Quelles sont vos compétences ?
We're new to Workaway but bring many skills/experiences and, most importantly, hearts of service and an eagerness to learn, understand, and become a better part of the bigger whole. We're both wildly curious, imaginative and creative, and we love books, with Ethan having a special love for and desire to learn more about history and culture. I'm more of a guantum physics/neuroscience, body-mind connection kind of girl myself.
We left our family and friends back in Ohio last October to satisfy our wandering spirits. After spending months on the road and then a few months with my son in Phoenix, we decided we wanted to dig deeper into a way of life that supports our desire to take part in nature in a deeper way.
I'm Dana, aka the mothership, and I'm honestly the type of human that just wants to know and try everything, well, mostly. Not sure I have the stomach for skydiving or such daredevil-ish things, but I may if you make it appealing enough :))
I’m a single mom (I have two other boys - 25 and 23) and worked at home as a medical transcriptionist for almost 20 years, so we could have the flexibility to homeschool and enjoy the freedoms that it offered. I also had a thriving portrait and wedding photography business that kept me on my toes.
At the same time, I also did web design/basic development as a virtual assistant and for a successful non-profit that my mom ran for 20 years. She was a missionary and had many contacts around the world who I worked one-on-one with to create websites that curated their daily lives (and needs) for the outside world to see. They were a blessing to me, and I to them. Our time of learning each other and helping to meet financial needs through various ways was a gift, and I still count all of them my closest friends and mentors.
I’ve also done factory work and am nearing the end of a 2-year stint as a delivery driver with FedEx, having worked both in rural Ohio and chaotic Phoenix.
My son is Ethan. He's 16 (yes, really) and has been homeschooled since the middle part of his kindergarten year. There was just too much genius in him even at a young age to let the restrictions of a public school environment dampen his spirit. He’ll technically be a “senior” this fall, but we’ve never used formal grade structures to define his learning.
He studied Japanese for almost 5 years and that prompted his own journey into life outside of his own circle. He’s taken formal classes in construction and web design. He’s also studied ethical hacking and scarily knows how to do things he probably shouldn’t. He’s a big tech kid, meaning he enjoys his phone but he also knows how to make techie things work and create new techie things from things he finds around the house or grandpa’s garage. For instance, he made his own electric toothbrush using a 9-volt battery, some electrical components and the rumble gadget from a PlayStation controller. He likes to tear things apart, then put them together in new (or old) ways.
His computer used to be his lifeline and he still loves to game with his brothers occasionally, but he’s far more interested in being outside on a long walk, hiking, mastering a new skill or learning a new language. His journal never leaves his backpack, which he takes everywhere. He’s teaching himself cursive now and that’s been a fun thing to watch.
He worked at a horse farm as a stall hand for 4 years and took lessons as well. The horses, especially our favorite guy, Coach, was his best friend, and they spent many hours talking to each other and doing what friends do - goofing off and getting into trouble. Animals are comfortable around him and he adores them just as much.
He’s familiar with working on cars, very much knows how to use tools and measure and cut wood, etc. He replaced a radiator fan/belt on our van by himself, he knows how to change oil and even helped me replace some solenoids on a transmission before doing a fluid exchange. He learns very quickly and takes instruction - probably better than I do :))
Oh, and don’t let me forget, he also knows how to cook, clean and do laundry. He learned at a very young age and has been my lifeline in those regards. With the long hours of work I usually had to keep, he would make sure dinner was ready and then would clean up and take care of the house. He’s become increasingly curious and creative in the kitchen. His favorite thing to make as a treat are French beignets from scratch.
We are best friends and make a great team. We’ve learned through time how to better communicate with each other. We’re not afraid of hard, sweaty work, or long hours of said work. With that said, we do tend to get bored pretty easily, so the more we do, the more our brains are asked to work and create, the better we are. Sure, we need our downtime to relax and whittle wood, chew on hay, sketch/paint landscapes, and write stories, but we are wanderers and wonderers at heart. We truly want to see and experience all the magic that life has granted us.
So we’re here for you, and for us. Living a normal life is not in our DNA and we’re finally okay with that. We jump metaphorical mountains, break societal molds and trust life for guidance and wisdom to carry us into the next day.
We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible!Âge
