Descrição
We have a family operated oyster farm and live on an island homestead in Southeast Alaska. We are a couple in our 50's with a teenager at home. It is isolated here with no shops, and only a few other people. There are lots of opportunities to enjoy pristine Southeast Alaskan views. We travel to town with our boat or skiff about once every two weeks. We have a couple of cats, a dog, and ducks and geese. We try to eat as much home grown or harvested food as we can, though we also get bulk staples.

We live right next to and work on the water, but also have a garden and acreage for those who rather walk.

Share a three room cabin. There is a small kitchen for preparing food, though most meals can be eaten at the main house. The front room is a few feet from the ocean and has a stunning view.

Air travel is to Ketchikan, Alaska (KTN) then on Island Air to Klawock. The travel is expensive - but well worth it, for many people. Please contact us before making any travel arrangements.

We move toward self-sufficiency as a way of life. We grow, eat and sell premium whole foods and avoid processed "foods".

For entertainment while here you can hike, skiff, fish, kayak, harvest plants, berries, mushrooms to eat, and enjoy music, games, or movies.

We have lived in this area of Alaska for many years. This is our way of life; not a vacation/retirement hobby.

They became like a second family during my time on their homestead - they are generous, thoughtful, insightful, inspirational, and exceedingly caring. They opened their home and lifestyle up to me with such welcome and acceptance that I was taken aback. More than I expected, they truly… read more are in the business of making sure you having the greatest and most rewarding time that you can - it never once felt like they were using us for the work, but that they truly love sharing their way of life and allowing people to be able to experience it alongside them. Cindy and Eric have respectively and together lived amazing and fascinating lives, and what they have built from scratch astounded me. They are top-rated, A++ people through and through.

On the more practical side of things: Everyone (Eric, Cindy, April, and Zach) was eager and excited to share their incredible wealth of knowledge on almost everything Alaska and homestead - medicinal plants, fire-starting techniques, aquaculture, construction, gardening - almost anything you can think of, they know something about. The days tended to be pretty structured, with clear expectations, although they can definitely be flexible if you have a project in mind (personal or homestead-related). There was definitely plenty of time off to explore the island and beyond - there are some amazing hikes nearby, especially if you're willing to bushwack. They have kayaks that you can take out whenever you see fit, which should be frequently if you know whats good for you (I definitely should've gone more often). Hundreds of books, both for leisure and learning, are at your fingertips. There are some neighbors that come and go on the island that are always happy to have visitors ad have lived fascinating lives. You can pick berries and mushrooms to your hearts content, take the (crazy and adorable) dogs on adventures, or go camping on a nearby "island" with a beautiful view of open ocean. Before I forget, THE FOOD. Cindy is an incredible cook even if she acts modestly - homemade bread, venison ribs, stews, pesto, king salmon, oysters oysters oysters, I could go on and on. You will be well fed, have no doubt.

It is clear from the description, but their home is remote - which is part of what I really loved about it. It's about 45min by boat to a town of about 135ppl, and another hour plus by car if you need anything beyond gas and some snacks. Come prepared to really be off-the-grid - you won't be going to town often, so you should be happy with the idea of spending all your time on and around the island. Hopefully you are happy with that idea, because that was one of my favorite parts of being with the Wyatts -you're so remote, and it is so clean and simple and beautiful to just sit on the dock and watch the seagulls and eagles and whales go by.

I spent approx 2 months with the Wyatts, and would (and hopefully will) happily do it over again. If this place appeals to you, don't hesitate. I miss it, and them, nearly every day.

Living three months on an island with five more people, that sounds let’s say, special. If you made the flight… read more to Seattle behind and board the plane to Ketchikan, then you realize how remote Alaska is. And when you climb out of the jet intp the tiny seaplane, flying at very low altitude over forests, water, lakes and a little more forest, then one imagines the question of whether it was a wise decision to come here. Who lives voluntarily so far away from everything?
For the time here I can unreservedly say that it is one of my most beautiful experiences I have ever made! Where in the world is one else brought from an airplane to a cove where a boat then get to the plane and pick you up? I know of no other place.
Granted, after some time on the island you miss the flexibility and spontaneity that you have in a city. For this but life has so many positive aspects that they outweigh the negatives by far! Life here is completely different, and incredibly beautiful!
The work on the farm and the nursery for the oysters is very interesting and varied. Even the way there by boat passes through beautiful nature and if you're lucky, you can watch bears and deer. Very often, you can also see a bald eagle over your head. And almost always, you can see sea otters, which are found only in this region again after they were nearly wiped out.
When you come back home, there is still a bit of time until dinner. Do you want to go for a short hike through the impressive forests where you yourself must clear a path itself? Or a fishing trip by boat in the bay right outside the front door? Fang warranty is given! And for very Tired persons: Simply place yourself with a book on the dock and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature!
Anyone who thinks that the food in the evening was simply makes a mistake. Salad and potatoes from the garden where even tomatoes grow and fish and meat that has been caught for 90% in this area. The whole meal cooked by Cindy, an excellent cook, and devotedly spread of daughter April.
After dinner, if you sit with a full belly on the couch, in the background the crackling wood in the stove and the satisfying view through the panorama window to the outside, you know, yes, it was a good decision to come here.

