We are a nonprofit museum at the southeastern tip of Death Valley National Park. It is a living, breathing museum that educates people on the history of recycled art and architecture and way of life in the American desert.
We have a very multi-faceted project here. There are so many mini projects within the project that there is always something to do. At its core, this is a garden. It's a garden in the desert. It's a bit of a contradiction, but it has been made possible by lots of composting, digging holes for hugulkultur beds, raking leaves from our big trees, lots of water (we have a well) and other alternative techniques. Most of the work we do here is to contribute to the gardens for better health, or for beautification. The contributions from our time spent here, and from the countless volunteers here has made our oasis in the desert possible.
Other projects include construction on small and big scales. There is almost always some kind of construction project in progress here. In the hot months it could be shade structures built with stick frames and pallets. In the cold months, it will be floating rooflines over newly built and newly acquired structures that need to be protected from rain. Smaller projects could be framing in windows, replacing and hanging doors, helping assemble outdoor sculptures. Any sort of construction experience or experience using power tools is the most valuable skill you can bring to us.
It's important to know that this is our home and home for our rescue dogs. We run a small, family-friendly business here, so there is constantly a flux of guests, families and high-end clients staying here on the property, paying for the experience of being here. As such, we require peace, stability, and good presentation from our volunteers because you will interact with our guests on some level. We like to do a casual interview process over the phone to hear from you.
What we expect from you:
We are a sober and drug-free environment. We do not tolerate any drug use here, and yes that includes cigarettes, cannabis, and mushrooms. Smokers, drug users, and recovering addicts, we are sorry that we can not host you, but please do not apply here. We wish you luck with your journeys, but this is not the place for you.
This place is not for people who want to sleep in. We want physically able-bodied folks. If you are not capable of digging a hole in the hot desert, we can not accept you. We like our volunteers to be independent and emotionally strong. We like people that are conversational, but also enjoy their own private time, and respect our private time. This is not an art residency for you - it's an intensive property that requires a lot of input to be maintained. It's not a whimsical vacation spot. We are looking for highly motivated people who want to help us realize our vision and learn how to build a life around their passion in the future.
When you're here, you kind of jump into family life with us. We cook family meals together and eat together. We expect you to help with kitchen prep and dishes after meals. Feeding ourselves and cleaning up are basic necessities, so they do not count as work.
We live in the middle of the Mojave desert in the tiny town of Tecopa. It's an extremely beautiful, untouched landscape, that is right outside our gate. During time off, you will get to hike right outside the property into wild desert wilderness and enjoy spectacular views of desert mountains, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

You'll get to see how artists go about turning a bland environment into a rich and creative space. You'll get to meet great visitors from all around the world who work in creative industries. You'll learn what it's like to live and survive in a spot that is not only extreme, but also truly disconnected from the world.
We just bought an extra 2.5 acres with 6 trailers in different states of disrepair. Since December 2017, we have been working with volunteers and interns beautifying this once abandoned and unkempt property. The trailers are being converted into various buildings and spaces, including an industrial kitchen, , a ceramic studio, a recording studio, fruit orchard, and vegetable gardens. We need your help creating these spaces for you, and the future visitors to come to the desert to enjoy.
Some of our daily tasks include:
- cleaning indoor and outdoor spaces (gardens, the volunteer spaces, common rooms, organizing piles)
- kitchen prep, cooking, and cleaning for big meals
- painting pallets and wood
- digging holes for planting and composting
- carpentry projects with drills and saws
- digging trenches
- watering our gardens
- loving our dogs!!

We have a number of retrofitted trailers situated throughout the gardens on the property including one airstream and two vintage American trailers. Two of the trailers have two beds each. The other trailer is for long term volunteers and has a king sized bed. Each trailer has its own outdoor shower and bathroom. They are very comfortable rooms and you might end up sharing the space with other volunteers during your time.
