… read more were so helpful and generous. They are both such kind-hearted and loving people, I immediately felt comfortable and safe. I mainly spoke in English with Silvia and got to practice my Spanish with Santi. Silvia is a teacher at the local elementary school so I was also able to learn about the Spanish educational system, and I got to help out with the script for their school musical!
The apartment is beautiful and the room is so cozy, and the location is great! There is a metro stop right outside which made getting to and from the city center super easy. Barcelona is a phenomenal city and I never ran out of things to do. I would spend about five hours a day Monday-Friday with the kids, and Silvia was great at helping organize games and activities to do with them—I had so much fun every day! Oihane and Yago are both such incredible kids—Oihane (16) is so outgoing and sweet, and she is nearly fluent at English so I mostly helped her study for her English C1 exam. Yago (11) is so funny and energetic and also has a great understanding of English, so we would spend a few hours a day playing games and reading books. I absolutely loved spending time with them and always looked forward to it!!

Silvia, Santi, Oihane and Yago are the most beautiful family on the inside and out.
I spent the past month (not enough time) living with this gorgeous family, and wish I had more time and didn't have to return home to Australia.

Yago and Oihane are such kind and loving children and are always a pleasure to be around. Both of their presences light up the room. Silvia and Santi are such amazing parents, and it is clearly seen it the way they have raised such beautiful and goodhearted children.
The weekends were free, with the train to the city centre easy to use and very fast, you will be literally living the dream, with the train station right next to the house. The neighbourhood is safe, with I feeling very comfortable living in the area.
I also had the opportunity- as I am studying to be a teacher in Australia- to go to the school (also a less than 5 minute walk) and see how the Spanish education system works, which was an experience in itself, and I am beyond grateful to have had this opportunity, all thanks to the beautiful kind soul- Silvia.
If you want to learn or are learning Spanish, it will improve so much just by being immersed.
I could write for days, how amazing my experience was, however you need to go experience it yourself.
Trust me you will not regret it.
And for Silvia, Santi, Oihane and Yago- I hope to return the favour if you ever decide to visit Australia and I will most definitely return to Spain- with this trip an adventure I will forever cherish in my heart.

My time with Silvia,Santi,Oihane and Yago was amazing. They are the most kind and generous family, and made my time in Spain unforgettable. They are willing to help you with anything, and Silvia even spent time on her birthday calling the authorities to get me some advice when I had some issues related to covid-19!

… read more weeks from April to the end of May. My main tasks were to play games/think of activities to do with Yago, and to practice English grammar and conversation with Oihane. It was very rewarding to see them both progress with English, even though they were good to start with. The kids are well behaved and friendly so very easy to look after. They enjoy most things, but both seemed to love the baking we did every Friday and Yago loved playing pingpong every day.
I loved the food they provided (especially the typical Spanish dishes), and they provided my metro pass as I lived separately from them in the centre of Barcelona. They were very accommodating of me living elsewhere, even when I reduced the days I worked when I started a Spanish course. Due to covid-19 I did therefore wear a mask when I was there, but this wasn't an issue for me.
Overall the experience was totally amazing - I really loved getting to know Silvias family and exploring Spain at the same time. I would completely recommend spending time/doing a workaway with them as you will love it. I stayed with this family from September to December last year and was so lucky to have them as my first Workaway! I was very nervous about living in a different Country for the first time and was not entirely sure what to expect. Yago and Oihane are so funny and easy to get on with! I had some wonderful times painting, drawing and teaching English with them. I will miss playing Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii with Yago and making crafts and Tik Toks with Oihane!
I worked Monday to Friday for about 5 hours a day and then had the freedom to do whatever I wanted in between. It was a great balance of both! The neighbourhood is very chilled out and there's an El Corte Ingles literally round the corner which has almost anything you could ever need! Getting to the centre is a breeze and takes only 30 minutes via metro which is also a 2 minute walk away.
I was very lucky to stay with these guys on such short notice and will forever be grateful for them taking me in! I learned so many valuable lessons and I have so many wonderful memories from my time there that I will keep with me for a long time to come.

With Amy and Mackenzie we had a new and exciting experience! My kids had a great time and they played together for hours and hours. I had really interesting conversations with Amy, too!