So where do I begin? I feel it’s my responsibility as the first work away to let my fellow workawayers in on the fantastic opportunity that this place provides. I spent three months living with Cindy, Eric and April and the latter half with the Assistant Nursery manager, Zack. I had an amazing time living with the family who provided me with some… read more amazing stories to go back and tell my friends. I’ll fill you in on the family themselves.
Eric is one of the most ambitious, hardworking people I’ve ever met. He has accomplished so much in such a short time. Everything you see on the property has been built by him and he has a wealth of knowledge to share, from fishing to knots to construction and especially oyster farming. During my time there we built a Greenhouse, an outhouse, a portable shop and much, much more and I enjoyed every minute of it. The work itself is ever changing and new tasks will pop up every day as well as the weekly jobs. While the hours can be long at times, the work is very interesting and the family are more than appreciative. Eric will always be happy to help you out with any questions or goals you might have. He’s into learning German and also a very proficient Fiddle and Mandolin player, with Zack’s help you might find yourself involved in spontaneous music nights in the living room of the big house, drinking some of Cindy’s delicious home brewed Ginger Beer.
Cindy is hands down one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and a fantastic cook. Every day ends with a delicious meal from stir fry’s to Sushi nights and if you’re lucky, a freshly caught Halibut pan fried to perfection. They really are the chickens of the sea those fish! She’s also a very keen gardener and loves to take people on walks through the bush and up to the garden, teaching about the variety of native growing herb, plants and berries that can be used as medicines and salves. She also loves to homebrew and will gladly get you involved if you’re willing. Never have any fear of asking her for something if you’re hungry or thirsty or even sore. She’ll be able to set you up with something to fix whatever’s troubling you.
Then of course you have the energetic, spirited 11 year old daughter. Her fun and competitive nature will draw you into board games nights where you’ll have it tough to beat the experienced girl. She loves to read and if you bring her some good books she’ll love you forever, or some movies. Don’t forget movies. They also have a son, Morgan, who’s currently travelling Europe but is set to return in late July.
Your cabin mate, Zack, is one of the most genuine, down to earth, free spirited people you’ll meet. He would literally give you the shirt off of his back. Don’t listen to him if he’s modest about his Guitar playing skills because he is great, especially when he’s having a crack at Percussion guitar. He’s also always willing for an adventure out into the wilderness or just a short fishing trip if the days are arduous or long.
The accommodation is pretty dam good considering its remote location. You will be housed in the cabin that sits right on the water, your room will have three large panel windows that give a view out to the bay in front. If you’re lucky you can see whales breaching, eagles soaring or the sea otters wrestling just from your bed. Internet is very accessible but the download limits aren’t great so don’t expect to be downloading movies and such but its more than capable to skype occasionally and keep in touch with family and friends. Showers can be had up at the big house, warm water heated by the stove is always a pleasant experience.
The work itself ranges from building and repairing or helping out on the Oyster farm which is where you will spend much of your time. There’s also the FLOPSY and the garden to help out in. There’s no baby sitting or anything so don’t worry if you’re not into that.
If you’re going for the fishing or hunting make sure you check the seasons as most of it is highly regulated, don’t let yourself get disappointed. Also, while the travel is expensive, going in by float plane is an amazing experience as you soar over Prince of Whales Island getting a first class view of the world around you. I highly recommend it. What else? Right, they have two dogs, Tiger and Kahli who are a bundle of fun and make great company when out camping, always keeping their eyes open for the frequently spotted bears (Don’t worry, they are safeish).
All in all, I highly recommend this work away. It has been a blast and I’ve learnt a lot, and feel like I’ve left behind a second family who I shall sorely miss. Until we meet up in Germany for a ski trip ofcourse.
