We are a nice family with 2 girls named Jeanne (13 years) and Capucine (11 years). We live 30 minutes from Lyon, in a house with a garden. We need help for the house , for cooking and the garden.

We like to meet people from other countries and cultures and share experiences and have fun together. We love nature, the mountains, cooking jam and the friendly evening with friends.

I fyou like cooking, we want to learn to make jam in our home-made jam factory and share our interests.

We are only twenty minutes from Lyon town centre ( the second city of France) so you can enjoy the vibrant life of this charming town with ease and all it has to offer.

If you like sports this place is ideal for running, biking, trekking....

We are friendly, respectful to everyone. It's important to us that Workaways benefit too from their stay and having had a great time and hopefully having gained confidence, increased their interpersonal skills and cultural awareness.

You will gain French language experience. I hope you will improve your knowledge of traditional French food and wine.

I had the most wonderful summer experience with Melanie and Thomas. They really made me and my co-worker feel so welcome and truly like one of the family. We spent 5 weeks together, and I will never forget their kindness and the fun times we had.

This is truly a trip I will never forget. During the week I worked from 9-12 and 2-4 , 4-5 days a… read more week depending on what Melanie and Thomas wanted. We mostly processed fruits and vegetables for jam making, by cutting, chopping and juicing them. While we worked, we would talk in french and listen to music. It was very peaceful and always relaxed me. My favorite job was cutting up the peaches and removing the pits. They were so fun to squish! And If my coworker and I wanted a day off to explore, they would gladly rearrange the work schedule and were very reasonable in their expectations. If you respect them, they will respect you.

I got to watch the girls some days which was so wonderful. The girls are little angels and very patient if you are not fully fluent in French. They are so cute and very friendly. The girls like to bake, and Melanie and Thomas let me and the girls have full reign of the kitchen and make all sorts of desserts while I was there.

I am vegan and they were more than accommodating in providing plenty of healthy options for me and cooking for me. Melanie would ask what I would like from the store and always brought back what I requested and more.

I got to speak french 24/7 and when there was a miscommunication, they were very patient and would try to explain in English for me or simplify what they were saying in French.

Initially, I was a little bit worried about going to a foreign country by myself in which I did not fully speak the language and didn't know anyone. And then live with a bunch of people I had never met before, but Melanie and Thomas will truly take wonderful care of you and are very thoughtful. For example, I had expressed how I missed sushi, and the next day, Melanie went to the international supermarket and bought seaweed and sushi making ingredients for us to make later in the week.

I also must say, my co-worker was also fantastic and made the experience so amazing. It was great to gain a sister for a short time and work/explore with. She and I would take mini trips to explore Lyon and Marseilles. I cannot say I would have enjoyed the workaway as much without her.

I stayed with Mélanie and Thomas for three weeks and it was a truly unforgettable experience.
When I arrived in Chazay I was very sick with high fever, and also a bit nervous about becoming part of an (at that point) unknown family. I found it very hard to speak French 24/7, too. And so, the first days weren't easy for me. However the family… read more welcomed me very warmly from the first second I walked into their house. They took great care of me, were always patient and enthusiastic, booked me a doctors appointment and even gave me a room in their house (instead of the caravan) because it was extremely hot and the house was cooler and more comfortable.

Mélanie and Thomas are very relaxed people, who are happy to share their home and (plentiful!) food with you. Their two little girls are very energetic and they love to talk and show you things, which I needed to get used to in the beginning, because I'm used to live on my own very quietly, but ended up loving since they bring so much life and excitement to your day.

When it comes to the work, it's pretty straight forward and not very tiring. I worked from 8:30 in the mornings until lunch time and then another 2 or 2,5 hours in the afternoon. The tasks in summer mainly include cutting fruits and vegetables to freeze them for winter. Occasionally I also put labels on jars of jam, and one weekend we went to a nearby local festival to sell ice creams. I really loved that trip!

Since, as an office worker, I'm not really used to work with my hands, I couldn't work as fast as Mélanie can (she peels tomatoes faster than lightning!) but for sure practice helps a lot and I was always assisted very kindly and got a very honest merci each and every evening. I really appreciated that!

The family tries their best to include you in everything they do, from eating all together to going on little trips to nearby places, swimming in the river, or even arranging sleepovers with one of their friends while travelling around the region in the weekend.

So all in all, I had an amazing stay and I would definitely recommend this Workaway. I have had lot's of opportunities to speak French, never cut so many onions and courgettes in my life, ate heaps of amazing home made sorbet, had many good laughs and felt very welcome and at ease. If I had known it would be this great, I'd definitely have stayed longer!
