I am Elio. I live in front of Machu picchu, I am beginning a new project for welcoming tourist in a really nice place on the salkantay trek, we live between the jungle and high montain, about 2 - 3 hours from the first town, we need help in this wild place where no machine can come.

It is a family property where I live with my mother, she sometimes does the work for welcome tourist and she needs help to grow the place, maintain the garden and working on the landscape.

Currently we do not have people working with us and my mother and I are not enough to cover the tasks of cleaning in the field, collecting firewood and vegetables, cooking or to build a small wooden house.

Observe Salkantay, Humantay and Machu Picchu with a telescope, all this from the volunteer house.
A lot of travelers stay there for a night and you can do great meeting.
We do not have electricity but we can charge cell phone batteries, laptops and others depending on sunlight.

Ese voluntario con Elio y su madre Susana fue nuestro primero. No hubieramos podido encontrar un mejor lugar! Toda la familia fue muy amable con nosotros!

Nos quedamos dos semanas. La vista es increíble, a sólo 5km del Machu Picchu! Así durante un fin de semana que teníamos libre, fuimos visitarlo. El trabajo nos gustó… read more también, había que construir una cabaña de madera (pero las proximas serán diferentes :)) y aprendimos diferentes tecnicas: perforar, serrar, lijar, sepillar,... No teníamos experiencia en construcción. Hemos traido cosas (comida, materiales...) desde abajo hasta el mirador. No es una tarea impuesta, es posible elegir las actividades.

Hablabamos sólo en español, pero Elio entiende bien inglés y ahora un poco de francés también ;) Hemos aprendido mucho, sobre las costumbres, las verduras de Perú,... La comida de Susana es perfecta! Van a disfrutar y descubrir nuevas cosas. Para las noches teníamos una habitación con una cama y muchas cobijas disponibles. Las condiciones no son faciles: agua fria por el momento, en Diciembre es la época de lluvia y de niebla, poco electricidad. Pero se puede superar! Consejamos ese voluntario a personas en buena condición física, por ejemplo para llegar arriba hay que subir 800 metros!

Otra vez, muchas gracias a ustedes por esa experiencia, Elio, Susana, Pedro, y esparamos verles pronto!

Elio et sa mère Susana ont été les premières personnes chez qui nous avons fait du volontariat. Nous ne pouvions pas mieux tomber ! Toute la famille fut très gentille avec nous !

Nous sommes restés deux semaines. Le cadre est magnifique, une vue époustouflante à 5km à vol d'oiseau du Machu Picchu ! D'ailleurs nous avons profité d'un week-end de libre pour faire l'aller-retour et visiter le site. Le travail nous a plu également, il s'agissait de construire une bâtisse en bois (mais pour la suite, je crois que d'autres matériaux sont prévus :)), pour laquelle différentes techniques ont été nécessaires : percer, scier, poncer,... À noter que nous n'avions pas d'expérience dans la construction. Nous avons également porté des affaires du bas de la montagne jusqu'au col où se trouve le mirador (matériaux, nourriture, ...). Mais c'était avec plaisir, il est possible de choisir ses activités.

Nous communiquions uniquement en espagnol, même si Elio comprend assez bien l'anglais (et un peu le français à présent !). Nous avons beaucoup appris sur les coutumes, légumes locaux,... Les repas de Susana sont parfaits ! Vous vous régalerez et découvrirez de nouvelles choses. Pour l'hébergement nous avions une chambre avec un lit et plein de couvertures disponibles. Les conditions de vie sont assez rustiques : eau froide pour le moment, en décembre c'était la saison humide donc pluies et brouillard fréquents, peu d'électricité. Mais on s'y fait ! On conseille tout de même d'être un minimum sportif pour s'engager, sachant que par exemple il faut monter 800m de dénivelé pour arriver au col !

It was our first volunteering and we could not have found a better place than in the house of Elio and his mother Susana! The whole family was very kind to us!

We stayed there two weeks. This place is beautiful, with an outstanding view at 5km from Machu Picchu! We liked to work here as well. It was about building a small wood house (but I heard the next house won't be made of wood!) and we did drill, saw, sand... We had no experience in construction but it went well. We also carried stuff (construction material and food supplies) from the bottom of the mountain to the mirador. But there was no obligation, you can choose your activities.

We only talked in spanish, even if Elio can speak english and a little bit of french. We did learn a lot about local customs, special vegetables,... Susana's food was perfect! You will appreciate it a lot and discover new things. As accommodation we had a bedroom with its bed and a lot of available blankets. Life is a bit rough there: cold water for now, in December it was wet season so we often had rain and fog, and few electricity. But you get used to it! We advise people who want to volunteer here to be in good shape, for example to reach to the mirador there is a 800 meters climb!
