  We are an animal sanctuary in Murcia, Spain, deep in the inland part of the region. We started in 2019 and today more than two hundred rescued animals live here, across more than twenty hectares of countryside.
  
  What makes us different is who we take in. We specialise in the animals almost nobody wants, neurological cases, animals who have lost their mobility and get around in wheelchairs, and chronically ill animals who need medication for life. There is no adopt and move on here. Whoever arrives stays, and we care for them to the end.
  
  Daily life is real outdoor work. Feeding, cleaning the different areas, water, fence and facility maintenance, small building jobs, and the vegetable garden and the land, which with twenty hectares keeps us busy. This is not a place for cute animal photos. You get up early, you sweat, and some days are hard. In exchange you learn about animal handling, building and self sufficiency in a way you will not learn anywhere else, surrounded by open country, quiet, and animals who follow you everywhere.
  
  You will stay in a cabin on the property, with your own space. We are a small, steady team, so you will have company from day one and someone nearby to show you every task.
  
  We are looking for people who want to help, who respect animals, and who can handle the hard part, because in a sanctuary you also say goodbye. If that sounds like you, write to us and we will tell you everything.
  
  Somos un santuario de animales en Murcia, en pleno interior de la región. Empezamos en 2019 y hoy conviven aquí más de doscientos animales rescatados, repartidos en más de veinte hectáreas de campo.
  
  Lo que nos hace distintos es a quién acogemos. Nos hemos especializado en los animales que casi nadie quiere, los casos neurológicos, los que han perdido la movilidad y se desplazan en carro, y los enfermos crónicos que necesitan medicación de por vida. Aquí no se adopta y se pasa página. Los que llegan se quedan, y los cuidamos hasta el final.
  
  El día a día es trabajo de campo de verdad. Comidas, limpieza de zonas, agua, mantenimiento del vallado y de las instalaciones, obra pequeña, y el huerto y el terreno, que con veinte hectáreas dan para mucho. No es un sitio de fotos con animalitos. Se madruga, se suda y algunos días son duros. A cambio se aprende de manejo animal, de construcción y de autosuficiencia como no se aprende en ningún otro sitio, y se vive rodeado de campo, de silencio y de bichos que te siguen a todas partes.
  
  Te alojarás en una cabaña dentro de la finca, con tu espacio propio. Somos un equipo pequeño y estable, así que vas a estar acompañada desde el primer día y con alguien cerca para enseñarte cada tarea.
  
  Buscamos gente con ganas de trabajar, con respeto por los animales y con estómago para la parte difícil, porque en un santuario también se despide. Si eso te encaja, escríbenos y te contamos todo.

  Here the exchange happens mostly through sharing the day. We work together, we eat at the same table, and the long conversations come up on their own, usually after lunch or in the early evening when the heat eases off.
  
  We can teach you a fair amount. Handling and behaviour of many different species, care for animals with neurological and mobility problems, basic first aid, and how a sanctuary actually works from the inside, which is a strange mix of veterinary care, building, paperwork and communication. We also know the plants of this dry inland part of Murcia, which grow nowhere else, and we are slowly learning to grow part of what we eat.
  
  Local volunteer groups come to the sanctuary regularly, so if your stay overlaps with them you will meet people from the area, not just us. And if you want to practise Spanish, this is a good place for it, we speak it all day and with a southern accent.
  
  What we hope for in return is exactly that, that you tell us how things are done where you live, what you cook, how animals are treated there and what surprises you about this place. People who have passed through here have changed the way we work more than once, and that part matters to us as much as the extra hands.
  
  Aquí el intercambio pasa sobre todo por el día a día compartido. Se trabaja juntas, se come junto a la misma mesa y las conversaciones largas salen solas, casi siempre después de comer o al caer la tarde, que es cuando afloja el calor.
  
  Podemos enseñarte bastante. Manejo y etología de muchas especies distintas, cuidados de animales con problemas neurológicos y de movilidad, primeros auxilios básicos, y cómo se sostiene un santuario por dentro, que es una mezcla rara de veterinaria, obra, papeleo y comunicación. También conocemos la flora de esta zona del interior de Murcia, que es árida y tiene plantas que no vas a ver en otro sitio, y vamos aprendiendo a producir parte de lo que comemos.
  
  Al santuario vienen con frecuencia grupos de voluntariado de la zona, así que si coincides con ellos vas a conocer gente de aquí, no solo a nosotras. Si quieres practicar castellano, este es buen sitio, se habla todo el día y con acento del sur.
  
