I am a professional photographer (British, resident in Italy 30 + years) living in a renovated farmhouse divided into two separate houses in the beautiful area of the Monferrato region which is part of a UNESCO site, in Piedmont. It is an eco project, powered by photovoltaic panels and wood-fired central-heating. It is on a hill, with a fantastic panoramic view, surrounded by woods and vineyards.

The area is wonderful for walking, running, cycling, horse-riding, photography, creative painting, meditation etc. The towns often have festivals, concerts etc from spring through to late autumn, the area is renowned for its wines and gastronomy- especially truffles! having recently become a UNESCO Heritage Site there is lots to explore around.
Ajuda
I'm looking for help with the garden, about 1/4 hectres, which requires constant attention. There are flowerbeds to weed, vegetable garden to attend to, a wooded area to clear and wood to cut. Also painting, decorating, cleaning and refreshing part of the house, including walls and windows.

Other more longterm tasks include an outhouse to complete, drystone walls to mend.

I could also do with some IT help with making another website, and other online activities, also scanning transparencies to digital and helping with my photo archive.

I am vegetarian. Meals are shared, but if you want to eat meat you can prepare it yourselves, no problem.

There is also a large, hairy dog, Balu, who loves long walks...

The house is less than 2kms from the village, 10 min walk from bus route, 25kms from nearest large towns of Asti and Casale Monferrato, where there are train stations. Nearest airports are Genoa (120 km), Turin (90 km) and Malpensa (Milan) (125 km).

Teresa and Stuart are hardworking and efficient. They like to finish any job they start, and give it their best attention. They worked diligently both inside the house and outside, weeding and clearing, painting and cleaning, among other things (see their list). It was their first workaway experience, which got off to a rather rocky start, as they… read more seemed to have preconceived ideas about how their stay would be, and did not seem to be used to communal or country living. Teresa told me she likes to be in control, and so she found it hard at first adapting to someone else's home and lifestyle.

They stayed in the main guest bedroom and had the use of the main bathroom in the new part of the house, (it was still 'work in progress' in the living areas, although the restoration work is now all finished), they also had the run of my house and could help themselves to anything they wanted, including wood for the stove-fired central heating in their part of the house, which they kept burning during their stay.

Mealtimes were initially an issue as they like to eat early in the evening, around 6 pm, (I am usually still working at that time), so Teresa would generally prepare meals early for herself and Stuart, often making enough for me to eat later. She is a good cook, and she seems to enjoy cooking although she did tell me that one of the reasons for doing workaway was that she wouldn't have to cook all the time!

After the first day of work they arrived at breakfast with a timetable they had drawn up for the days they wanted free, basicly working two days and then having a day off. I was rather surprised, especially as they arrived a day later than planned, and stayed 12 days instead of the two weeks initially requested, but seeing as I didn't have other workawayers staying, I let them organise their days as they wanted. They would usually go out on their bikes in their spare time and days off (they are both passionate bikers), come rain or shine.

They were not happy about the bed (a double-bed made for me when I lived and worked in Paris) which apparently had one or two struts broken, whether by them or previously, I don't know, but it has since been modified and moved, although it has been used quite happily by many workawayers (not to mention myself and my family!).

Stuart is very quiet and reserved, his main interest being motorbikes and tinkering with machines. Teresa is bubbly and chatty, sensitive, a forceful character but easily upset. We actually had many reference points in common, coming from the same town in England. They are a very self-contained as a couple, and definitely like to be autonomous.

Highlight of our time together: a massage from Teresa!

It appears from their feedback that they don't seem to have enjoyed their stay with me that much, which I am surprised and disappointed about, but I hope they find hosts in the future who will fit their requirements, and enable them to enjoy the workaway experience!

Anne was our first workaway experience, and a pretty authentic one! We stayed with Anne and Balu for 2 weeks back in April. Anne is a genuine, good hearted and kind woman. We helped her clear some rather overgrown areas of her borders, and vegetable garden, reclaimed the strawberry bed, gave a large, old and caterpillar infested box hedge a severe… read more trimming so it could be treated, cleared drainage ditches along the steep unmade drive, cut firewood, treated the inside stone walls with a fixative, cleaned up a metal bedframe, cleaned a lot of windows, and painted the kitchen walls.

Highlights of our stay were throwing the ‘frisbee’ for Balu, and him taking us for walks!

We were given a room in the ‘gite’ end of the house, and were able to use the shower room that side. The shower room is very nice. The bedroom is large, with fabulous views of the alps on a fine day. But the bed is home made, initially for a young teenager, and we had to fix it. The 4” foam mattress was a little tough on our old bones. There was a wood burner in the unfinished kitchen area which we were able to use to heat the radiators in the bedroom and bathroom when it got cold.

We soon learnt that Anne doesn’t eat that much, and has quite a basic kitchen in which to prepare meals. She did prepare us some local Piemontese specialities, including chickpea and rosemary galettes, and a sort of stew made from potatoes, ham and leeks. We were glad that we had independent transport and were able to supplement our food intake with meals we cooked ourselves. Anne was happy for us to use the kitchen, which was very kind of her.
Anne was always welcome to join us, but usually ate at a different time.

Asking to use the washing machine became awkward very quickly as I like to separate coloureds from whites and Anne regarded this as a waste of water. This is perfectly valid, so we ended up taking 3 loads to a local launderette. I

Anne is extremely independent and intelligent woman. She spends a lot of time in her own company, but likes to share her opinions freely, when there are others to listen. She is very sensitive, but also very strong minded. We had many interesting conversations.

Anne needs a lot of help to get her gite finished. It is not far off completion. It is a truly stunning place, and will be fabulous when it is finished, but Anne has commitments in the south of France too, and is not always focused.

In conclusion I think that we expected too much from our first workaway host. Anne has many experiences to share, and many stories to tell. We would recommend her as a host. We learnt a lot about the workaway process through our 2 weeks with Anne and would like to thank her for giving us the opportunity to help her in some small way but also for being our guinea pig! We have learnt to ask a lot more questions before we commit to a workaway, so both parties can have the positive experience this exchange should engender.
