I live on a 240 acre organic farm in rural mid-Devon. I have a flock of 180 breeding sheep and a herd of 28 cows whose offspring are all fattened on the farm for meat. In recent years there has been regular tree planting on the farm, and I am involved with an agroforestry trial, experimenting with planting trees into land to be grazed by livestock.
My aim is to produce organic meat from animals that have had contented and comfortable lives on a farm which is welcoming to wildlife. I aspire to run a carbon-neutral operation and studies measuring biodiversity, soil and carbon footprint are ongoing on the farm.
I have grown-up children who have left home and I'm now living alone here for much of the time. I have regular local help on one and a half days a week.
In the springtime I generally look for workaway help with lambing. At other times of year there are endless different tasks to do around the house and farm including tree care, garden and farm maintenance, help with routine livestock tasks, building repair and maintenance etc.
There is a holiday cottage on the farm which is let out to visitors in the summer.
The farm is also home to one cat, three dogs and a horse.

I am happy to pass on any agricultural or other knowledge that I have. Hands-on experience of lambing and other farm tasks is available. You will experience rural English life. Sometimes there are local events that I will be happy to introduce you to.

Depending on what time of year it is jobs will include livestock care, fence repair, wood chopping, garden maintenance, strimming, all sorts of maintenance and repair tasks on the farm and in farm buildings and the house, painting and decorating etc, etc. Farming is not always predictable and visitors should be willing to help out with whatever comes up.
At lambing time in March a high proportion of the work is likely to be caring for ewes and newborn lambs. At this time some experience with livestock would be an advantage and a liking for animals and confidence around them is essential.
At any time people with DIY skills and experience are especially welcome. My buildings and farm infrastructure are in need of some attention.

In the winter and early spring workaway accommodation is in a recently converted holiday cottage on the farm.
For the summertime there is a bedsit with it's own entrance in a room in my house. It has basic cooking facilities and equipment. Bathroom facilities are shared with me. Couples or 2 friends travelling together would be ideal at this time.
Usually workawayers mostly prepare their own food, but we share meals from time to time.

We are in a very beautiful part of Devon, and within reach of Dartmoor and Exmoor. North and South coasts are both about an hour's drive away. There are buses from nearby villages (3 miles) to Exeter which is the county town with all amenities. Visitors should be aware that the farm is in a fairly isolated area and public transport is quite limited. There is a pub and village shops a 40 minute walk away, but not much else, so rural living needs to be to your taste.

The accomodation was a beautiful cottage to ourselves, which was modern and had everything you could need for a comfortable and cozy time there.
During our time there we got the chance to watch some live music in the village hall, which we would recommend if you get the opportunity. There is lots of nature to explore and many opportunities to see birds and deer in the fields.

We were also involved with the tree planting projects and various maintenance tasks which helped give a good and varied experience of farming life.
The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped and needed for nothing else.
Great place to go walking around the land and further afield and Hen also invited us to local events where we were made to feel most welcome.
Overall this was a amazing experience and we feel extremely grateful for having had this opportunity which we would happily return to.

Aq'ab'al was brilliant at tidying, clearing and decorating indoors and out.
Early in their stay they converted a room in my house into a fully-equipped bedsit for their own use and for future workaway guests. They created a really lovely space, making use of the many bits and pieces that were lying around unused and thinking of everything necessary to make the place comfortable. Aq'ab'al even used her skills as an artist to decorate the walls which has made it a really special space.
If you want to get things done I can thoroughly recommend this couple. They work independently and manage the projects that they are asked to take on efficiently. They are also great to have around - interesting and friendly, and respectful of other people's space. Their dog Inja is very sweet and incredibly well-behaved and unobtrusive. I have 3 dogs, a cat and a bunch of farm livestock, and she never caused a single problem.

Big thanks to Hen who took me on short notice when another workaway fell through! Hen is a great host, great cook, easy going and has a wealth of knowledge about farming. The farm is very tidy and organised and the livestock are in top order. The work was varied including feeding out, maintaining buildings/equipment and tree work.
The… read more accommodation I had was likely the best you could find on workaway. On days when Hen was away, I would have a squad of three dogs and a cat following me everywhere, always vying for my attention!

Rob and his partner, Clemmie, came for a month to help me out with lambing and other jobs around the farm. They were a huge help with all aspects of the sheep husbandry and Rob's previous experience was incredibly useful as he could do all tasks competently and without supervision.

