Welcome to our little patch of Central Victoria

We're Amy, Fernando and our daughter Remi, living on just over an acre in beautiful Fryerstown, a tiny historic goldfields village in Central Victoria. We share our home with our dear friend Lucy, who lives independently in a tiny house on the property.

Our place is a productive homestead rather than a commercial farm. We care for a flock of chooks, a vegetable garden, fruit trees and plenty of birdlife. Life here revolves around growing food, cooking from scratch, community and creating a slower, more connected way of living. There's always something happening—planting trees, preserving seasonal produce, building garden beds, caring for the chickens, improving the property or dreaming up the next project.

Amy has a background in sustainability and food systems, manages a local farmers' market, and loves gardening, cooking and preserving. She's also a trained death doula and hosts the local Death Café. Fernando is originally from Colombia and wears many hats: he works in disability support, runs his own accounting and tax business, and is the General Manager of Permaculture Australia. He's curious, thoughtful and dedicated, with a knack for turning his hand to everything from gardening and building projects to solving practical problems. Our daughter Remi is an adventurous toddler who loves collecting eggs, exploring the garden and making friends with everyone she meets.

We enjoy sharing knowledge and learning from the people who stay with us. Whether you're experienced in gardening, building and cooking, or simply enthusiastic and willing to learn, we'd love to welcome you.

One of the best things about living here is being part of the vibrant creative community of Central Victoria. Castlemaine and Daylesford are both nearby, offering fantastic cafés, markets, galleries, live music, bushwalking tracks, swimming holes and historic goldfields landscapes.

If you're interested in seasonal food, regenerative gardening, simple living and Australian country life, you'll likely feel right at home. We enjoy sharing meals, gathering around the fire pit and getting to know people from different cultures and backgrounds.

We're looking forward to sharing this special corner of the world with you.

For us, Workaway is about genuine cultural exchange. We love sharing meals, ideas and everyday life with the people who stay with us, and we hope you'll feel like part of the household during your time here.

You'll often share meals with us and Lucy, who lives in the tiny house on the property. We regularly have friends over for dinner or head to their homes for a meal, so there's plenty of opportunity to meet locals and experience our community. Every Wednesday there's a wonderful farmers' market in the neighbouring town, and Amy and Remi attend playgroup a couple of times a week, giving you the chance to explore the local cafés, shops and surrounds at your own pace.

We're happy to share what we know about vegetable gardening, caring for chickens, seasonal cooking and preserving food. We also love learning from our guests, so if you have skills, recipes, traditions or ideas you'd like to share, we're always keen to learn something new.

Amy is passionate about local food systems, sustainability and community building. She loves getting to know people and sharing stories—having grown up in a big family and attended boarding school, she's very comfortable with the joys (and quirks!) of sharing spaces with others. She'll probably try to guess your star sign too, with varying degrees of success!

Fernando is originally from Colombia and is fluent in Spanish, so if Spanish is your first language you'll feel right at home, and if you're learning, he's always happy to chat and help you practise. He has a wealth of knowledge about Colombian history, politics and culture, and loves thoughtful conversations about the world around us.

Above all, we enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, hearing their stories and sharing perspectives. We hope you'll leave with new friendships, new skills and a memorable experience of life in regional Australia—and that we'll learn just as much from you as you do from us.

With a small but mighty property, there's always something to do, and the work changes with the seasons.

During the cooler months, we focus on pruning fruit trees and vines, fertilising and mulching the orchard, weeding garden beds, collecting kindling, chopping firewood, and planning and propagating seedlings for the warmer months ahead.

When spring and summer arrive, we sow seeds, plant out seedlings, make and turn compost, harvest fruit and vegetables, preserve the abundance from the garden, and spend long evenings sharing meals beneath our old mulberry tree.

Year-round, we care for our flock of chooks, mow the lawns, maintain the gardens and tackle the many small projects that come with caring for a productive homestead.

We work alongside our Workawayers as much as possible, sharing skills, stories and plenty of good food along the way. Whether it's learning how to prune fruit trees, make compost, preserve seasonal produce or simply enjoying a morning collecting eggs and working in the garden together, we hope your stay feels like being part of our home rather than just lending a hand.

No two days are exactly the same, but if you enjoy being outdoors, don't mind getting your hands dirty, and appreciate the rhythm of seasonal living, you'll fit right in.

    Acomodação

You will have your own private room in our home with a comfortable queen bed, warm doona and a small oil heater to keep you cosy during the cooler months. The bathroom is shared with our family.

We provide a relaxed, homely environment where you'll be welcomed as part of the household.

Food is an important part of life here, and we love sharing meals together. Breakfast can be whatever suits you best—you are welcome to prepare your own, or join us for a cooked breakfast. This might be eggs on toast, or porridge and stewed fruit during the cooler months.

Lunch is usually simple and seasonal, such as leftovers from dinner, sandwiches, soup or salads made from what we have available. Dinner is our main shared meal of the day, and we usually cook and eat together. We often enjoy locally sourced food, including meat from friends who are farmers, alongside produce from our garden when available.

We hope your stay feels less like being a guest and more like becoming part of our home—sharing food, stories and the everyday rhythms of life here in Fryerstown.

Castlemaine, our closest town, is a vibrant and creative community connected by train to Melbourne, making it easy to explore the city during your stay if you wish. The local area is full of things to discover, from galleries, cafés, markets and live music in Castlemaine, to the mineral springs, gardens and food scene of nearby Daylesford.

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside too, with beautiful bush walks, historic goldfields towns, swimming spots, country pubs and nature to enjoy.

For your days off, we're happy to help with transport into town and back when we can, or you're very welcome to stay home, relax, read a book under the trees, spend time in the garden or simply enjoy the slower pace of country life.

We live a fairly relaxed, family-oriented lifestyle. We value kindness, communication, curiosity and a willingness to pitch in. We share spaces and meals, so we appreciate people who are respectful, considerate and happy to be part of a household.
