersing yourself in their culture.
  
  During weekdays the children go to school from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, so you will have those hours of the day to have free time and do other activities around the the town, i.e. taking a boat tour along the river where you can see waterfalls, visiting local shops and restaurants or climbing the mountain to see the temple. On weekends you will be with the children all day.
  
  Depending on how long you stay you may be invited to the children's school to help teach students English - class would be around 1 hour
  
  SEMESTER TIMES: Sem 1: May - October, Sem 2: November - March
  
  VERY IMPORTANT:
  Here they foster a strong culture so proper clothing is a must (especially during prayer). Males and females must cover legs (long shorts, pants, skirts, dresses), shoulders also must be covered (long sleeve, t-shirt). This is very important for the people of Mae Ta Wo as it shows you respect their culture.
  
  Not many foreigners come to this region because of its distant location. Therefore the English level here is minimal, and being native speaker or having teaching skills is not a requirement.
  
  The parish priest Peter is organizing this project, and he will be the main contact and he will help you with everything. In the church there is a cook who will provide you with 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At the church everyone eats together so you will be eating at meal time with everyone else.
  
  Your room will have one twin bed (mosquito nets included) as well as an attached bathroom equipped with a toilet, sink and a cold water shower.
  
  The village is rather small but beautiful, and the villagers and children are very friendly and happy to see new people. The villagers are thankful for every volunteer who comes and teaches English to the children.

  You can immerse yourself in Catholic culture and way of life in the village. Spend time with villagers, see their daily work, and habits, how they can enjoy their basic way of life in Thailand countryside as well as experiencing and appreciating it for yourself.
  
  Sometimes you can be invited by the priest to local events, there are many events all year around, like rice field blessing, rice or mango festivals, etc.
  
  If you like you can also visit other hill tribe villages, or try work on field with locals, or just play with the kids outside.

  Ajuda

  The idea is that volunteer(s) will help with teaching English - to motivate kids, talk with them, and play with them.
  
  Kids are mostly available at the weekends, and also every day after school, approx. between 4 and 6pm, but its not necessary to teach every day. We are looking to make the teaching fun as the kids are usually tired after a full day of school but they are very excited to learn English and interact with volunteers.
  
  It's up to the volunteers how much time they would like to help beside teaching in church, you are welcome to organize your time throughout the day how you'd like. You can walk around the village and talk to the locals and there are also temples, boat tours, restaurants, rice farming and other exciting places to discover in the local area. There are also other opportunities to help locals with English, for example in the village school during the day and visit local families at their homes. The priest also visits other church parishes and you are able to join in and also visit them.

  The bedrooms are located in the dining/mess hall area. You will have a private room with a twin bed and a lock. A bathroom attached with a shower (cold water only), a toilet with a bidet (manual flushing), and a sink. It gets pretty hot during the day here so there is also fans located in each bedroom to help keep it cooler.
  
  They will provide you with blankets, and pillows, as well as a mosquito net surrounding the bed.
  
  You will also be provided with 3 meals a day on a time schedule. They have very basic meals (soup, curry, rice, chicken, pork, local vegetables and fruits) and they are delicious! And when you volunteer they love to feed you extra.
  
  Be sure to bring your own toiletries and towels as they are not provided for you.
  
  You are welcome to do laundry here, they have machines to wash and dry or you may do it by hand. Though its suggested to dry your clothes outside if the weather allows you to.

  Bangkok airport international Suvarnabhumi (BKK), is the closest airport to the village. From Bangkok you will take a coach bus to Mae Sot - 8-9 hours, after arriving in Mae Sot you will take the local orange bus to Mae Tan - 2-3 hours, and then connect to another orange bus to get to Mae Ta Wo - 1 hour.
  
  Don't be nervous! It's actually a very easy route and you can split the travel into two days (stay in Mae Sot for 1 night) - very common for volunteers.
  
  IF POSSIBLE volunteers are welcome to bring their own English school material, this will help the kids learn better! Especially sheets where they can practice writing their English.
  
  They have a fixed time table of when they pray, eat, shower, study, and sleep. It's the same routine everyday, very simple basic living.
  
  There is available WiFi, and signal reception is good in the village.