The two of them were a lot of fun to have around. Rob even brought his bouzouki to a village gathering and entertained the locals. Happily they are coming back again in the summer to look after my farm while I'm away.
Matt and Jo are highly experienced workawayers, and it shows! They initially stayed on the farm for the month of February and got loads of jobs done. They are extremely capable and practical and I just needed to point them at a job and they would find everything they needed, work out the best way to do the job and get on with it till it was done.… read more They regularly put in more hours than they needed to and the finished result always exceeded my expectations.
I was delighted that they agreed to return a month later to help out with the last of the lambing and preparing my holiday cottage for visitors. They were careful and thorough looking after animals and did a fantastic job of smartening up the cottage.
They were great house guests too. Extremely considerate at all times and cooked some very good meals.
If you are looking for two independent, practical, friendly people to help you out I can't recommend Matt and Jo highly enough.
We really enjoyed our stay helping Hen at the farm, so much so that we went back a month later to stay for another 2 weeks.
There were always a variety of different jobs to do, helping with the sheep and cows, planting trees, painting and gardening, and these gave us some great and satisfying experiences.

I had a wonderful time at Hen's farm. I didn't know anything about breeding yet but that didn't stop me from participating in all the tasks. My stay was during lambing so my main job was to look after the sheep and lambs but I also had the opportunity to work with the cows, maintain the farm and the fields. During my recent stay I had opportunities to help with the lambing and calving on Hen's farm which is located in the most amazing rural setting. Be prepared for it to be slightly remote although kindly Hen offered lifts to the nearest bus station and train station. Mornings could consist of feeding the pregnant ewes, checking on them, helping with lambing if needed, bedding down the cows or sheep, helping tag the calves, moving cows, taking down tree guards, helping replace tree guards and moving sheep with lambs to different fields. The afternoons were free to explore the surrounding area and just chill out. During busy times I helped out during the afternoons and evenings. Hen is also a fantastic cook and I enjoyed our evenings sitting around the table and sharing stories. I throughly relished my experience at Hen's gorgeous farm which has so much character. I really had a beautiful month at the farm. It was a huge learning experience for me and Hen was so Patient to teach me and she is a very caring. The huge trust that Hen put in me was really fantastic and I felt very independent but also aware of my responsibilities, I felt like I am running my own farm.

Landscape nearby are so picture perfect that you just want to stop sometime and admire the nature around you. I love their two super cute dogs (Fido and Jumble), a handsome horse(Mr. Homes) and sitting on hill top, watching the beauty is one of the most peaceful things you can do (in my opinion).
I wanted to learn about organic farming and gained a better connection of where our food comes from . I absolutely was able to achieve this, and had an awesome time doing it. The remoteness of the location is definitely something to be considered. I didn't mind this at all, as I am use to spent months at sea during my job.
Hen was absolutely wonderful hosts. The accommodations were beautiful. The whole ranch itself was gorgeous. I felt right at home very early in my stay and have nothing but great things to say about this workaway destination. Eating lunch and dinner with Hen and her family was one of the best part of workaway, as whole family is wonderful and are very knowledgeable individuals. I learned so much, and was very appreciative of them answering all of my curiosities and questions about farming/ranching/ culture (among many other things).
The expected work was quite varied, which is great because it is always interesting and unique. I helped feed the animals, herded animals into new fields/locations, gardened, cleaned the barn, looking after calves, lambs. Also I was lucky enough to be there at perfect time of lambing and calving. I think i become at least a rookie veterinary doctor (in my own brain). I loved being able to learn about the whole process. I found her expectations completely reasonable and was delighted to volunteer.
I wish the best to Hen, Mose, Nel and the ranch, and I hope to cross paths with them again someday. Thank you for having me, I am eternally grateful for everything you have taught me.

( theater, cycle, show me some place for sight seeing, games..). I was sleeping in a lovely cottage that I shared with a other workaway, Simone. (very nice too). To conclude, don't hesitate to going here. You will be not disappointed ! For sure (except if you dislike the tea..ahah)

We loved having Arnaud on our farm for a month. He was competent with machinery and animals, always willing to help out and always friendly and cheerful. He was also a very good house guest who fitted in with the family very easily. His stay was a great pleasure.

Simone was a huge help on our farm at lambing time. She was instinctively capable with the sheep and other animals and always keen to try new tasks. All her work was thorough and well done. She was also very friendly and easy in the house, got on well with all the family and made great cakes and brownies! Her stay was a pleasure.

I had such a lovely time with Hen and her family! The farm was beautiful and the animals all a pleasure to work with. I particularly enjoyed the very hands on experience I was able to have with the lambing and loved taking care of the orphans day to day.
