Hello Workawayers :) We are searching for open-minded and passionate people to help run our hostel and fundraising events for our local development foundation.
Nestled just outside the busy surf town of Weligama on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is Janaka's peaceful guest house / hostel.
CURRENT MISSION: Raising money for our development foundation :)
We would love to accept caring volunteers, who have a passion for
- Marketing
- Fundraising
- Creating classes (whatever interests you, from DIY to ecstatic dance or tattooing, feel free!)
- NGO work
- Branding
or whatever tickles your beautiful brain!
In regards to Janaka's local development foundation - we believe that if somebody is hungry, don't give them a fish. Instead, give them a fishing rod and show them how to catch fish. We want Weligama people 'to stand up and stand tall'. That’s why we believe that helping local children and youth of Weligama to receive an education will change the course of Sri Lanka.
Our foundation was created in 2010 to help Sri Lankan families, six years after the Tsunami. It was supported by a European NGO until 2016. The activities were restarted by Janaka’s family and Alice from France in 2019, in collaboration with volunteers from Workaway that brought their talent and experiences to the team. But all activities were put on hold with the pandemic.
Now in 2022 Janaka is reaching out to the Workaway community to give their time for a good cause in Sri Lanka and to restart activities that can help unprivileged school children from Weligama area. Janaka owns a large 3-floor hostel with a lot of potential, and our current focus is to make progress with the newly opened hostel and guest house (Kirala garden) in order to have a sustainable source of income to support the people of Weligama.
We ask our volunteers to help around 5 hours a day, 5 days a week to help with the everyday upkeep tasks around the hostel, as well as helping with managing bookings and organizing fundraising events such as our weekly cooking classes with Janaka's family. We offer an authentic cultural exchange, a rare privilege for many travelers in Sri Lanka, as not only will you be fully immersed in wonderful Sri Lanka nature mere minutes away from the touristy town center - you will also be spending lots of time with Janaka's family (a perfect opportunity to learn and practice your Sinhala, and to master Sri Lankan cooking!).
Due to the nature of our work, we ideally prefer long-term volunteers (many of our past workawayers are now part of our ever-growing family and return to see how our project is evolving). Having said that, we can absolutely accommodate shorter stays as well - we ask that you

We offer a real cultural exchange, you will see our lifestyle, and you will be part of our local community.
As you will be in daily contact with Sri Lankans, you will have a great opportunity to learn and practice Sinhalese, to learn to cook Sri Lankan dishes, drink kirala juice, play carrom (a mixture between air-hockey and pool), and meet our local community.

Acomodação
We provide you in our community house bed (double) with en-suite bathroom. Depending on the number of workawayers here, you might share the room with someone else. We have a huge garden and a nice terrace, where you can watch monkeys, peacocks and bats.
We have space for up to 4/5 volunteers, couples are welcome.
Come and be a part of something really special. You will experience community life where people share and learn from each other.

We are located 2.5 km from the Weligama beach, next to the river in the jungle.
Waves, turtles, ocean… you can enjoy sport activities during your free time like surfing, swimming, snorkeling and yoga.
Sri Lanka has its own Ayurvedic system based on a series of prescriptions handed down from generation to generation over a period of 3000 years. If you are interested in alternative medicine this is your place.
Tropical fruit, fresh vegetable, oriental spices… enjoy the Sri Lankan gastronomy.

Kirala Garden has plenty of space for digital nomads, we have a good internet connection and a quiet space overlooking our beautiful gardens. We can offer this including a private peaceful room for $10 a day.
