    I prefer to host friends travelling together or couples. We only work 3-4 hours a day and with just one helper we cannot keep up with the weeds. There is a lot to see and do on and off the farm so plan on staying for 2 weeks or even a bit longer. I have lots of dogs on the farm in the summer so it will be easier if you like dogs. I have 5 of my own right now and we often have up to 5 more staying with us.

    =============================================================================================

    We are happy to provide a healthy and varied selection of local and mostly organic meals including many of our own vegetables from the garden. Unfortunately we will no longer be able to host vegetarian or vegan helpers. I am very sorry to have to post this but due to repeated experiences with helpers making extensive (and expensive) demands for specialty foods we can no longer accommodate these dietary demands.

    =============================================================================================

    Our farm is peaceful and quiet - except for the dogs - but only 10 minutes to the city. Join us if you would like to spend a few weeks outside with your hands in the dirt, breathing fresh air and enjoying the sunshine. Some days its hard work but we only work for 3-4 hours in the morning and it is always satisfying and rewarding when you see the difference you've made at the end of every day. We will plan healthy meals together and eat outside on the deck whenever it is warm enough. If you need a break from the real world come and enjoy the pace of farm life.

    =============================================================================================

    We prefer COUPLES or FRIENDS traveling together.
    This allows us to all work shorter days (3-4 hours) and still get everything done - usually before lunch.

    Must love dogs! I have 2 big dogs and 3 little dogs (yup 5 dogs). They are all super friendly and love attention. Mostly rescues and also 2 friendly farm cats. They will follow you all day long and love to help with garden chores. Don't worry though - your private space is pet free. Hard and fast rule - no pets in the trailer and no cats in the house.

    April - We will prep and plant two vegetable gardens. General cleanup, managing the soil, moving compost getting ready for the growing season. I have both a raised bed garden and an open garden with a mix of perennials (raspberries, asparagus, cherry) and lots of room for cold crops. We start plants under lights and move them outside when it is warm enough. We use no-till/mulch methods to cut down on weeding. I also have a dozen or so flower boxes, pots and planters to prepare and seed.

    May- I have 3 large composts that feed our gardens. We will prepare the main garden area and set up water collection systems, soaker hoses, timers and gravity feeds. Lots of seeding and planting in May. The shrub garden and fruit trees will start to blossom in May and we will tend to those gardens as needed. We are starting a new garden with perennials and trees this year so will need help designing, prepping and planting that area.

    June- More seedlings started indoors under lights go out into the garden in June. That mostly includes tomatoes and peppers. And a few flowers. Come learn everything you need to know about putting in a family farm garden. Composting, mulching, water management, no dig, organic methods, permaculture practices. June is usually a busy month for mulching and weeding. We will also set up the swimming pool. Great to keep cool after a hot day in the garden.

    July and August- Mostly just weeding and watering. We will add mulch to the gardens to keep the weeds down and eat from the garden every day. We have plans for a few new interesting projects this year in case we get bored. The pool is up so we can cool off after working in the garden.

    September- Harvest season in the garden means digging up potatoes, onions, carrots, and beets. Picking peppers, tomatoes and beans, as well as the last of the raspberries. We will freeze and can and make jam and store vegetables in the cold room for winter. Packing away the watering systems, yard and garden cleanup will keep us all busy.

    ===============================================================================================

    I prefer to work mornings so you can take the sunny afternoons off to go hiking or sightseeing in the mountains. Plus it's a bit cooler. However, we are very flexible if you want to arrange hiking and camping trips. We work 3-4 hours every morning (21-25 hours/week) but are happy to move things around to allow for full day trips off the farm.

    THE BASICS

    I prefer to host couples or friends traveling together. There is lots to do on the farm and gardening is always more fun with friends. Preference will be given to those with a genuine interest in gardening. We are flexible in terms of work hours and time off if you want to plan trips to the mountains or the city.

    We acquired a pretty new, very clean, travel trailer for helpers to stay in. It is your own private space with a view of the valley, mountains and stars at night. It does have power and your own small fridge but no water. You have your own private bathroom nearby.

    We can provide coffee, tea, milk, fruit, cereal etc for breakfast in the trailer or if you prefer a hot breakfast you are welcome to come up to the house. Meals are in the house or on the deck every day and volunteers are expected to help with meal planning, prep and cleanup.

    We are close to DeWinton, Okotoks, Millarville, Diamond Valley, Priddis, Bragg Creek etc.

    GENERAL INFO

    The farm is located 10 minutes from Calgary and 15 minutes from the train station. We live on a small (20 acre) family farm just south of Calgary. We have vegetable and herb gardens, 2 cats, a large but friendly Marremma (like a Great Pyrenees), a Collie and 3 little house dogs. No animals in the trailer - ever - for those with allergies.

    I prefer to host couples / friends traveling together. My gardens are too big for one person especially in the spring when we are prepping and planting and racing the clock to get everything in at the beginning of the season.

    We are a very small family farm. Work will consist mostly of tending to the vegetable and herb gardens. You can also ride the mower, weed the gardens, work the compost bins, and tend to fences. I appreciate help preparing meals and cleaning up as necessary. Expect to spend the majority of your days outside. Afternoons are spent in the pool (June July August) and evenings by the fire.

    We are a happily married (40 years) couple, with no children. Lance is in IT and Kathleen is retired from a career in sales. After a sunny day in the garden we spend our evenings in the pool on the deck and relaxing by the fire. It is a very private and quiet rural setting surrounded by the rolling foothills and mountain views.

    Day trips to Banff/Canmore/Bragg Creek/Black Diamond/Okotoks can be arranged for volunteers staying longer. Calgary and the the LRT station are only 15 minutes away.

    I have asthma and am very sensitive to perfume and scents. Please refrain from using strong perfume, aftershave or cologne and even some scented shampoo and conditioners or body wash products (I'll let you know.)

    We have excellent wifi in our home.

    BY THE WAY . . .

    My guests have told me to add a note to say that the food here is very good.
    Apparently that isn't always case . . . I do like to cook.
    I shop for fresh, organic food from the farmers market every week.
    You are welcome to join me so that we make things we will all enjoy.
    We always have lots of fresh fruit and homemade treats (cookies/brownies/muffins) around.

    If you like fresh, healthy, homemade meals, fresh air, gardening, and sunshine - you will be happy here.

    I am happy to introduce you to the farmers and friends that live nearby and show you their yards and gardens. We can visit the bison farm in the area and a friend who has chickens, goats, rabbits and a fabulous 100 year old garden. My neighbours have cattle and horses and we are close to the mountains and hiking trails. The farmers market in Millarville is our weekly shopping stop and has been in operation for over 100 years.

    Most help required will consist of general gardening, planting, and weeding in the family garden. The gardens need spring prep, the yard will need cleanup, mowing and seeding. I start seedlings under lights and they need babying until they are planted out in June. Breakfast is at 8:00 each day and we start at 9:00 and work until lunch. I have a long list of tasks and we pick out a few to work on each day. There are lots of little projects to complete so it is never boring.

    We just upgraded our internet service and it is very reliable, unlimited 50/10 often 60/14. The wifi doesnt quite reach as far as the trailer but there is good cell service here. Lots of room on the decks at the house to set up and do some work and the bonus is the view.
