Choosing Hillary as my first Workaway Host was the best choice I could have made! She made me feel welcome from the very first moment, even picking me up from the train station. I look back on all our meals with a smile, firstly because of her cooking skills and secondly because of the interesting conversations we had. If I ever worked longer than five hours a day, she made sure that we would watch a movie the next day or let me finish a little earlier, despite me still offering my help. So you can be sure to be well cared for.
Hillary and I had many great laughs together, all our days were accompanied by the music she introduced me to - besides a clearly experienced host, I definitely found a friend in her.

Tabea is a delightful young lady. I instinctively knew from her application and profile she would be a top Workawayer - and my assessment was correct. Although going back to the food, that alone is worth visiting the manoir for, amazing stuff - morning

The manoir is beautiful and the work is so rewarding, seeing the building progress both inside and out. Visiting local towns and villages for brochantes really lets you experience the beauty and culture of the area and I miss it dearly, definitely a place worth visiting.
Jack, the other workawayer who was there for the time I was, and Nic, a Danish hitchhiker who came to stay with us by chance when Larry picked him up at the side of the road returning from Calais, were awesome guys, fellow travellers and open, kindhearted people. After spending most of my time with Nic I learned a lot of life lessons that week, and left feeling inspired.
Downtime at the manoir is just as fun as work, spending most nights watching films (I feel far more educated movie-wise now!), cycling to a local pub or chilling out by the fire sharing stories with Jamie and Lawrence, who unfortunately left a couple of days after I arrived.
I had a perfect last couple of days, picnicking on the beach at Le Touquet and then catching a train back to Calais to return home (unfortunately).
I'm trying not to repeat other people so this is going to be short, but all in all Larry is a great host, the Manoir is magnificent and well worth visiting, and this is definitely someone any volunteer would love, and I feel genuinely privileged to have been a part of something so awesome!
The only thing left for me to say is Sorry for the late feedback Larry! I couldn't get onto my account and have only just got the password back! I hope you're doing okay, you're probably in Oz now, I hope you're having a great time. We always had lots of different music on in the house, I never thought I would enjoy French Jazz so much! Larry can also school you on a lot of music including House and Reggae and shame you with cult films that you should have seen. I now have a long list of movies I need to watch... On the final day, he helped me load up a teetering mountain of detritus from the restoration work into the van and off we went on a merry trip to the local refuse dump. Next, he reloaded the van again, this time with all the antiques destined for my clients in London, including fragile chandeliers and porcelain. Some items needed attention, so Jason got down to cleaning, sanding, waxing, painting and polishing various antique pieces, ready for sale. He was so good at this, I suggested he try dabbling in the restoration and sale of antiques himself, as a little sideline!
Jason is always appreciative, easy to cater for and is a credit to the Workaway Organisation - any host should not think twice in snapping him up if he's heading your way!

Every damsel needs a tower, so when I saw Kenny's page, offering his building skills, I sent him an invitation to come to my rescue by re-opening a bricked-up window, high up in the attic wall.
He looked like The Black Knight as he rode in on his fabulous Suzuki steed and in the five days he was here, he removed and cleaned all the in-fill
… read more bricks and used them to rebuild the surrounding wall and aperture, so it's totally undetectable as a recent transformation.
A professional builder, with a lifetime's experience and a flair for design, he suggested creating a decorative internal double arch, topped with a crown of three vertical bricks, in place of the length of shabby beam that had been there before. Now the apartment is flooded with daylight from the window and the old wall has been totally strengthened and converted into a beautiful feature. He knows all the tricks of the trade and left me with a feeling of confidence for the remaining brickwork to be done elsewhere, plus some natty artistic twists to incorporate into these projects.
Kenny is also one of the funniest and quick-witted Workawayers I have had here. He had us all laughing helplessly around the dinner table in the evening. .

It is hard to describe my experience with Larry without repeating any other workawayer that has left feedback. Larry is the most accommodating host i could imagine of. I immediately knew I was in for a treat when we began to speak about our incredibly similar tastes in music. The fact that she had met and chatted to one of my favourite Australian bands completely blew my mind. This seems irrelevant but it speaks volumes to the character of Larry and probably explains how my time was so memorable. I wan just continually surprise how alike myself and Larry were, and also by the amount of life lessons and experiences she had.
The food. Wow, just, wow. I could literally just write a whole page of feedback explaining how you should go to this workaway just to experience Larry's cooking. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner was pretty much anything you could hope for, and I'm not saying this as a malnourished traveller, it was truly incredible food. Thai Green curry is a must have if you ever get the chance to stay here.
The work itself was exactly what i had hoped for. It allowed me to challenge myself and my skills. It was very helpful to have Lawrence to guide me for the first few moments. I was really happy with the floorboards and cupboards. At no moment did i ever feel under pressure that what i was doing was not enough or that it wasn't appreciated. Larry truly shows how happy she was with the results. Working in the house is just a pleasure in itself. It has so much history and character.
On the weekend we had the pleasure to go to the beach at Le Touquet and really wind down. The following day we went to a Brocante (I probably spelt that incorrectly) in Estaples, which is basically a huge garage sale with some amazing antiques and things along those lines. Larry really focuses on the fact that your personal enjoyment is paramount so most days are filled with all kinds of activities like playing board games or music. One of my favourite parts of staying with Larry was the fact that we watched a new movie every night, and with the amount of movies she has you could spend a couple of years there just trying to get through them all.
As a fairly weary traveller this was the ideal break from reality to get active and wind down at the same time. It is hard to articulate how much i loved staying here without either repeating myself or anyone else who has stayed. I would recommend this workaway for anyone that is interested, I built a great relationship with Larry and hope to see her when she comes down to visit Australia. Also i hope the Pooze is well.