As others have mentioned, the room was cozy, the apartment adorable, time and dinners with the family super enjoyable, and distance from the City Centre perfect. MacKenzie loved hanging out with both Oihane and Yago, and she's already asking me when they can come and stay with us in the States (which I truly hope happens!) Needless to say, we were sad to leave, but reassured that we will stay in touch and visit again someday. As a first time "Workawayer",I was unsure what to expect from my experience. When I connected with Silvia on the platform, she was instantly welcoming. … read more the airport and for the next month I was part of their family.
My room perfect and so comfortable. They provided me with everything I ever needed and more and even bought me my favorite food items. Their home was so family orientated as we sat each night around the table eating delicious and authentic meals. Santi and Silvia prepared family meals each night and this experience was one of my highlights. I loved sitting around the table and interacting with them. I observed their culture, likes and ways of living. It was something that can never be replicated, this was so natural and something that I shall be forever grateful for experiencing.
I was with the Kids Monday to Friday and had my weekends free to explore. I had enough time off during the day to partake in different actives in the local area.I had the best of both worlds really; more than enough time to myself while also having plenty of interaction with the family. Their town is super safe and has all the amenities you could want! In total I would say that Silvia is super fair and extremely accommodating. She is very supportive and will guide you in how to give your best to the kids. She will become a great friend to you. Santi is one of the most kind hearted people I have ever met. Even though he does not speak English, he was always looking out for me and making sure I had everything I needed. He made me feel so at home and relaxed.
I had the absolute pleasure of playing and learning with Oihane and Yago. When I say pleasure, I cannot emphasize this enough. The kids are just a delight to be around and made each day a memorable experience for me. When I was with Yago we played so many games. He was always ready to have fun and loved introducing me to his many likes such as Pokemon, basketball and Go Fish :)
Oihane, with her multitude of talents, became one of my closest companions in Barcelona. She is wise beyond her years and forever looking for her next creative project. We did art and crafts, dancing, reading and played a lot of games also. She minded me more than I minded her :)
I feel that I really bonded with the kids and,and as cliche as it sounds, I truly mean that I learned more from them then they did from me. They are not only great kids but also possess the most beautiful souls.
I CANNOT recommend Silvia and her family more to anyone! Whether you are very outgoing, or shy but friendly, you will belong with this family. They are extremely flexible, considerate, caring, generous and kind. If you chose to stay with them, I can guarantee you a safe space where you will grow as a person and build a relationship with their family that will last far beyond your time in Barcelona.

Absolutely loved! As a first workaway experience, this family made the transition so smooth and easy. I quickly slipped into their family and was accepted immediately. … read more experience, there was a fine balance of privacy and inclusion. Silvia (mom) is forward, organized, and animated; Santi (dad) is sweet, hardworking, and patient; Oihane (daughter, 10) is energetic, creative, and kind; Yago (son, 6) is lovable, playful, and strong-willed. Since Silvia is the English and dance teacher at the local primary school, my days ended up being filled with all kinds of unexpected art projects, dances, recording audio of a script for the school's upcoming musical, painting a foam fireplace for a set for the school, and attempting to keep up with Oihane's gymnastics skills in the park. The flat is conveniently located right by a train stop.
Both Santi and Silvia were extremely helpful whenever I was looking for a recommendation for where to find paella, a translation, or an early morning ride to the airport. They even took me on their family vacation to France the first weekend I was there! I was able to make some cash on the side by giving English language privates to people of all different ages in the neighborhood who Silvia connected me with and then spread by word of mouth. (So that's a possibility if you want to look into it.)
Santi primarily speaks Spanish, which was great for me since I arrived with some linguistic fluency. Because of this, some of my most valued times from this experience were conversations either in Spanish or about Spanish and the intricacies of language, communication, and culture. If you don't speak any Spanish, don't fret. Silvia and Oihane are pros, Yago can understand enough as a little one, and you'll figure it out with Santi.

What a beautiful family! Silvia and Santi were so accommodating and wonderful, and Oihani and Yago are truly awesome kids. I had a great time hanging out with all of them and helping with their English, and getting help on my Spanish in return!