  Lo que esperamos de vuelta es justamente eso, que nos cuentes cómo se hacen las cosas donde vives, qué se cocina, cómo se trata allí a los animales y qué te choca de aquí. La gente que ha pasado por el santuario nos ha cambiado cosas de la forma de trabajar más de una vez, y esa parte nos interesa tanto como las manos.

  Ajuda

  We need help with the daily running of the sanctuary. The main part is animal care, preparing and handing out the food, filling and cleaning the water troughs, cleaning the areas where the animals live, and helping to handle the ones who need more attention. Many of our animals have reduced mobility, so you will learn how to move them, how to fit their wheelchairs, and how to be around them without overwhelming them.
  
  The other half of the tasks is the land. Fence maintenance and repair, fixing sheds and facilities, small building tasks, loading and unloading materials, and the vegetable garden and the grounds, clearing, watering and planting. We will also keep improving the cabin you stay in, and whatever you do there will be waiting for the next person.
  
  You are never left on your own. For the first few days you work alongside us until you find the rhythm, and after that tasks are shared out according to what you are good at and what you want to learn. If you know about building, mechanics, gardening or you have veterinary training, tell us, because there is plenty of use for it here. And if you know none of that, it is fine too, you learn by doing.
  
  It is around twenty five hours a week, Monday to Friday, with mornings as the main working stretch because the heat here is serious in summer.
  
  Buscamos ayuda con el trabajo diario del santuario. Lo principal son los cuidados de los animales, preparar y repartir las comidas, llenar y limpiar los bebederos, limpiar las zonas donde viven y echar una mano en el manejo de los que necesitan más atención. Aquí hay muchos animales con movilidad reducida, así que aprenderás a moverlos, a colocarles el carro y a estar con ellos sin agobiarlos.
  
  La otra mitad del trabajo es la finca. Mantenimiento y reparación de vallados, arreglos en las casetas e instalaciones, obra pequeña, carga y descarga de material, y el huerto y el terreno, desbroce, riego y plantación. También iremos mejorando poco a poco la cabaña donde te alojas, y lo que hagas quedará para quien venga después.
  
  Todo se hace acompañada. Los primeros días vas con nosotras hasta que cojas el ritmo, y luego se reparten las tareas según lo que se te dé bien y lo que quieras aprender. Si sabes de construcción, de mecánica, de huerto o tienes formación veterinaria, dínoslo, porque hay mucho donde aplicarlo. Y si no sabes de nada de esto, también vale, se aprende trabajando.
  
  Son unas veinticinco horas a la semana, de lunes a viernes, con las mañanas como parte fuerte del día porque en verano aquí aprieta el calor.

  Acomodação

  You will stay in a cabin on the property, with room for four people. It has its own bathroom with a hot shower, a fully equipped kitchen, wifi and a wood burning stove, which you will be glad of in winter because inland Murcia is dry and the temperature drops sharply at night. It is a separate space, so you have somewhere of your own to retreat to when you need it.
  
  Meals work in a mixed way. Some are cooked and eaten together with the team, and the rest you make yourself in the cabin from what we have in. All food at the sanctuary is vegan, without exception, because that is consistent with what we do here. If you have never eaten this way, it is not a problem, you eat very well and you will pick up new recipes.
  
  We will pick you up and drop you off, so you do not need your own car to get here. That said, we are out in the countryside, there is no shop around the corner, and trips into town are arranged in advance when someone is heading down.
  
  Bring work clothes you do not mind ruining, closed sturdy footwear, and something warm if you come in winter.
  
  Te alojarás en una cabaña dentro de la finca, con capacidad para cuatro personas. Tiene baño propio con ducha y agua caliente, cocina equipada, wifi y estufa de leña, que en invierno aquí se agradece porque el interior de Murcia es seco y por la noche cae la temperatura de golpe. Es un espacio independiente, así que tienes tu sitio para retirarte cuando lo necesites.
  
  Las comidas funcionan de forma mixta. Algunas se hacen en común con el equipo, y el resto te las preparas tú en la cabaña con lo que hay en casa. Toda la comida del santuario es vegana, sin excepción, porque es coherente con lo que hacemos aquí. Si nunca has comido así, no es problema, se come muy bien y aprenderás recetas nuevas.
  
  Vamos a recogerte y a llevarte de vuelta, así que no necesitas coche para llegar. Eso sí, estamos en el campo, no hay tienda a la vuelta de la esquina, y los desplazamientos se organizan con antelación cuando alguien baja al pueblo.
  
  Trae ropa de trabajo que puedas destrozar, calzado cerrado y resistente, y algo de abrigo si vienes en invierno.
