My name is Peter Halerimana and I am the director of the Organic Coffee Organisation. I am firstly a family man of five daughters and two sons, some of the children are studying and others like my son Ronald take an active role in the coffee tours we organise. We have twenty three years experience in producing coffee through every phase of its life until it reaches the cup.
Our coffee farm is located a kilometer or two from Kisoro, a town nestled beneath the famous Virunga volcano range in Western Uganda. This is where you'll stay with my family as a volunteer, where you'll walk among the coffee trees every day and learn about the processes and methods involved in growing, harvesting, preparing and roasting coffee. These are also the things we teach visiting groups of tourists who enjoy a tour of our farm and a cup of coffee roasted before their eyes by my wife. My wife is head winnower of the dried and pounded coffee and thereafter chief roaster of the beans.
As a volunteer you will help with every aspect of the coffees production, dependent a little on seasonality, from germinating seeds and their care in our nursery bed, to pruning trees, harvesting beans and the later processes of roasting and understanding how we package our ground beans. I welcome you as a member of our family to enjoy with us the fruits of our beautiful area, to help contribute in any way you can and learn from us about a product that we love.Tipos de ajuda e oportunidades de aprendizado

There is a lot to learn by staying with my family and on our farm because of the raw nature of our business. That is, we are the starting point, the growers, so you'll learn the ways of coffee production from a little bean rubbed in ashes and planted in our nursery bed, to the roasting of those beans as trees many years later. Besides the coffee, our area is rich with history and nature. We speak a dialect quite unique to that of Luganda spoken in Central Uganda that we will happily teach you, the peoples of our region have influences from the close borders of Rwanda and DRC, and you'll discover the abundance of wildlife in our national parks. Birders take note that we have a profusion of beautiful birds in the area.

We'd love you to help not only in every aspect of our little business, but also by contributing your own ideas and developments you think might help us. Coffee is something we know how to do, but help with online promotion, designing marketing materials and computer work would be much appreciated.
We have tasks for volunteers of all types, from the ground work of helping with the coffee trees, seedling care, pruning, harvesting and preparation, to construction tasks with those who have building experience. We are constructing a new viewing platform which has spectacular views where tourists can sip their coffee and enjoy respite. In addition, we are renovating a number of buildings to create places for tourists to stay when they visit and would like to remain a little longer.Idiomas

My wife and family will provide hearty meals and we can help you in finding any local conveniences or necessaries required by visiting town.Algo mais...
Kisoro town and it's surrounding area has everything that a volunteer will need, from those basic conveniences of internet access in a handful of internet cafes to the essentials of local clinics and pharmacies. Of course, there are also nice restaurants and cafes serving local coffees and meals throughout the day. The activities available are nearly endless from those big things like gorilla tracking and golden monkey tracking, to nature walks and canoeing on local lakes. Our farm is very close to Lake Mutanda and less than thirty minutes from other lesser known lakes where birds are plentiful.
You can hike the volcanoes in your free time, gaze after birds on a lake or chill out in a coffee shop in town with internet access. There are many choices for different volunteers and if there is something in particular you'd like to find or do, we'll point you in the right direction.Mais alguns detalhes

We were initially coming to give a hand on coffee farming, but we've been learning far beyond it. We've learnt how to cook with firewood vegetables and any kind of greens from the garden. We've been learning the very basics of Rufumbira local… read more
They really gave us a warm welcome, cooking very nice local food and showing all the places around!
