  • Description

Hello, I am Michael. I am from Dublin, Ireland.

I am studying law remotely at the moment, which means I am free to move around. I have exams in March so I am hoping to go on a Workaway in April/May.

Before deciding to study law I was a secondary English literature teacher in the UK and Ireland for 3 years. I also taught English language in Italy for a year, So if you want some help with your English, I can definitely be useful for you.

I have a Bachelor's in English Literature from Trinity College Dublin and a Masters in Education from University of Cambridge. But I have more than just academic experience!

I spent the summer of 2025 working as a groundskeeper and gardener for the Pontifical Irish College in Rome, Italy. My normal duties were sweeping up leaves, mowing the lawn, watering plants, taking out the rubbish, and just generally helping the main groundskeeper with whatever needed to be done that day. I liked the work, and found it was a nice counter-balance to the law-study.

Hospitality is also a strong point for me. I help out at my local church by serving tea, coffee and biscuits on Sunday mornings. I really enjoy meeting people, talking to them over a cup of coffee, and making them feel welcome. I especially enjoy meeting elderly people, because I find that they often have a lot to say, and appreciate someone who listens to them.

In Rome over the summer I served dinner and cleaned up after dinner for the visitors at the college. I also met incoming guests, welcomed them warmly, and showed them to their room.

I also volunteer on the Young Adults Catholic committee in Rathmines Parish, Dublin, wherein we organise events and talks bi-weekly for people interested in faith.

As I am studying, I would need to have a few hours in the day when I could study, and ideally a quiet room with a desk and internet connection. While working as a groundskeeper in Rome, I worked 4 hours in the morning, and studied for 4 hours in the afternoon and I found that worked really well for both me and the people I was working for.

    Thank you for reading,
    Michael

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I am a good communicator, and I am not afraid to be criticised; I know I'm not perfect, so if I am doing something the wrong way I don't mind being told so.

I am a good learner, I work hard at remembering what the right way to do things are when I am in a new situation. I try to pay attention to what people are telling me so I don't need to ask them twice.

I have some experience building, and using tools. I once worked in a furniture store where I had to put up shelves, and dissassemble furniture.

I've worked on building sites before in Zambia, where I helped to build a house with Habitat for Humanity. I found the work rewarding. It was manual work, mixing concrete, laying bricks and fitting windows.

Some of my family are farmers, so I know what it is like to chase sheep into a trailer, or herd them with a dog. I have worked in the bogs with my uncle, stacking turf.

I am able to pick up new skills quickly, and I am fairly easy-going and relaxed.

I keep calm under stress, and not let the pressure deter me from the task at hand.