When I first arrived there was 8 of us, ideal for making friends and hearing about everybody elses experience, what they've done, where they're going as well as picking up travellers tips and advise. Larry and her son are both extremely well traveled people and were always able to give advise other cites the does and don'ts. We frequently bundled into the car down to the pub singing to the beach boys! There was always someone around, whether it was for makeshift hairbraids, scateboarding or just for a chat.
As it turns out Christie and I had a lot in common, I think its safe to say we're life long friends and hope to work together on designs in the not to distant future. In my last week things in the house considerably calmed down, very calming and relaxing. We would frequently sit out in the evening sun with a drink either reading a book from the extensive library or listen to the boys playing guitar. So I had the best of both worlds.
The food that Larry prepared was incredible, I was never an adventurous with food but now after trying so many dishes from around the world (some I hadn't even heard of) I'm now looking for other great tastes. We had traditional French dishes like cheese fondu, escargot and croc monsieur! The food was always fresh, homemade and utterly delightful.
We really saw the area. From Le Touquet's beach front, the creperie, Cuban bar, World war two museum, brocante markets, music festival, cycles, chocolate factory and shops. We had weekends off so with new friends we set of for Brussels which was a brilliant! Defiantly worth the trip, but you have to take a trip to the Delirium Cafe!
While I was there I got on with a selection of jobs including hedge trimming, digging out a pond, helping teach a local french boy english and descovered a new talent for plastering the walls! There was always music playing throughout the house and we usually were educated with some of the best films i've seen. Overall It was a great experience! I can only imagine what progress has been made on the house, I'm sure that it'll look braw by the time its done. Larry, ye hav hud oodles o quines an loons tae look aifter mind tae gee yersel a wee holiday, ye mare tha deserve it! Jaime displays her artistic flair in everything she undertakes. She actively searches for new tasks and challenges, working at them until completion to her own very high standards. It was also- and perhaps obviously- an educational experience for me; from learning how to restore a 16th-century wall to pushing myself to speak more confidently in French with Larry's friends, those three weeks were profitable for me as a person, and have inspired me to keep doing this.
Also thanks to Preston and Helen, who were great people to spend time with. Larry chooses her workawayers well.

I can certainly vouch for Mike's declaration in the final line of his profile, "I guarantee I will not disappoint anyone kind enough to let me stay with them", not only did he hold this promise, but he truly exceeded all expectations.
No matter how awkward physically or mentally, Mike works at the task steadily and swiftly, without cutting

When a large cavity, hidden behind a muddle of broken bricks, mud and rubble was discovered in one of the deep walls, Mike set to it to remove, replace and refill the wall, all accomplished by lying on his side throughout six working days. The wall is now perfect and beautiful, with all the cleaned, reclaimed bricks set in the correct pattern, showing his natural skill with brickwork and mortar.
His next commission was to strip and revarnish one of the huge old oak front doors and strip and repaint its large iron strappings and fixtures. It is now restored to its original gleaming gold, with smart, matt black ironwork - every visiting pal I've had since has remarked on the transformation!
Mike is a calm, confident young intellectual, with a generous, gregarious spirit. He brims with ideas and inspired the gathered team to spend one Saturday exploring La Coupole near St Omer and the following Saturday we found ourselves enjoying a tour of Brugges! His French is excellent and he was able to mix and mingle with my local friends and neighbours effortlessly.
This is a fellow who is going places……and he's welcome back at this place whenever he wishes! Thank you for all your efforts Mike: "Mike's Wall" is a wonderful, permanent mark for the centuries to come.

Oh deary me, where to begin? My exploits in France brought me to the Manor house for two weeks, and the lovely, hospital acommodations of Larry. The work was in general interesting and engaging, and Larry made sure to switch it up some so things kept interesting. I stripped paint, removed 200 year old plaster, and the patched up an old mud wall which had gotten a bit dreary around the edges. Larry also honored me with the privelage of felling a dead Willow tree in her backyard, which took the good part of two days.
After a good days work, Larry always made sure to cook us up something great. In fact, I have never ate better in a two consecutive week period in my life. Now I won't start bragging for Larry about all of the international cuisine she is able to whip up, but it is quite impressive and expanded the vocabulary of my stomach.
Our evenings and weekends were also amazing, and I am truly thankful for all the effort Larry put into making sure our free time was well spent. We visited several villages on and close to the coast our first weekend and spent some time at a WW2 museum as well. On our second weekend we made it all the way out to Brugge and spent a delightful day sipping on trippel ale, climbing up ancient towers, and enjoying the fine Belgium summer weather.
All in all a beautiful experience, there just ain't a better workaway host out there! :-)

Preston's enigmatic photograph caught me eye, so I read his profile and immediately decided to invite him to join our Crew. He is a delightful, laid-back, cultured Texan gentleman, who is multi-talented and thorough with manual tasks.
